- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2014 BMW X5 and the 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 are both tall crossovers that don't compete against each other but they are similar in one very important way: they both use 2X the usual amount of forced induction. In plain English that means that the 2014 BMW X5 is twim turbocharged while the Volvo is Super Turbocharged. So which is faster in a straight line. In a fun TFLcar drag race we decided to pit the two tall crossovers against each other to see if the super-turbo or the turbo-turbo is faster.

I own the T8 and its is extremly fast. Recomend that over the X5. The T8 isnt much faster than the T6 though.

+hung huge They didn't even get the XC60 in full Sports mode. LOL. He put the transmission in Sports mode, but he didn't go into full sports mode in the "My XC60 Menu", which dumbs down ESC, ramps up torque vectoring, and reprograms the Fuel Control. Sad.
I know this was all in fun, but when doing car comparisons I think it more beneficial to compare two cars that would be crossshopped. So, for the XC90 T6 a better choice would've been the X5 with the 6 cylinder. For the V8 X5, maybe the ML550 or FX50 (or whatever it's called now).

Why are you racing a 4 cylinder vs an 8 cylinder. The bmw has 145 more horsepower and is designed to be fast. You should have raced a 35i or 35d against the volvo. The fairest to race would have been the 40i hybrid because that also has a turbo 4.
Should maybe race a different car entirely, such as: a Chevy Vega, Dodge Colt, Ford Pinto, etc.
Now, just for fun, test that same BMW against a V60 or S60 3.0L Polestar. You will probably have a pretty even match.

I thought the X5 & XC60 competes with each other. However, you're right. For the Volvo XC60, the direct competitor would be the BMW X3. The X5's direct competitor would be the XC90 for the Volvo.

I had the same concern, comparing cars from two different categories but after your simple direct explanation, you guys made sense all the way and I would love to take my 1.6L diesel powered station wagon Hyundai i30 and try to beat some BMW cars from start, lol, but here in Sweden roads are not wide and people are so damn polite when they drive and if they see you doing this, they will ignore you, they care for environment and noise and bla bla bla, sweet people though....

Why is everything a 'crossover'? What does it take for Roman and Nathan to call cars like these SUV's? Crossovers are Toyota RAV4's, Suzuki SX4's, Ford Kuga's, Nissan Dualis, Subaru XV, Mazda CX-5, Audi SQ5... etc. I would call both the Volvo and the BMW in this video SUV's.

I have a BMW X5 40D it’s a 30D with an extra turbo. Stock. In a short drag race most cars give up as it launches like a cut cat. I then put a K&N air filter and a chip tune box. Economy Is 7.4 klm per 100 klm around town. Long runs 5.8 klms per 100 kilometres driven. It’s a no brainer buy one.

A twin turbo V8 vs a 3.0 litre 6 cylinder. Come on guys, get an X5 3.0 turbo and do a test with some validity. The BMW will still be $20K more but at least they will be closely matched in powertrains for a comparison. With the engine choice there was no need for a drag race. The Volvo is AWD as ALL 6 cylinder T6 models are AWD (new Drive-e T6 is FWD).

That BMW should do better on a hot-lap. It is heavier and wider tires and a bigger engine. Dad uses one for work, on the turny highways he dosnt touch the breaks very often.
I work at BMW and my mom owns an x5, they are absolutely awesome and very quick. I have more fun in them than my 328i convertible lol

The BMW actually uses it's XDrive system to send send power between the wheels so when you guys took off, the bmw automatically sent full power to the rear wheels and took off while, the Volvo took off with trying to pull it self forward so your your basically actually comparing a RWD car with over 100 hp, and a V8, with a RWD car with 100 less hp. and 4 cylinders less. The volvo is obviously going to lose, but have you ever considered putting ether car in sport mode

I love Volvos. But here you're not only comparing a four cylinder to an eight but there is also a difference in configuration. Yes there is a supercharger in the Volvo but the BMW has a V-8 where the Volvo's four is a straight block. The V-block as Nathan said gives the BMW great torque at low RPM inherent in a way that a supercharger can't.
This test doesn't say anything worthy. If I would look up the performance specs of these two cars I will probably see the same result as in the clip. I would rather see a rolling start from 30 mph or something

Fast forward to today and we have the Volvo XC60 Hybrid that would probably take out both the current X5 35i AND 50i. (50i might close in and overtake but it will have to work).
