It's hard leaving the garden. I have 6000 sf and I've been sick with the flu all week. As a result, I've had to have someone come in and water, so who knows what I will see when (hopefully) I am well enough to take a look out there tomorrow. I've definitely had mixed results, having others water for me over the years. Generally, either they miss a bunch if spots, or they drown things. 😂
Should have done the flower trick this year before going on vaca. Had a 2 day lag where the folks keeping an eye on my garden were actually on vaca near the end of mine, and I came home to cukes the size of my forearm. Plants all stopped producing after that, unfortunately. Lesson learned, and thanks for the tip!
This was very interesting. I usually just pay someone to water. That doesn’t always work but recently I used a gardening store. It costs a lot but at least my plants survived
Wow! I was impressed with the end result of your seedlings. I'm so glad that you were finally able to take a vacation. Hopefully, you guys had an amazing time. Living here in Beaumont, CA it's been so hot that I haven't even started my Fall crops, yet. Unsure, if I missed my opportunity to start seedlings or if I should just go buy them at nursery. What are your thoughts? I really like the concept of adding wet soil to your seedlings 🌱. Did you just leave your seedlings in place the entire time or place them in the greenhouse at night? Thank you, for the update.
Could be that the emitter is pushing water to the edge for sure. I went with the sprayer so I could easily turn them off when not in use but stop rings with a shutoff would be ideal
As always, a good video….and I learned something about sowing the seed ..shade cloth…tray of soil! When you mentioned bicarbonate when talking about powdery mildew on some of your plants, please repeat the information. I will try any proven remedy! 😊
any tips for headwaves? I live north of San Diego in the IE (Temecula) and after consistent temperatures above 100 during the most recent heatwave a lot of my plants (especially younger ones) were decimated. Luckily I do have a bunch of seedlings in the garage but It would have been nice to have keep a lot more of the plants I already established.
@@jacquesinthegarden I cannot wait to officially garden next year. You and Kevin have really inspired me so much. I'm a higher functioning autistic 29 year old woman.
hi jacques 🤗 i think i just missed you at today's seed swap event, but I did leave you and kevin notes on the white boards. i needed this video and will definitely try these tips before my next vacation. tfs
Looks like some of the plants benefit from drip or emitter regular watering that you might just want to keep in place and save yourself work. But I’m sure you know that already
I never leave my yard during the summer. I don’t trust anyone to do the right thing. I vacation on fall and winter. I don’t like to travel when it’s hot.
Thankfully I don't have to worry about watering the garden at all since I DIYed my own automated "ollas" by attaching a 3D-printed plastic cap with a grommet that accepts 1/4 inch tubing coming from a 90-gallon barrel that collects rainwater. I use it in my pots and raised beds. I even started selling them on Ebay too. I just seeded under my tomato plants with clover, I'm curious what you think about cover crops in the garden (a quick search of your videos didn't show anything).
Could you even add some drip irrigation to the soil in thevtrays under the seedlings and not even need your friend to help out. And also not need to water them one or two times a day yourself either?
I did the same with a plastic bin. I took some pvc piping lined the bottom in a T Frame and a L pipe to have come up above the soil. put a screen over the opening so the pipe didnt clog up. I only water my seedlings once a week.
Ok…Arizona here…I have no space inside to seed start, no space. I would be able to build what you have there! Please tell me how effective it is in the heat…I so want to start my fall garden the way you show on this video! I have the seeds, soil and am so ready..and will sure save me $$..
I should have trimmed the leaves back earlier to eliminate populations. At this point it's pretty hard to get rid of them outside of trying to squish them in the leaf. You can kinda see them if you look carefully and you can pinch the leaf right where they are that kills them.
Nice. How fun. I barely got any chances to water my garden this year. 😢 I'm at Seattle. We had may be like 3 days over 80 degrees F!!!! I was away on a 8 day long vacation, and my garden was just fine. Even the planters didn't dry out. 😢I know some of you will see this as an advantage, but no, it's really not that great to grow a lot of stuff 😢
Yes, but can you demonstrate how to garden-proof a vacation...?
Heheheh heheheheh! ❤
That one has no cure sorry, everywhere you go you will think about gardens
It’s always great to come back from vacation and see your plants thriving! Love it when a plan works out.
Totally agree, it makes me feel comfortable taking more trips.
@@jacquesinthegarden bribe Eric to help you water 🤣

Just want to say I love your videos!! Everyone at epic is amazing but you're my favorite!
Had a Jacques in the Wild sighting this morning! Easy to recognize with the hat.
Also came back from a vacation. Hubs had a list of things to do to take care of the garden. He enjoyed harvesting the fruits and veggies!
Brilliant! I am totally going to try doing this! because my seedlings sometimes suffer when i forget to water them.
Those seedlings are fantastic, such great tips for traveling
Okay, the soil wicking mat is simply genius!! Thank you for sharing! I will have to borrow that... with proper credit, of course! 😁
The seedling system is awesome. I’ve been afraid to start anything in cells and this looks like a can do for me.
Winner idea- wicking tray!!!
Aw dang you! My passionfruit didnt give me a ripe fruit. But to be fair this was its first year so probably wasnt going to happen.
Great plan you had while being away. It all looks fantastic! What is the variety of those beautiful strawberries? Thanks!
It's a mix of seascape and Albion which are good day neutral varieties.
Well done 👏

Wonderful presentation !
Maybe it would help the mildew if you replaced the emitters in the pots in the greenhouse with drip rings under the straw mulch? Worth a try...
Could be that the emitter is pushing water to the edge for sure. I went with the sprayer so I could easily turn them off when not in use but stop rings with a shutoff would be ideal

We can never escape the powdery mildew here in SoCal 😢
Hi. I have bought your seeds and I can't wait to grow them next year.
🙌 that's awesome, wishing you the best and hoping for a good spring season

Will definitely copy that shade cloth/wet soil in tray method! Thanks Jacques! Brilliant idea, sir! 👏
The seedlings honestly look better than they usually do!
Loved the seed starting idea!! Need to figure out how to make it!!
Great video! Enjoyed!
HI Jacques. Should I be trimming off the blossoms of my cucumber plant like I do with my strawberry plants?
Great tips, thank you!

Many good tips in here.

What is your leaf minor treatment?
Awe man i could of used this video a few weeks ago. No casualties with the heavy mulch but definitely some stress.

Ooh I love the seedlings for fall. I have a short growing season, but very intense sun and heat in July/Aug, lol. So tough to plan
When they cruised through the multiple 100 degree days I was truly impressed!

Oh that's really cool, love the idea of building a deeper reservoir
It also turned into its own rain catch system too.

You just need to put a sprinkler in the seedlings area bottom tray and then you won’t need someone to come water.
Irrigation* sprinkler or drip
I have leaf-miner also. How will you be treating them?
Leaf miners love cucumbers. Very frustrating! How would you treat it?

Good tips
Glad it was helpful!
Is there a video for the water lines you put in? Or what's that product called?
I keep promising I'll make one, I have some details and links in the raised bed irrigation video I posted earlier this year.
Ojai has been so hot and I lost so much. I can't even leave for a day . I'm married to my garden ☮️
Consistent heat definitely makes it best impossible unfortunately 😞
I know the feeling, I live in Phoenix 😅
Me too Scottsdale here…good plants zero harvest too hot..
Bacterial wilt …from cucumber beetles. They killed my cantaloupe and my cukes. My nemesis 😐
Why potassium bicarbonate and not sodium bicarbonate aka baking soda?

That is honestly really rough and I totally get it. Sometimes I get long cool spells and it is really not good for the plants
