There’s different types of collectors out there. I’m in the category I just care about owning the movies. I don’t care about fancy packaging if the price is so much higher than a standard release.
I like cool packaging but it’s not the reason I got into collecting movies.
For me I got into the hobby only to collect 80s movies because it’s the stuff I grew up watching and it’s what I like. so I just wanted to have the movies in a good format like Blu ray. I would be perfectly happy if all the movies had standard cases. I try not to care too much, I allow the movies to get shelf wear, I try to think like a regular person would. I find that I enjoy the collection more when you’re care free, have a casual collector mindset.

That's right, there are different types of collectors. I also belong more to the category of films that shaped my childhood and youth, 80s, 90s films that I have the most in my collection and it doesn't necessarily have to be a 4K and I'm out of the special editions anyway :)

It a real shame that so many movie collectors only talk about collecting, slip covers, packaging etc, rather than discussing movies. So many Blu Ray channels on UA-cam are now downsizing their collections like it’s some kind of trend. Back in the day of early internet, people actually discussed movies of all types on forums, sadly those days are gone. Let’s get back to having conversations about movies of all types, classic, silent, cult, exploitation, horror, comedy, westerns, drama, fantasy, sci-fi, martial arts, art house etc. I have got rid of about 400+ movies over the past year, I now mainly collect older movies (cult, exploitation, foreign language, horror, western etc), as modern mainstream Hollywood have become a tad boring with endless sequels, belated nostalgia sequels, remakes and superhero movies. So many Blu Ray collecting channels just focus on the ‘latest big budget release’ which I have very little interest in, they go on Blu Ray hunts like they are looking for rare and interesting movies but all they do is buy the latest Hollywood mainstream movies.

I have a nice collection. I don't buy titles just because I feel the need, too. You get people who buy endlessly and then turn around and start ditching DVDs and Blu-Ray's because they don't have space or they don't know ?why? they bought titles that they don't want to begin with. I don't have sympathy with these people. You buy a film or TV series to enjoy it, not to watch it once and then sell it off. These days, it's about keeping up with others and trying to buy the latest film. I've always taken the view that watching the film on TV or steaming is the best way to judge whether you want the film on physical or not. There's too many dumb arses in the community who just buy because others have the latest boutique title.

@PhillwithadoubleL that's right phill. People are just too suckered in with buying stuff without thinking twice. Everything I watch is what I want. There's nothing that I don't want. I just think it's gone beyond a joke! Some people have plenty of disposable income to spend, but they really need the vast majority of it. I have two friends who buy stuff and still haven't watched it. One friend bought indicators Christine Ltd, and it's still wrapped up since 2016. He has stuff that he said he'll never watch, then he flogs it off on eBay. I see people on UA-cam who buy a box set and only watch one film in the entire box set. Mad. You can't take this stuff with you after you leave this mortal coil. It likely ends up in the dump or sold off to other people.

Whilst I won't disagree with the facts and your point, I will say that if *to me* collecting, as a hobby, is now as enjoyable as the movies themselves, as long as I recognise that (and don't let it reach a stage where it's negatively affecting my finances) isn't that just as justified as _potentially_ enjoying the films a little more but losing the enjoyment of the collecting itself.
*To me* overall enjoyment = enjoyment from collecting + enjoyment from films, so my enjoyment of films alone would have to be significantly increased if I stopped collecting to even up the sum so I had higher, or even the same, overall enjoyment.
As a lot of people seem to be saying, it's up to the individual and there's no right or wrong (unless it's actually having a negative financial, mental or social impact)

I am a minimalist who understands the need for physical media. It's an ongoing battle in my head every day. Over the years I have sold my collection twice and bought 90% of it back again. Recently I discovered blu-ray sleeves and they are perfect for me. I have around 90-140 blu-rays but they take up little to no room. I think I have finally found the perfect balance for me. I get that some collect because they look at their collection as artwork but I only buy the films I love and will watch numerous times. Sleeving them is the best thing for me. If I didn't put them in sleeves I would feel like I am hoarding even though I wouldn't be. If you are in this to enjoy movies and TV shows you love, consider sleeving some titles, it won't kill you. I know you have from previous videos but I think many others should think about doing the same. I am not saying sleeve every item but get rid of the plastic case for items you don't care about displaying.

I've upgraded some films from VHS, DVD, Blu-ray, to 4K etc. But I've never bought the same 4K twice just for the packaging. Some months are pricey, others not so much. It really depends on what's coming out. Of course ownership does play a part and limited editions are nice, otherwise why collect them. But I never buy films for the sake of quantity, or a limited edition. It's about having a collection that means something. That's the bottom line. It's a shame lots of people fall into this trap of buying every Second Sight limited edition for example. I would get zero satisfaction out of that.
