  • We need to get this little 6 ready to go back into the engine compartment.
Come along and help me get new seals and gaskets back on it, adjust the valvetrain, and geek out with lasers.

I did the same engine freshen up on my rampside about 12 years ago. Only I upgraded it to a 140. It has a 4 speed and I dual exhaust it. For real cheap I got just the U pipes from Clarks and I found a nice pair of SS turbo style mufflers at a swap meet for like 40 bux! And welded them straight to the U pipe and a small section of straight SS pipe for the outlet with a mount tab and done. Now the Rampy is actually a 442!😊
One thing I see you doing that really bothers me is working on an open engine and not taking the time to cover up the openings.
I guess that's my Aviation training kicking in!
    Anyway nice work.
    Cheers.

Another awesome video; Again I like the humor you inject. As far the exhaust I would apply the kiss method. $500 is $500 money well spent somewhere else IMHO. On all late model Corvairs the engine bay was done in all black, & on early's body color. looking forward to the next video.

The crankshaft timing mark is a microscopic notch on the inside edge (toward the crankcase) or the sealing surface for the rear main seal. The thing you thought is the timing mark on the crank, is just some random marks that serves some othe purpose.
(Your timing is set correctly tho)

Great work sir Jay! Thanks for bringing us along. That thing reminds me of an airplane engine. It Should make your lil’ Corvair fly! (But I think you forgot the water pump). Just kidding!!! Couldn’t resist!

on most trans the converter goes in the trans first and bolts last.that to make so the converter is in all the way to avoid damage to the pump.

Looks like ole Dirty Airy isn't so dirty anymore. Guessing (because I don't know), from the valve adjustment that you have hydraulic lifters. At the end you gave 1 final turn. Some guys say 1 1/2 turns. I suppose that could vary depending on the engine??? Or is it one of those "That's the way my dad (or whomever) taught me & it works for me so why change?" type deals? Thanks for another ride.

Hydraulic valves on the Corvair are set at 3/4 to 1 turn down for proper operation. If you use aftermarket lifters then you might get away with 1/2 to 3/4 turn down. I prefer to set mine running though by loosing and then tightening to about 2/3 down. That worked well for me.

For me on a Corvair, it's because that's what the book said to do!

I'd be more inclined to switch to dual exhaust if I had the 4-speed tranny..... Looks like you're doing a jam-up job on that cool car!

You should support the transaxle at the starter hole location.Yeah the timing marks are strange but the keyways are pretty good at setting timing. You look good for timing.

Dual exhaust for 110 h.p. be a waste especially with a power robbing turbo muffler. Which is where they originally came from - Corvairs. Single or dual just go with straight pipe and save some $$$

Nope… engine compartment should be black. If your not going to clean up the heads to breathe better…. Stick with stock exhaust.
