This is textbook dementia. I've worked in memory care for 15 years. Literally, instructed and trained people that ice cream is a great way to calm a person with dementia. It's sweet, cold, and had to be eaten slowly. A person with dementia has changes in their sense of taste where are sweets are what they like to eat. The way he's pausing, how he's responding. I've seen this for 15 years.
EDIT to add: I don't necessarily agree with sugar or sweets and I feel our medical system is severely broken and keeps/makes people sick, so no, I'm not ignorant about that. Just saying that it is a known technique to relax people with dementia to eat cold, sweet things. And no, eating sweets is not why I think he has dementia. It's 15 years of direct care experience and 7 years of that working as an activities director in a day center for people with Alzheimer's and other dementia. I love this population of people. It is actual elder abuse what is happening to Biden, and heartbreaking. Even though I don't agree with his politics, what he is being put through is just wrong. I have cared for people at all stages of dementia (and his is beyond mild and probably moderate), and this man my heart actually goes out to him and I pray for him because I feel so sad and angry in my chest and I feel pain in my heart and gut.
If he was someone that came to our facility, long ago we would have had care team meetings and the nurse meeting with the wife to tell her what she was doing and what was happening was not in his best interest, and discuss with her how to make changes best for him and get her resources to support her and to help them move forward.
