I love this game, it is my favorite shooter on steam. The one issue I have a lot is with Squad Leaders and Commanders. So I'm going to use this tutorial as a platform to post the keys to being a good SL.
How to be a good Squad Leader: Overview: As the SL it is your duty to keep your squad together and in the fight. If your squad stays together, and stays in the fight for the entire game, you are contributing directly to the fun and entertainment of all 9 members of your squad. New players need not feel overwhelmed, as this is not as difficult as it may sound. You don't even have to get a single kill the entire game to be a good SL. Priorities: 1. Keep a rally up at ALL times. An SL who does this is already at the top 25% of Squad Leaders. a. Do this by utilizing your radio man. A good strategy is to place a backup rally at the beginning of the game, that will not get destroyed. After 2 minutes place one closer to the objective once you have a good perception of where the enemy is, and where the enemy thinks you are. b. Rally mechanics are a 6 minute timer when place outside of the red zone, and 4 minute timer inside the red zone. You can't put a rally on obj. If you can't use a radioman the mechanics are the same but with 2 additional squad members at a 2 minute penalty. So 4 minutes outside red, and 2 minutes inside without radioman. c. The Mobile Spawn is NOT a rally replacement, nor is an FOB. Too many times has the enemy located an MSP or FOB, called for fire support, and the point be immediately lost because no SL had a rally up. d. Every 2 minutes, you can refresh your rally. Ask squad members to help remind you to refresh every 2 minutes that goes by on the rally. This will increase your time in the fight. At 90 seconds remaining, it is time to put up an entirely new rally. If you have been fighting people off your rally, its time to change locations. If not, just put a new one in the same location. 2. Communicate with other squad leaders, and play the objective. a. Everyone knows it sucks to play the defensive squad. It is a necessary part of the game; however, there is one upside. If your team has any sense, you will leapfrog straight to the next attack point once the forward point is captured. So it may be beneficial to keep a transport near the defense point. -As a caveat for offensive game modes, it should be noted that no squads should play any other point than the point in play. Falling back early provides no tactical advantage, as it increases your ticket bleed on defense, and it takes 5 minutes for the point to enter play anyways. Attacking early also provides no advantage for the same reasons. 3. Call for Fire Support from the commander. a. You want to advance on the objective but are taking heavy MG fire from a known location. Pull out the binos, and mark something, then go to your map and place a Point of interest. Call to the commander for fire support on that POI. Very simple, very effective, and it separates the 25% of good SL's further into the 10% of excellent SL's. b. Don't let the commander call artillery willy fucking nilly on an objective just because. Be prepared to follow up the arty with a solid push by your squad. 4. Command your squad. a. Radioman won't listen to you, kick him. Marksman 400m away from the squad pretending to do shit, kick him. But, if you haven't provided them instructions, you can't blame them for not listening to you. As a rule of thumb, if you want to refresh a previous rally, move to the radioman. If you want to put a new one down, place a mark on the map and have him move. Being under fire is not an excuse for fucking over the entire squad. This is why its important to start a new rally 90 seconds out. It gives time for you and the radioman to die under fire, give up, and spawn on the current rally. For the marksman, tell him how far away he is allowed to move from the squad. Usually 150m provides a enough space for him to maneuver on the enemy. b. Unless fighting building to building or trenches, you should opt for the heavy MG. Emplace your MG in a position that provides a good field of fire. This separates the excellent SL's, from the incredible SL's. This doesn't need to happen every attack, but it should if you're having trouble, or are sneaking up on the enemy. 5. Be a team player. a. We get it, your squad single handedly captured this attack point, and now that you moved on and the other 3 squads are defending, they lost the point. But fuck me if you don't fall back when your team loses the point. You can do everything else right, but having some self-righteous chip on your squad's shoulder makes you the worst, most toxic SL in the game. Fall the fuck back, and play the god damn objective. So what if you're the best squad while the team gets steamrolled. If you know your squad is good, then help your team. That is what makes a good SL and contributes to the fun of the game. If I was commander, I would nuke your fucking position for not falling back. If you're playing commander, you absolutely should nuke a squad that is not playing obj. Other tactics and useful tips: -Don't get your panties in a bunch. You told your squad to spread out but joe schmoe sticks right next to you. Whatever, at least he's fighting with the squad. Its a fucking video game. Your squad is playing like shit, you can't capture or hold anything, etc. If you have them together and fighting for the objective then you can't ask for much more from people on the internet. -When assaulting a position, set up a support by fire. Have 1 medic, your MG, and your marksman set up to provide suppressive fire. The medic should be on binos making MG corrections and calling out targets. You can bring the other 6 members of your squad up to the last position of solid cover, pop smoke all at the same time for max efficiency, and move up on the position you're assaulting. Then, you can further call out for a frag spam on certain locations which is an incredibly effective method of clearing out hardened defensive positions such as trenches, buildings, and bunkers. -If you feel like you are throwing your squad into a meat grinder, change attack locations. I once brought my squad all the way back to the FOB, took a transport across the entire outside of the map and set up a rally far as shit from the objective. My squad was incredible this game, so I felt comfortable giving very specific orders. I told them to line up behind me and to silently creep up on the objective, which they did, albeit roughly, but I didn't get my panties in a bunch. We crept up on the enemy tank, I dropped off my AT and told him to hold until we were ready. We had the commander call in arty when we were like 300m out from the objective. While the arty was going, I set up the SBF and told them to hold fire until my word. The other 5 members crept directly onto the point without a shot fired, cleared out the remnants of the artillery strike, blasted the tank, and defended from counter attack, capturing the point. Conclusion: If you are new to being SL, you won't be able to do all these things at once, and that's okay. Focus on keeping the Rally up, once you can do that effectively, start to really communicate with the commander for fire support and with your squad to call out and mark enemy positions. Once you can keep your rally up and communicate effectively, you can start to emplace the mg and give out more specific orders. Not every squad you have will be open to this, and that's okay. But you're more likely to be able to accomplish things like I listed above when your squad respects you. They respect you when they're having fun, staying in the fight, and not flipping out over stupid shit or blaming the other squads and logistics for sucking. The commander, however, is exempt from that rule. You can make fun of him as much as you want to your squad. Overall just keep your men having fun, if you haven't played SL before, try it. Ask for help. Many squad members are probably good SL's who just aren't feeling the SL role that day. They'll give you useful tips and suggestions. Don't let them make you indecisive, for example, you tell your squad to fall back and someone pipes up to say, "No, I don't fall back because I like getting kills." A good response is, "Listen here, motherfucker, I need a shooter, not a god damn tactician, now fall the fuck back."
Rally point management is literally the most important job of an SL more than anything. If you can figure out how to keep a rally up 90% of the game, you will figure of the rest. I've learned that people that can't even bother to keep the rally point up or complain that it is too hard to deserve to lose. Rally point placement is what separates the amateurs from the great.
I wish there was MORE dependence between units. With DUO teams like the machine gunner and ammo carrier/spotter. Sniper and spotter. etc.Perhaps people also should spawn in 'waves' - so the game waits until the unit is filled with ready players before they're collectively spawned in say a truck from their base of operations. From there they need to drive up to the front. As they're waiting in their barracks they can plan and communicate with commander who can offer them a specific mission. I think this may help more cohesive teamplay, instead of the Free for all like respawn system.
Great video, just one point I want to make in terms of accuracy. The term section was only used by the Commonwealth nations. In the U.S. Army, even back then, we used the term squad.
Good would be to tell us how many roles can be in the team. How squads are composed of individual roles. (I get it. Squad have squad leader, radioman, mg gunner, two medics, two riflemans and two special role. But sometimes I cant take AT guy, when I am sapper. Is it becouse the whole team already have too much AT guys?)
And then the canteen cap magically screws on in one twist. Come on guys, please want yourself for that to look more accurate. My buddy with the Springfield wants a bayonet too.
Ok, this is probably the best tutorial for a game ever on youtube. The 1940s infantry training motif makes it perfect.

Yes. AT roles are at the platoon level instead of the squad level. So not every squad will get AT
