I would say save not ONLY for collab units but for: " Sacred blaze" " Memory" "Villains" banners Because those units don't come to standard pull. If your NEW to the game considered rerolling as methods of Saving you rubies in long run. That's what i did when I started the game.
nier is the must for me. even if I have to buy gems I'm getting both!!!! Limited characters I agree are the best to save for, it just makes sense considering LIMITED :D
Except whales, no one it getting every character of the game. My plan is to pull for things I need in my roster, even if it means sometimes skipping great characters. For example, Z'aanta is an absolute BEAST of Bow Damage but I already have 5* Scarecrow and H'aanit. I can't justify dropping those rubies when I'm much more lacking other weapons/elements.
So far I’ve been hoarding rubies since I started. I only tossed rubies to the occasional step 1 of the step ups and I believe I’ve only pulled on the Lynette step up some time ago. My plan is solely pulling on favorites, the current ones being Cyrus, Ophelia, A2, Herminia, Auguste and Tytos. Aside from that I’ll try pulling for some really meta units if possible. All I’m hoping for is that these units won’t drop consecutively.
From the very start my plan was to just pull first step in step-ups and now that it's set at 200 ruby I can even skip that unless I need that charecter/class. My only regret so far has been the Odette banner (spent about 3000 ruby without success), since I really wanted her but did not have enough for guaranteed. I only wanted Agnes from BD ,and luckily managed to get her to A4 too after 2700 ruby, no regret at all. Didn't even bother for other ones. I have about 2k saved now and will be just saving ,hopefully to 6k+ till the next collab. :)
I got super lucky when starting my account finding Viola and Lynette in the same reroll plus doing amazingly well on the BD collab banner, not counting some other good units that I found with little effort. Thanks to this, I started saving solely for the Nier Automata collab whenever it comes because my actual team can carry me for many months. Currently at 2K rubies, I want to be (Nier) 6K in about 4 months from now to be ready for the Nier banner, if they launch it during the first part of 2023.
About ruby income, it is way higher than we thought. I've saved 8k rubies and spent almost 5k. I haven't beaten a single lv.100 NPC yet so there are 800 rubies there. Also I'm missing many feats, 200+ rubies there. We are getting a new big update in less than 10 days and there will come many one time rubies there also. So yeah.. since we are fast paced we are getting a lot more rubies than JP at their start.
I focus my pulls on what my account lacks. My Fire, Axe, and Dark are my weakest coverage. I am definitely waiting for Cyrus and then will focus on whatever Dark character might help me fill out my rosters weaknesses
I've been lucky and pulled some of the early 5* units on the first pull and have been able to keep a stockpile up to this point. Almost have 4k and will be very cautious going forward. Cyrus is Cyrus, so that's gonna happen. After that, I'm going to wait and research these units before throwing rubies at them. I have a lot of coverage so I have the luxury to wait. Honestly, I want Sofia and Theo. Both are useful and I haven't seen them yet. But, as they are in the general pool, its a waiting game.
I've played enough games in my 36 years to understand it's the accomplishments along the journey that keep me engaged with a game. Buying my way to the end early robs me of that, and makes the end feel immediately stale. I won't be making that mistake here.

Gen pool units can show up on limited and collab banners but not the other way around. Plus, since we have the foresight of JP we know that a majority of the top tier units are limited or collab. I personally do step 1 maybe step 2 if it is a unit that has staying power. Zaanta is an example, still the best single target bow DPS unit in JP and top 3 overall bow units depending on how to rate them. I did step 1 and step 2 but would not go further than that. I almost didn't do step 2, bring back the 150 200 discount SE! The rest of my rubies are held for limited units. I will even forego Cyrus when he drops since he is gen pool. There is a lot of hype for him, but the only hole I have right now is Fire so I don't need 2/3rds of his kit. Would he make those parts of my roster better? absolutely, but I have something there already so I will pass. Short term my account may lose out, but long term I think it will do much better. This is my approach and I am not an F2P. I actually stopped doing the daily pulls because the guaranteed 5 star is only from gen pool so the value is not as good as I originally thought. Use him if you get him off banner. He is slightly less trash then his JP version. So unless they do more for future unit buffs it won't change much as far as my targets go. Zenga, Bargello, Rinyuu, Tatloch, Fiore EX are the units I am targeting. I might try for A2, but since all of the nier are on 1 banner I probably will skip unless I have the 6k needed to spark A2. So I am currently at 1.4k after the Collab but I still have a lot of traveler stories to farm some rubies and my current plan is I will just do the 1st step on units I "need" like zannta this week bc I need a 5* hunter and one (hopefully) lucky single on other units just in case I get them, it happened once with Cardona, I got her from a single (30 rubies) so it can happen again. I will save for Nier Collab or Octo II Collab, depending on how they handle that. I will do 2 steps (ok maybe 3) on Cyrus bc he is so good but he will be added to the pool at some point so I think a better investment is to pull on the 2nd limited banner, maybe... Either way I'm just chilling
If Partitio came out and I didn't have enough rubies to get him I would be very, very disappointed. I might just save until I have enough to guarantee him one way or the other.
So my luck has been pretty poor as a F2P and I had to spend EVERYTHING to get all 3 Bravely units. I spent on maybe 3 or 4 of the Step-Up banners, and at that I did only up to the second round once. So I had a lot of rubies for the BD units. What I've learned, I'm simply saving and spending on ONLY limited units and collabs. Let the gods sort out who I get from there.
Goal for me is to just wish on step 1 every time, and then save the rest for The original Octopath 1 cast whenever they get a banner. Not going to be too upset if I don't end up getting them though.
F2P here. I pull as soon as I have enough rubies to do so, either from step-up or the 4 or 5 * pool. My goal is to collect one or two 5-star characters per month. I am assuming that the game's ultimate endgame will require 100 level characters, which means getting as many 5-stars as possible. I am also leveling up my 4* characters. I've already finished all the content except for the tournaments. I don't care about Cyrus. I played over 1,000 hours of Cyrus in the original Octopath Traveler & at this point I'm sort of sick of him lol.

indeed, awakening is definetly a problem. They need to implement a free way of awakening with some sort of mats we can grind daily or some shit.
