I don’t understand why everyone bashes the “underperformance” of the grizzly’s. I have a completely stock 2016 grizzly and have put that thing through and through it’s paces, even flipped the thing and it has not once not handled a mud pit or any type of off road terrain I threw at it. The thing is a legit beast. So I don’t know where the performance issue comes from that people harp on. If you’re looking to do sand runs, sure the thing is not the quickest out there but that’s why you buy a raptor. The only thing grizzly doesn’t have going for it, they don’t have ‘pretty’ color schemes like can-ams. But I do agree that the SE color scheme in the video is by far the best Yamaha has come out with for their grizzly.
Life long Honda fan and THIS was the machine that made me switch to another brand. Love my new Kodiak 700se. Went shopping for a Rubicon DCT and came home with the Kodiak...... For less money.
I'm the same. Everything I own is Honda. I bought the 2019 camo Kodiak eps and it is awesome. I just don't like the shifting of Hondas transmission and its low engine displacement. I also got a 3000lb winch with mine for a better price than a 500 Honda.
@@Anonymouso283 On mine? It's been great. 1,200 miles so far, I've upgraded to Grizzly weights and installed 27" Reptile radials along the way. The Grizzly weights (80$) woke up the performance quite a bit, definitely above "570" levels now. The heavy stock weights hold the HP back until they were fully shifted out at 45mph and then you could feel the power/speed climb all the way to the limiter @ 63mph.
@rancherlee Good for you man! I was just asking because I’m really debating on selling my can am for a Grizzly. I had a Grizzly around 15 years ago, and man, that thing was great. No problems, no nothing. As for my can am, there’s at least a problem every 3 months, and it’s getting downright ridiculous, so I’m thinking of selling it for a Grizzly. Last year i bought a 2018 Kodiak Hunter edition SE, same options you showed, camo paint. I paid for the winch, plow and upgraded bumper/ brushguard. I will be adding the 2019 Grizzly 700 SE 14 inch rims an tires next. I still have the 700 motor an love the machine. Its is a working beast that i can still play with.
I have an 18 700. Its been great. I did some mods too it and like it now. It ran too hot and lean stock. Tuner, ais delete, and intske it runs perfect now
I love the Yamaha Special Editions; recently acquired a 2019 Viking SE. A vehicle not mentioned much anymore but it’s extremely reliable and well built. Sure more power would be nice, but I’ll take reliability over more headaches. That 686 is bombproof! What I can’t believe is Yamaha putting that same motor in a 6-up vehicle!
Based on this video I sold my two Honda Ranchers and bought a 2019 Kodiak 700 EPS. I was going to buy another Honda, glad I didn't. Love this machine. Waaaaay more power over Honda. Smooth and quiet at speed.
It has the same power as a 570 twin Can-am, expect the Can-am is cheaper. If you’re chasing power, and not reliably go buy a Polaris or Can-am. Why Polaris and Can-am have issues in my experience is they have too much power for their own good, lots of wear and tear from high power output. I want the build quality of Yamaha, with a powerful 1,000R Can-am engine, and Polaris 4x4 system and a Honda foot shift that would be the greatest thing know to man
I have a 2019 eps in gray with almost 1000 miles, I bought it for my daughter, and so far I have no complaints about it, is a very good machine and confi, if you like trails the kodiak is the best!.
Nice job on the video but for anyone who stumbles across this, I want to make sure they are not misled. The difference in price (MSRP) between the Kodiak and Grizzly is $1,100 when both equipped with power steering. (2020 models) The Kodiak EPS is more tuned for lower speed grunt work, while the Grizzly EPS is tuned for higher speed. Also, its true that both use 686 motor, but the Kodiak is tuned more for utility work while the Grizzly is tuned more for recreation. Mid range power is more noticeable on the Grizz. The Grizzly seat height is a little over 2" taller. (I personally like that, but I'm a tall 6'4" rider.) The Grizz is actually 2" wider too. I don't know why, must be due to the shape of the plastics. The Grizz comes with 26" tires, the Kodiak 25" tires. Last, but what I consider most important, is that the Kodiak has a multi-clutch wet brake as the rear brakes, whereas the Grizz has dual disc in the rear. All that combined I think is worth the extra $1,100 bucks. But you're right in that I hope the Kodiak continues to retain the 686 motor and they go with the new 847 in the Grizz. In that scenario, if the price difference between a new Grizz vs a new Kodiak was around $2,000, then I would most likely buy the Kodiak.
Thanks those words really help my pref. So i will go with the kodiak since i dont ride fast and will likely go on hunting trails with a passenger together we both only weight no more then 250 lbs plus guns n back packs.
Just bought a new 700 and took it out today for a 32 mile ride and even at half throttle “ break in” that thing is a BEAST and rides very smooth !!! Great buy !! PS: I’ve owned a Kodiak 400 for 20 years and it’s been a very strong, dependable bike but finally had a issue we couldn’t find 🤷🏼♂️
I like mine I bought the black tactical se kodiak n I couldn't be happier rides great n is very easy to maneuver. It's fun n can haul good weight if needed but I just mainly trail ride n its great. U can lift it to be the same height as the grizzly put bigger tires n through 18g clutch weights n to me its exactly the same. And there back to the bullet proof 686 motor cant beat it.👍👍🇺🇸
I talked to Travis Hollis on Facebook and I asked him were is are 850 or 1000 he said that if everyone ask for it we will build it ,that was over a year so I couldn't wait no more so I got a Sportsman XP 1000 and your brother's review of the 2017 push me over push me over the edge to get one and I couldn't Love it more.
I have a 2012 Grizzly 700 with the same engine. Fantastic bike. may not WOW the pros but a great solid bike for the average rider hands down! Would love to up grade to a 2019 - 2020! Nice review Luke! Thanks for all the info and opinion!
Far as I know my Uncle was the first to stoke the 660 out. He was heavy into riding starting with the 500 Arctic Cat. He was looking for more when the Grizzly's came out. He was from a Drag racing back ground. So he applied his to the 660 birthing far as I know the first 686 stroker. Pipe holes for the intake an drilled out carb Jets running on Race Gas. Soften suspension. He liked the stock tires for trails. Great Bike Sure its still roaming around out there.
I feel Yamaha and Honda should be RACING to put a twin ATV in their lineup. Yamaha is a motor company and they are holding back in that department in their ATV line up. Flex your muscle! Honda. I have a Rincon. The year doesn’t matter because it’s been the same since ‘07. They’ve proven they’re willing to step it up in the SxS market. Keep the ball rolling and get an 800cc and/or a 1000cc ATV out already! They don’t even advertise the Rincon anymore for crying out loud!

The main problem the market for 800s and 1000 is mostly north America and Polaris and canam already have the market flooded. Yamaha sells more 700s worldwide then canam and Polaris 1000 and 800s. So if they out sell there competition why wood they change anything. If there was something like a mud racing league that was half popular then you mite see Yamaha dump so.e time and $ into 4x4 atvs like they do with dirt bikes and sXs
Michael Smith, I’ve had mine since Jan 2012 and it’s been great for me. A lot of complaints are about the transmission. You have to baby it. It’ll crap out if you start shifting from forward to reverse before you’re actually stopped.

I’m a Honda man. But the grizzly is my second choice used one once on a hunting trip. The grizzly is a beast lots of power very comfortable to ride can haul meat no problem
I have a 2018 kodiak special edition. It came with a winch without any cost extra. I think the winch is standard in the special edition package. I'm litle worried with 708 cc engine in my kodiak. It as 2900 km, working with no problem... the reliability issues make me worried. It is a great working machine.

Same here. Lately though I've actually been riding quite a few of these bigger 4x4 quad's. They are extremely comfortable and surprisingly very sporty given there weight and size compared to the pure sports. Now they won't beat any pure sport quad on a track but like I said I was very surprised at how well they handled the faster pace through tight trail's. Looks are deceiving. These are great fun to ride on any type of terrain rather it be wide open spaces or tight trail's. You wouldn't be disappointed with one.
I rode sport quads my whole life. Learned to ride them about anywhere the 4x4 guys went. 2 years ago I bought a sportsman 570, my first big 4x4, and I felt like I was riding the titanic lol. It’s a whole new set of skills to learn. There’s no throwing your weight around to control them, if you get in a bad spot and are going to tip over you better bail out! I ended up selling mine this year and plan on trying a smaller 4x4 like the brute force I can throw around a bit better. These big battleships your just on for the ride although it’s a very comfortable ride.
I’ll give you a example. Your on the trail and come up to one of those long straight up hills. On your raptor you nail the throttle wide open in 2nd gear and ALMOST make it but not quite. You can lock that front brake and hop off to hold the quad in place and figure out what to do. If you don’t make it riding the titanic that thing is going back down the hill with or without you! Lol. There is no fighting gravity with those. As a sport rider I’m sure you have been able to stop many disasters by using your strength and weight to counter it. Big 4x4 you better be damn sure your going to make it first!
Good review; ultimately I went with the Honda rubicon just because of the trans and my ATV use is mostly working my property. The Yamaha was my second choice. Both Yamaha and Honda have great reliability records. If Yamahas had the winches, it certainly would have swayed my purchase.
I love Honda, probably would have made the same choice 4 years ago too but couldn't justify another 500 with 28hp for more money than a Kodiak 700 with 48hp(and for anyone saying their Polaris or Canam has more, remember that when you need to order another one from China). Honda's are bulletproof but that Kodiak engine and transmission are too. Been around a long time and like going from a lawnmower to a motorcycle. Mine had a winch but my buddy who has a '20 has a factory "Yamaha"(Warn) winch
@@matthewvanderbeek1240 Two years ago I would have argued that... until I drove one. 10 year warranty covers the other concern, I've never heard of anyone replacing them. Certainly better for towing and offroad, where most people think a manual is better. But you can do a lot more when you never have to "lose power"(Between shifts) in mud or snow.
Good review, I would definitely be interested in a grizzly 850 or better yet 1000. Questions I have, which has a smoother more plush ride, K or G? Also the 16 grizzly I used to have steered like it had 200 to 300 lbs on the back rack, front end did not seem very planted, I hated the way it turned, does the K turn any better? Thanks
2021 EPS SE includes the paint, decent wheels and a winch. EPS model includes different color options, steel wheels and no winch. I pick my EPS edition tomorrow. .2021 EPS also offers adjustable shocks.
I remember growing up in first part of the 2000s , everyone was in awe of the big grizz 660 and prarie 650 from kawasaki that had came out around 2002 and that was the same time frame eveyone knew the polaris brand was junk and can am wasnt even in any atvers vocabulary yet 😂. The Kadiak in my opinion was a very popular machine up until the 660 was newly released.
I had a couple of Twolves when I was a kid and those little machines were bomb proof! I swear a F-16 could drop a 2000lb ugbl on one and I could get it to drive away.
I couldn't agree more that the Grizzly needs a 850 & a 1000 model. That and some premium 4 way adjustable shocks. Elka, Fox, Walker Evans. Something other than a shock that was made back in the early 70's

I I'm a 2020 grizzly owner and I love that machine but I agree with you 100% the kodiak is esentually a grizzly so my though is for the difference in savings from kodiak compared to the grizzly is that a person could save enough cash by buying the kodiak vs the grizzly and the difference would be enough to purchase a set of elka stage 3 or 4 shocks and it would have a quality suspension setup that would compensate for the lack of wheel travel and would be better on the trail with that setup over the grizzly
Hey Luke, and DTTV! I just went and looked at a base model kodiak. 6300 out the door. My question is, how do these hold up in the mud/trail world? I dont mind building it to what I want it to be.
The box above the engine could be better insulated from heat , though it is an easy fix with the right stick on material just like used on the other outer panels.
Dirt Trax Television, I'm interested in buying a utility quad with tracks. In your opinion, is the 700 Kodiak(or Grizzly) powerful enough for tracks? I've been told that the Sportsman 850 is the way to go. I need tracks because the tires on my 350 Big Bear are full of hawthorn punctures and I don't know of any other solution to this problem.
putting the key on the pod is asking for ignition issues because the wires twisting and turning with the bars . having the display pod mounted off the bars is a better design like can am and cf moto .

No problems with my ‘17 Kodiak with the Subaru 708 so far at least. I don’t see a twin for the grizzly for a long time. They only just started putting a twin in their SxS. For trail riding I really don’t see the need for a twin anyway. Except for bragging rights.
I think it is more likely Yamaha will focus on the 847 parallel twin, which could turn up in the Grizzly at any time. If or when this happens, there's potential there for Yamaha to make a high performance version of the Grizzly to compete with the Scrambler and Renegade.
still own my 97 Kodiak and 2001 Kodiak both 400s when oil cooled other watered cooled both have high in low gears one CVT other 5 speed both are solid reliable I part of a ATV club we trail ride in group of 20s and Honda and Yamaha are the only ones that never have problems and are the oldest ones in the group the Polaris and can am we ride with are newer and always brake down. and the can ams are 3 wheel drive only and they pay like 10,000 for them
@work hard - I have a 2002 Kodiak 400 and it’s really hard to part with to buy this 700. The 400 is really a great machine, I just wish it was fuel injected for those really cold mornings

I have a 2019 Kodiak 700 and am having vibration issues. From 0-45ish it’s fine, anything above that and it shakes the handlebars pretty good. Seems like it does it jacked up off the ground just not as bad. Anyone have any ideas? It almost seems like it clunks when I give it some gas when it’s jacked up. Any help would be appreciated.
Good review however I was wanting more information on the grizzly versus the Kodiak. Specifically , the dealer told me the kodiak has more low end torque and less top end speed . True???
I just bought a 2014 grizzly, does it have the 708cc motor or the 686cc. They seem to change a lot year to year so it's difficult to search the internet for these things.
Vs the Kodiak 450, do you find that the 700 handles better with the gas tank located to the rear/ under seat? (I've looked for a vid comparing the 450 to 700 Kodiak for features/ benefits/ price point). Great vid, and the blue looks nice!
@@coloradokodiak7009 The dealer has the Realtree camo EPS with aluminum wheels for $7627.00 and the gray/black SE for $7707.00. I'm leaning twoards the camo one. I haven't seen them in person yet though so they might be using some stock photos?
I have a 2019 EPS model in gray, the only difference is the paint. I have the 3rd headlight with gauges, dif lock, and aluminum wheels. The SE model was like $1000 more than the EPS
So does the Kodiak EPS not have a locking dif? Cause that's kind of a deal breaker. How about the base model Grizz, which is a little cheaper than a Kodiak SE?
The EPS models do come with the locking front dif. The only difference between the EPS and SE models is the SE models have a painted finish and the shocks have the red colored springs on the shocks. Regular EPS models have colored plastic bodies or a dipped, camo finish on pre-2020 models.
The only difference between the grizzly and the Kodiak is the tune of the motor. the Kodiak is tuned for more lower end torque and power for the farm use and towing where the gridley is more tuned for Mid and high range torque and power for blasting through the trails. That's really what it boils down to.
Great summary. I am shopping to replace my 2007 KQ with 10k miles on it, looking at Grizzly and KQ. But you make an exceptional point with the Kodiak. My question is the transmission in the Kodiak v the Grizzly. Do you know if it's is the same clutching springs and weights etc. in both the Grizzly and the Kodiak? I have heard the Kodiak CVT is not tuned exactly the same. Thanks and great work!
Thank you! First off, you're looking at relatively comparable power, but the Kodiak is geared lower than the Sportsman and I think it may be slightly smaller in size than the Sportsman as well. Go to both dealers and sit on each one and see what feels right for you.
I have a sportsman 570, my dad has a Kodiak. The fit and finish seems much nicer on his bike, but my sportsman is much more fun to ride. His is just slightly faster (10 ft at 100 yards) but my sportsman has a much better ride, and much better handling... I personally like sportsman AWD system better. His bike has super heavy steering even with the EPS. MY SPORTSMAN has great EPS, I can ride it all day with no fatigue. overall they are both great machines, I trail a lot, so I went with sportsman due to better handling and better suspension. I'd go with the Kodiak if I was doing more work...
@@jasonmorehouse3756 I personally disagree, I find my sportsman EPS much better at trail speeds. I do agree that the input is a little too powerful at higher speeds. its fine for me, but im an experienced rider. Someone with less experience could twitch pretty easily. My dads kodiak just seems like it doesn't even have eps at slower speeds. I'll personally take the sportsman EPS for how I ride. Polaris solution should be a staggering assist level, higher assistance at low speeds, lower assistance at higher speeds
Great bike! The Grizzly has 4 disc brakes and the Kodiak has 2 disc brakes. I heard the Kodiak has a bigger radiator, better cooling system then the grizzly. Not sure if that’s true.
Was shopping for 4x4 atvs and excluded yamaha, kawasaki etc and only considered Honda and an FSi kingquad 400.. ended up with a Rancher footshift and a recon ES for my gf.. i kinda wished the dealers near me had other offers, id be down for a kingquad, coming from a mid 90s rider i just dont like cvt quads. Again the Yami is nice though, i waited over a month for my rancher and told dude if he had a kodiak or kingquad show up before my rancher id take it but atvs here in TN are hard to come by. On a tighter trail around my house with my rancher vs my gf recon i felt the recon actually navigated the trail better than my rancher

I have a 2019 kodiak 450. they’re bulletproof, wish it was a manual transmission cause i do a lot of towing and don’t wanna blow a belt. Thats it, they’re awesome.
In 2001 I bought a Grizzly 660 when they were the cat's ass and had it for 3 years before I sold it to buy a house. In 2015 I bought a Can Am Outlander 800 XT Max for my wife and I and got a good deal as they were changing to an 850 for "016". I had an overall good experience with my Grizzly but I wanted the 2 up format with a twin and evidently Yamaha has no interest in such a vehicle otherwise I would have tried them first. The Can Am has been excellent and the difference in power is considerable. You heard the man. Time for a twin already.
You nailed it on the head when you said the grizzly should have a twin. Since Can-Am came out I've always thought that they needed a twin . They need to make the grizzly a Grizzly again. I have loved the dependability of my old Kodiak. It's always got me out of the bush even swamping it a bunch of times, and a lot of the time that was pulling someone else, mainly Polaris bahaha
You guys might want to hook up with AMMO NYC and have some video on paint, quality, care, restoration etc. ATV world is getting serious here, and what does that mean to the user, look toughness and upkeep. S

I'm not up to speed on the reliability issues of the 708. Please explain. It had to be pretty big in order for Yamaha to drop the 708. Most unusual for Yamaha to build a new motor them drop it in 2 years. I have heard everything from EPA issues to just not Yamaha standard. I trust you guy's always to state the facts.
I have a friend that has a new Kodak 700 SE and I’ve ridden it. It has descent power, but it feels like you’re sitting up way too high on it. Maybe because the handlebars sit too low. He made the mistake of riding my Sportsman XP1000 and I could tell by his reaction that he felt he made the wrong purchase. Still a good machine though. Keep up the good work!
I’m looking more for a workhorse machine. How does a kodiak/grizzly compare to a Honda rancher? I guess I’m drawn to Honda because of their reputation for reliability.
I have a 570 and buddy has the Kodiak. I personally like my 570SP over his. A 686cc motor has I think 44hp and my 570 has 42. The Kodiak does great when we trail ride tho. I prefer the 570 for the torque and plush ride. The Kodiak is a better around the house/farm work horse I believe, IMO
Well the sportsman is about 2000 less for the EPS models, has more suspension, but has plastic racks. I have a Polaris and their quality is a lot better than it used to be. I'm sure the Yamaha is a good unit too.
Test road all the 570's and Rubicon before buying the Kodiak 700se. I found the Polaris 570 to ride the best but the handling was sub par and it wasn't nearly as nimble an takes quite a bit more room to turn around. I really comes down to what fits you better, the Kodiak feels "small" and the 570 feels "big". I took the small but nimble over the big but smooth. For me, personally, I feel I can confidently ride faster with the Kodiak as the Polaris felt really "numb" on the trails and took considerably more effort to make it go where I wanted.
I personally think the grizzly is the best looking bike out there and has the best balance of power to weight and more enough power to scare yourself .. I had a 2021 outlander 850 xt and the shocks were apsolutley junk and clutch engagement is not even comparable but if you like speed then the outlander is for you but here where I drive it’s rare to find a place to open up all that power .. kodiak is a nice machine but it is not a grizzly .. grizzly hands down
You're silly , there's a name difference, essentially nothing otherwi6is different in any meaningful way other than getting rich guys to splurge, "I gotta have the best", type of guy deal. Yeah Yamaha heard you guys coming a mile away.
I couldn't agree more!! When I saw that blue/orange SE paints motif on the new Grizzly and Kodiak in the Yamaha line up for the first time. I thought I think I like that paint job on those quads better then any before. Yamaha has always been good at that remember all the cool colors Banshees had?! The 90' or 91' that was gray,purple and white I believe and 96' yellow and purple....I should know somewhere I have the posted on my Facebook, lol. As the key on the finder. I like that! I have a older FourTrax's (here come the Honda haters, lol) and the key is on the handle bar like most quads. Now this is an old quad infact it was my first quad that why I keep it anyways. The key has become lost over time because wear and tear so you have the be careful and support it when turning it off and on. So I think Yamaha think was if the key on the fender it won't be subject to all the movement off the handle bar and causing failure off the key basil...but....it could pose a big problem during aggressive riding by obviously being something you could hit your knee on. Although it looks like they counter sunk it into the fender. I hope I don't sound like I'm arguing I really agree with a lot of your points honestly I'm just curious what other die hard ATV guys think about what I says it. It was awesome review as also!! On the se you get automotive stying paint power steering rims and locking front diff none of that stuff come on the plain Kodak 700.. and if you bought tactical black you could have the winch and it’s now 708cc
It's not a racing machine. It's a work horse that is fun on the trails. I want a reliable machine, if you purchase a Polaris, you'll become best friends with the shop mechanic. The grizz is faster, it's geared different.
All wheel disk breaks on the grizzly. Kodak has a wet drum in the rear. Also completely agree that the Kodak should be upgraded to what the grizzly is now and Give us a more powerful grizzly with maybe a 2 up option. Is love to see that. But that will never happen not anytime soon at least. Frome what I understand the north America market make up the vast majority of sales for atvs over 700cc yamaha sells boat loads to the rest of the world with no real horsepower competition . I believe we will see Kawasaki pit that new parallel twin 1000cc from there new sXs in a atv befor we see yamaha go over 700cc

Life long Honda fan and THIS was the machine that made me switch to another brand. Love my new Kodiak 700se. Went shopping for a Rubicon DCT and came home with the Kodiak...... For less money.
I'm the same. Everything I own is Honda. I bought the 2019 camo Kodiak eps and it is awesome. I just don't like the shifting of Hondas transmission and its low engine displacement. I also got a 3000lb winch with mine for a better price than a 500 Honda.

@@Anonymouso283 On mine? It's been great. 1,200 miles so far, I've upgraded to Grizzly weights and installed 27" Reptile radials along the way. The Grizzly weights (80$) woke up the performance quite a bit, definitely above "570" levels now. The heavy stock weights hold the HP back until they were fully shifted out at 45mph and then you could feel the power/speed climb all the way to the limiter @ 63mph.

Good for you man! I was just asking because I’m really debating on selling my can am for a Grizzly. I had a Grizzly around 15 years ago, and man, that thing was great. No problems, no nothing. As for my can am, there’s at least a problem every 3 months, and it’s getting downright ridiculous, so I’m thinking of selling it for a Grizzly. Thanks for your response by the way :)
Last year i bought a 2018 Kodiak Hunter edition SE, same options you showed, camo paint. I paid for the winch, plow and upgraded bumper/ brushguard. I will be adding the 2019 Grizzly 700 SE 14 inch rims an tires next. I still have the 700 motor an love the machine. Its is a working beast that i can still play with.
I have an 18 700. Its been great. I did some mods too it and like it now. It ran too hot and lean stock. Tuner, ais delete, and intske it runs perfect now
I love the Yamaha Special Editions; recently acquired a 2019 Viking SE. A vehicle not mentioned much anymore but it’s extremely reliable and well built. Sure more power would be nice, but I’ll take reliability over more headaches. That 686 is bombproof! What I can’t believe is Yamaha putting that same motor in a 6-up vehicle!
Based on this video I sold my two Honda Ranchers and bought a 2019 Kodiak 700 EPS. I was going to buy another Honda, glad I didn't. Love this machine. Waaaaay more power over Honda. Smooth and quiet at speed.
It has the same power as a 570 twin Can-am, expect the Can-am is cheaper. If you’re chasing power, and not reliably go buy a Polaris or Can-am. Why Polaris and Can-am have issues in my experience is they have too much power for their own good, lots of wear and tear from high power output. I want the build quality of Yamaha, with a powerful 1,000R Can-am engine, and Polaris 4x4 system and a Honda foot shift that would be the greatest thing know to man
I have a 2019 eps in gray with almost 1000 miles, I bought it for my daughter, and so far I have no complaints about it, is a very good machine and confi, if you like trails the kodiak is the best!.

Nice job on the video but for anyone who stumbles across this, I want to make sure they are not misled. The difference in price (MSRP) between the Kodiak and Grizzly is $1,100 when both equipped with power steering. (2020 models)
The Kodiak EPS is more tuned for lower speed grunt work, while the Grizzly EPS is tuned for higher speed. Also, its true that both use 686 motor, but the Kodiak is tuned more for utility work while the Grizzly is tuned more for recreation. Mid range power is more noticeable on the Grizz.
The Grizzly seat height is a little over 2" taller. (I personally like that, but I'm a tall 6'4" rider.) The Grizz is actually 2" wider too. I don't know why, must be due to the shape of the plastics.
The Grizz comes with 26" tires, the Kodiak 25" tires.
Last, but what I consider most important, is that the Kodiak has a multi-clutch wet brake as the rear brakes, whereas the Grizz has dual disc in the rear.
All that combined I think is worth the extra $1,100 bucks. But you're right in that I hope the Kodiak continues to retain the 686 motor and they go with the new 847 in the Grizz. In that scenario, if the price difference between a new Grizz vs a new Kodiak was around $2,000, then I would most likely buy the Kodiak.
Thanks those words really help my pref. So i will go with the kodiak since i dont ride fast and will likely go on hunting trails with a passenger together we both only weight no more then 250 lbs plus guns n back packs.
Just bought a new 700 and took it out today for a 32 mile ride and even at half throttle “ break in” that thing is a BEAST and rides very smooth !!! Great buy !! PS: I’ve owned a Kodiak 400 for 20 years and it’s been a very strong, dependable bike but finally had a issue we couldn’t find 🤷🏼♂️

I like mine I bought the black tactical se kodiak n I couldn't be happier rides great n is very easy to maneuver. It's fun n can haul good weight if needed but I just mainly trail ride n its great. U can lift it to be the same height as the grizzly put bigger tires n through 18g clutch weights n to me its exactly the same. And there back to the bullet proof 686 motor cant beat it.👍👍🇺🇸
I talked to Travis Hollis on Facebook and I asked him were is are 850 or 1000 he said that if everyone ask for it we will build it ,that was over a year so I couldn't wait no more so I got a Sportsman XP 1000 and your brother's review of the 2017 push me over push me over the edge to get one and I couldn't Love it more.
I have a 2012 Grizzly 700 with the same engine. Fantastic bike. may not WOW the pros but a great solid bike for the average rider hands down! Would love to up grade to a 2019 - 2020! Nice review Luke! Thanks for all the info and opinion!
Far as I know my Uncle was the first to stoke the 660 out. He was heavy into riding starting with the 500 Arctic Cat. He was looking for more when the Grizzly's came out. He was from a Drag racing back ground. So he applied his to the 660 birthing far as I know the first 686 stroker. Pipe holes for the intake an drilled out carb Jets running on Race Gas. Soften suspension. He liked the stock tires for trails. Great Bike Sure its still roaming around out there.

Honda. I have a Rincon. The year doesn’t matter because it’s been the same since ‘07. They’ve proven they’re willing to step it up in the SxS market. Keep the ball rolling and get an 800cc and/or a 1000cc ATV out already! They don’t even advertise the Rincon anymore for crying out loud!
Brandon T I too been saying for years that Yamaha needs a 850 or 1000. So I got a 2018 Sportsman XP 1000 couldn't love it more.

The main problem the market for 800s and 1000 is mostly north America and Polaris and canam already have the market flooded. Yamaha sells more 700s worldwide then canam and Polaris 1000 and 800s. So if they out sell there competition why wood they change anything. If there was something like a mud racing league that was half popular then you mite see Yamaha dump so.e time and $ into 4x4 atvs like they do with dirt bikes and sXs
Michael Smith, I’ve had mine since Jan 2012 and it’s been great for me. A lot of complaints are about the transmission. You have to baby it. It’ll crap out if you start shifting from forward to reverse before you’re actually stopped.

I’m a Honda man. But the grizzly is my second choice used one once on a hunting trip. The grizzly is a beast lots of power very comfortable to ride can haul meat no problem

I have a 2018 kodiak special edition. It came with a winch without any cost extra. I think the winch is standard in the special edition package. I'm litle worried with 708 cc engine in my kodiak. It as 2900 km, working with no problem... the reliability issues make me worried. It is a great working machine.

Same here. Lately though I've actually been riding quite a few of these bigger 4x4 quad's. They are extremely comfortable and surprisingly very sporty given there weight and size compared to the pure sports. Now they won't beat any pure sport quad on a track but like I said I was very surprised at how well they handled the faster pace through tight trail's. Looks are deceiving. These are great fun to ride on any type of terrain rather it be wide open spaces or tight trail's. You wouldn't be disappointed with one.

I rode sport quads my whole life. Learned to ride them about anywhere the 4x4 guys went. 2 years ago I bought a sportsman 570, my first big 4x4, and I felt like I was riding the titanic lol. It’s a whole new set of skills to learn. There’s no throwing your weight around to control them, if you get in a bad spot and are going to tip over you better bail out! I ended up selling mine this year and plan on trying a smaller 4x4 like the brute force I can throw around a bit better. These big battleships your just on for the ride although it’s a very comfortable ride.
I’ll give you a example. Your on the trail and come up to one of those long straight up hills. On your raptor you nail the throttle wide open in 2nd gear and ALMOST make it but not quite. You can lock that front brake and hop off to hold the quad in place and figure out what to do. If you don’t make it riding the titanic that thing is going back down the hill with or without you! Lol. There is no fighting gravity with those. As a sport rider I’m sure you have been able to stop many disasters by using your strength and weight to counter it. Big 4x4 you better be damn sure your going to make it first!
For the money this is a great machine. I looked hard at the Can Am Outlander 570 DPS and the Yamaha build quality and reputation won out.
Good review; ultimately I went with the Honda rubicon just because of the trans and my ATV use is mostly working my property. The Yamaha was my second choice. Both Yamaha and Honda have great reliability records. If Yamahas had the winches, it certainly would have swayed my purchase.

I love Honda, probably would have made the same choice 4 years ago too but couldn't justify another 500 with 28hp for more money than a Kodiak 700 with 48hp(and for anyone saying their Polaris or Canam has more, remember that when you need to order another one from China). Honda's are bulletproof but that Kodiak engine and transmission are too. Been around a long time and like going from a lawnmower to a motorcycle. Mine had a winch but my buddy who has a '20 has a factory "Yamaha"(Warn) winch
@@matthewvanderbeek1240 Two years ago I would have argued that... until I drove one. 10 year warranty covers the other concern, I've never heard of anyone replacing them. Certainly better for towing and offroad, where most people think a manual is better. But you can do a lot more when you never have to "lose power"(Between shifts) in mud or snow.

2021 EPS SE includes the paint, decent wheels and a winch. EPS model includes different color options, steel wheels and no winch. I pick my EPS edition tomorrow. .2021 EPS also offers adjustable shocks.

I remember growing up in first part of the 2000s , everyone was in awe of the big grizz 660 and prarie 650 from kawasaki that had came out around 2002 and that was the same time frame eveyone knew the polaris brand was junk and can am wasnt even in any atvers vocabulary yet 😂. The Kadiak in my opinion was a very popular machine up until the 660 was newly released.
I had a couple of Twolves when I was a kid and those little machines were bomb proof! I swear a F-16 could drop a 2000lb ugbl on one and I could get it to drive away.

I couldn't agree more that the Grizzly needs a 850 & a 1000 model. That and some premium 4 way adjustable shocks. Elka, Fox, Walker Evans. Something other than a shock that was made back in the early 70's

I I'm a 2020 grizzly owner and I love that machine but I agree with you 100% the kodiak is esentually a grizzly so my though is for the difference in savings from kodiak compared to the grizzly is that a person could save enough cash by buying the kodiak vs the grizzly and the difference would be enough to purchase a set of elka stage 3 or 4 shocks and it would have a quality suspension setup that would compensate for the lack of wheel travel and would be better on the trail with that setup over the grizzly

Hey Luke, and DTTV! I just went and looked at a base model kodiak. 6300 out the door. My question is, how do these hold up in the mud/trail world? I dont mind building it to what I want it to be.
The box above the engine could be better insulated from heat , though it is an easy fix with the right stick on material just like used on the other outer panels.
Dirt Trax Television, I'm interested in buying a utility quad with tracks. In your opinion, is the 700 Kodiak(or Grizzly) powerful enough for tracks? I've been told that the Sportsman 850 is the way to go. I need tracks because the tires on my 350 Big Bear are full of hawthorn punctures and I don't know of any other solution to this problem.

putting the key on the pod is asking for ignition issues because the wires twisting and turning with the bars . having the display pod mounted off the bars is a better design like can am and cf moto .

I think it is more likely Yamaha will focus on the 847 parallel twin, which could turn up in the Grizzly at any time. If or when this happens, there's potential there for Yamaha to make a high performance version of the Grizzly to compete with the Scrambler and Renegade.

still own my 97 Kodiak and 2001 Kodiak both 400s when oil cooled other watered cooled both have high in low gears one CVT other 5 speed both are solid reliable I part of a ATV club we trail ride in group of 20s and Honda and Yamaha are the only ones that never have problems and are the oldest ones in the group the Polaris and can am we ride with are newer and always brake down. and the can ams are 3 wheel drive only and they pay like 10,000 for them
@work hard - I have a 2002 Kodiak 400 and it’s really hard to part with to buy this 700. The 400 is really a great machine, I just wish it was fuel injected for those really cold mornings

I have a 2019 Kodiak 700 and am having vibration issues. From 0-45ish it’s fine, anything above that and it shakes the handlebars pretty good. Seems like it does it jacked up off the ground just not as bad. Anyone have any ideas? It almost seems like it clunks when I give it some gas when it’s jacked up. Any help would be appreciated.
Update: my rear rims were bent slightly. Put new rims on and problem solved!

Good review however I was wanting more information on the grizzly versus the Kodiak. Specifically , the dealer told me the kodiak has more low end torque and less top end speed . True???

Other than the paint what separates the EPS SE from the EPS?
A dealer near me has 2019's for about the same price. The se's are gray and black.
Paint and aluminum wheels are the only differences from the EPS and EPS SE.

I have a 2019 EPS model in gray, the only difference is the paint. I have the 3rd headlight with gauges, dif lock, and aluminum wheels. The SE model was like $1000 more than the EPS

How about the base model Grizz, which is a little cheaper than a Kodiak SE?
The EPS models do come with the locking front dif. The only difference between the EPS and SE models is the SE models have a painted finish and the shocks have the red colored springs on the shocks. Regular EPS models have colored plastic bodies or a dipped, camo finish on pre-2020 models.

The only difference between the grizzly and the Kodiak is the tune of the motor. the Kodiak is tuned for more lower end torque and power for the farm use and towing where the gridley is more tuned for Mid and high range torque and power for blasting through the trails. That's really what it boils down to.
Yep, it's little smaller in stature than the Grizzly. More like the old body style, but you're bang on about the dkey differences.

My question is the transmission in the Kodiak v the Grizzly. Do you know if it's is the same clutching springs and weights etc. in both the Grizzly and the Kodiak? Thank you! First off, you're looking at relatively comparable power, but the Kodiak is geared lower than the Sportsman and I think it may be slightly smaller in size than the Sportsman as well. Go to both dealers and sit on each one and see what feels right for you.
@@dirttraxtv one thing I think the industry has lost sight of, larger dimensions don't always mean better because they're not going to be as nimble.
I have a sportsman 570, my dad has a Kodiak. The fit and finish seems much nicer on his bike, but my sportsman is much more fun to ride. His is just slightly faster (10 ft at 100 yards) but my sportsman has a much better ride, and much better handling... I personally like sportsman AWD system better. His bike has super heavy steering even with the EPS. MY SPORTSMAN has great EPS, I can ride it all day with no fatigue.
overall they are both great machines, I trail a lot, so I went with sportsman due to better handling and better suspension. I'd go with the Kodiak if I was doing more work...

My dads kodiak just seems like it doesn't even have eps at slower speeds.

Polaris solution should be a staggering assist level, higher assistance at low speeds, lower assistance at higher speeds
Great bike! The Grizzly has 4 disc brakes and the Kodiak has 2 disc brakes. I heard the Kodiak has a bigger radiator, better cooling system then the grizzly. Not sure if that’s true.
Was shopping for 4x4 atvs and excluded yamaha, kawasaki etc and only considered Honda and an FSi kingquad 400.. ended up with a Rancher footshift and a recon ES for my gf.. i kinda wished the dealers near me had other offers, id be down for a kingquad, coming from a mid 90s rider i just dont like cvt quads. Again the Yami is nice though, i waited over a month for my rancher and told dude if he had a kodiak or kingquad show up before my rancher id take it but atvs here in TN are hard to come by.
On a tighter trail around my house with my rancher vs my gf recon i felt the recon actually navigated the trail better than my rancher

I have a 2019 kodiak 450. they’re bulletproof, wish it was a manual transmission cause i do a lot of towing and don’t wanna blow a belt. Thats it, they’re awesome.
I have an old 2003 Kodiak 400 and have never put a belt in it. Good machine but would be handy of it had low range every once in a while.

In 2001 I bought a Grizzly 660 when they were the cat's ass and had it for 3 years before I sold it to buy a house. In 2015 I bought a Can Am Outlander 800 XT Max for my wife and I and got a good deal as they were changing to an 850 for "016". I had an overall good experience with my Grizzly but I wanted the 2 up format with a twin and evidently Yamaha has no interest in such a vehicle otherwise I would have tried them first. The Can Am has been excellent and the difference in power is considerable. You heard the man. Time for a twin already.

You nailed it on the head when you said the grizzly should have a twin. Since Can-Am came out I've always thought that they needed a twin . They need to make the grizzly a Grizzly again. I have loved the dependability of my old Kodiak. It's always got me out of the bush even swamping it a bunch of times, and a lot of the time that was pulling someone else, mainly Polaris bahaha

I'm not up to speed on the reliability issues of the 708. Please explain. It had to be pretty big in order for Yamaha to drop the 708. Most unusual for Yamaha to build a new motor them drop it in 2 years. I have heard everything from EPA issues to just not Yamaha standard. I trust you guy's always to state the facts.
The 708 has issues. Smoking, oil consumption. If u choose yamaha get the 686cc.
I have a friend that has a new Kodak 700 SE and I’ve ridden it. It has descent power, but it feels like you’re sitting up way too high on it. Maybe because the handlebars sit too low. He made the mistake of riding my Sportsman XP1000 and I could tell by his reaction that he felt he made the wrong purchase. Still a good machine though. Keep up the good work!

I have a 570 and buddy has the Kodiak. I personally like my 570SP over his. A 686cc motor has I think 44hp and my 570 has 42. The Kodiak does great when we trail ride tho. I prefer the 570 for the torque and plush ride. The Kodiak is a better around the house/farm work horse I believe, IMO
Well the sportsman is about 2000 less for the EPS models, has more suspension, but has plastic racks. I have a Polaris and their quality is a lot better than it used to be. I'm sure the Yamaha is a good unit too.

Test road all the 570's and Rubicon before buying the Kodiak 700se. I found the Polaris 570 to ride the best but the handling was sub par and it wasn't nearly as nimble an takes quite a bit more room to turn around. I really comes down to what fits you better, the Kodiak feels "small" and the 570 feels "big". I took the small but nimble over the big but smooth. For me, personally, I feel I can confidently ride faster with the Kodiak as the Polaris felt really "numb" on the trails and took considerably more effort to make it go where I wanted.
How does it compare to a Foreman 520 ?
Definitely faster belt vs shaft driven i had a rubicon it was slow compared to these

I don't know if Yamaha ever had a winch as a standard feature for any quad model.
Just looked at 2020 700 SE Matte addition at dealer. Came with a 2500 Worn winch installed from factory
Would it be a bad thing for Yamaha to go to a shaft drive instead of a belt? Just curious what everyone else thinks about this

I personally think the grizzly is the best looking bike out there and has the best balance of power to weight and more enough power to scare yourself .. I had a 2021 outlander 850 xt and the shocks were apsolutley junk and clutch engagement is not even comparable but if you like speed then the outlander is for you but here where I drive it’s rare to find a place to open up all that power .. kodiak is a nice machine but it is not a grizzly .. grizzly hands down

I couldn't agree more!! When I saw that blue/orange SE paints motif on the new Grizzly and Kodiak in the Yamaha line up for the first time. I thought I think I like that paint job on those quads better then any before. Yamaha has always been good at that remember all the cool colors Banshees had?! The 90' or 91' that was gray,purple and white I believe and 96' yellow and purple....I should know somewhere I have the posted on my Facebook, lol. As the key on the finder. I like that! I have a older FourTrax's (here come the Honda haters, lol) and the key is on the handle bar like most quads. Now this is an old quad infact it was my first quad that why I keep it anyways. The key has become lost over time because wear and tear so you have the be careful and support it when turning it off and on. So I think Yamaha think was if the key on the fender it won't be subject to all the movement off the handle bar and causing failure off the key basil...but....it could pose a big problem during aggressive riding by obviously being something you could hit your knee on. Although it looks like they counter sunk it into the fender. I hope I don't sound like I'm arguing I really agree with a lot of your points honestly I'm just curious what other die hard ATV guys think about what I says it. It was awesome review as also!! On the se you get automotive stying paint power steering rims and locking front diff none of that stuff come on the plain Kodak 700.. and if you bought tactical black you could have the winch and it’s now 708cc

It's not a racing machine. It's a work horse that is fun on the trails. I want a reliable machine, if you purchase a Polaris, you'll become best friends with the shop mechanic. The grizz is faster, it's geared different.
In Europe all Kodiaks and Grizzlys are sold with the Warn 2500
All wheel disk breaks on the grizzly. Kodak has a wet drum in the rear.
Also completely agree that the Kodak should be upgraded to what the grizzly is now and Give us a more powerful grizzly with maybe a 2 up option. Is love to see that. But that will never happen not anytime soon at least. Frome what I understand the north America market make up the vast majority of sales for atvs over 700cc yamaha sells boat loads to the rest of the world with no real horsepower competition .
I believe we will see Kawasaki pit that new parallel twin 1000cc from there new sXs in a atv befor we see yamaha go over 700cc

Brute force 750 se, also has no winch included dosnt it, ?, another Japanese brand that gives a paint job for an se package
From what i see on prices they are both the same within $500 of each other
