  • Is Rodin's monumental masterpiece a failure?
This video explains why there are two different versions of the same artwork, and why Rodin remained obsessed by the Gates until his death.
It shows how the artist managed to solve major aesthetic issues that faced modern artists at that time.

He contemplated a composition of many major themes from the past, reworked them to become his own and then reinvented a completely new concept, which was in itself completed and refined through the ever evolving grace of his misfortune. After all those years, he certainly had walked through the gates of hell to create such a masterpiece. A true genius! This was absolutely the finest video. Well done!

What a treat this is. A project worthy of the great work of art it richly documents.... an appropriate summation of romantic ambitions.... the agony, ecstasy, striving, evolving spirit of the times.... each generation coping with the mysteries of passions felt, yearnings seeking fulfillment...
    I love this work...

I must say, this was probably one of the most informational things I've seen in a long time. While the Doors themselves are rather gruesome, one cannot contest that Rodin was indeed a great artist.

Rodin was given to extreme theatrical gestures. It seems to me that his "second version" of the Gates of Hell may have been a reactionary statement to challenge the loss of the contract on the magnificent first version. Virtually all the figures missing from the door were displayed in monumental scale as freestanding masterpieces in the same exhibit.
Rodin was saying, "You tried to defame me by rejecting this composition, I have exceeded that rejection by the power of my creations."

what a genius Rodin; the documentary is greatly richer with the paragraphs of the nice voice giving the explanations, in addition to the beautiful music.

Ok. A game called Bayonetta has a character called Rodin who is a fallen angel working in a weapons store/bar called ‘The Gates Of Hell’ and the exit door is that exact statue.

I think every aspect of the work symbolizes something spiritually. The more you understand the Bible and spirituality, the more things like the missing hands of the muses at the top or the man wrapped up in his thoughts on the next level seem to have more significant meaning than just here is the author with his work or their hands were chopped off in an accident. The best thing about Rodin is the spiritual energy it exudes. Art is all about the personal interpretation, but to me, Rodin is very deep and very in tune with Biblical understanding.

Sculpture cannot fail if it carries a social message of it s time. Through the counterpoint of a painting, a social critic or poet; or even the very material of the sculpture, singly or in multitude. If the sculptor misses any of this, there cannot be the paradigm shift, only the meditation upon this; an inevitable status of any work~in~progress
