    I started taping nearly four years ago. I was experiencing obstructive sleep apnea, dreaming that I was drowning. Th e ENT dismissed me completely and was steering me to a CPAP. My wise husband said that would never work for me. I sleep with a pillow over my head and on my side. Anyway, I was exhausted all the time, my blood pressure was climbing and then the apnea. So! I found the taping after loads of research. Adapted to it in a few days, slept like a baby, blood pressure is normal. And the ENT was skeptical BUT said he wish he could have done a sleep study on me before I taped. BTW I was recording myself at night before and after and it was dramatic! I never sleep without tape now. Never. The tape does not ‘train’ me; I have a recessed jaw and my mouth will always fall open. So I need the tape and use it vertically. Also follow the Buteyko Clinic. I’m over 60 and this was a life changer.

    You know James, it wouldn't suprise me if you could write an eye opening book about crying... The way a deep emotional cry helps me to get my breath back for days and longer amazes me every time. Especialy if i couldn't cry for a long time. Like now with all the lockdown stress. It makes a lockdown of my whole breating system. Sometimes so heavy that breating exersizes don't work..... But a deep cry does... Thanks for everything you do at the moment. The world benefits bigtime!

    Been doing mouth taping for about two months made a huge difference in my sleep and I no longer get any kind of brain fog that I used to get. I just feel more awake and alert during my waking hours. So easy to do I almost never even notice the tape over my mouth, don't ever wake up in the night with a dry mouth anymore stopped my snoring everything is better by just doing this little thing before going to sleep.

    I love the amount of things that are right under our noses that we don't know about that have a major impact on our health. Pun intended. I feel like the more we self-asses our health by learning how our bodies and minds work, the more we can naturally return to homeostasis because we are making healthier choices. A healthy us also means we will be happier and we will also be able to help others.
    I have noticed that the more we learn how to use this human mechanism, we will naturally be able to diagnose our loved ones/anyone with whatever they are going through. There are multiple reasons for everything usually, but one thing I have learned it's the smallest things that makes the biggest change. Starting with breathing.

    Hello to both of you. Great interview. Thank you.
    I have some thoughts I would like to add.
    A diaphragm is a type of structure, a sheet attached to a fame. There are more than 18 diaphragms in the head, sheets of muscle and connective tissue attached to a mostly boney frame. One of the many wondrous capacities of diaphragms is the capacity to change the pressure gradient, like a sail, a parachute, a kite. This capacity of our thoracic diaphragm is what makes inhalation happen. The diaphragms in the head are auxiliary pumps in the hydraulic system that is you. Mouth breathing puts a hole in your hydraulic system causing congestion of the the extracellular fluid, the lymph. Anything congested with lymph will be 1)stiff and thick (like a plant stem is stiff when full of fluid) 2)it will probably be painful or at least tender and 3)it will always lack the vitality that it could have if it were not congested. So, it is very important to clear congestion from the tissues. The thing that clears extracellular congestion from the tissues is the orchestra of diaphragms found stabilizing every major joint complex and autonomic hub in the body. This orchestra is conducted by the thoracic diaphragm. When a complete yogic breath originates with the muscle fibers of the diaphragm attached to the front of the spine, it ripples through the diaphragm in a wave like fashion. In doing so, it grabs the grastroesophageal junction with the lower esophageal sphincter and pulls it downward. This is the pulling sensation that you feel at the front of your throat and under your chin. The mouth, the pharynx, the esophagus and the stomach are all one tube. So a good inhalation with the mouth closed and the tongue suction sealed to the roof of the mouth will cause a flux in the floor of the mouth that changes the pressure gradient in the center of the head, the seat of autonomic control. It brings breath to the center of the head. Who would not benefit from better fluid motion in the center of the head.
    The floor of the mouth is the most important diaphragm in the head. It is the one that triggers all of the others to come on line and participate in moving air and fluid in the head. When the mouth is left open, the the breath does not effectively reach the head. Extracellular fluid becomes congestion. The airways become narrow with swollen and stiff respiratory epithelium. Respiratory epithelium is equipped with cilia, microscopic hairlike projections that beat in a wave like fashion, sweeping secretions to the pharynx. Stiffened cilia do not do a good job sweeping secretions and the mouth breather develops nasal congestion.
    I am an osteopathic physician. I do a lot of manual medicine inside peoples' mouths. I have found that most people, even seemingly healthy ones have moderate to severe congestion of their mucosa as evidence by stiffness and thickening of the tissues. Sometimes these tissue texture changes feel like chia seeds or even pea sized lumps under the mucosa. Sometimes like grains of sand, sometime a whole patch of tissue will be found to be hardened with congestion. These areas are almost invariably exquisitely tender to palpation. This is most pronounce under the tongue, the floor of the mouth. As the floor of the mouth becomes increasing thickened and stiff with chronic congestion, it is further obstructed in performing its job of bringing breath to the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Simultaneously it distorts the alignment of the temporalmandibular joint.
    Moreover, chronic lymphatic congestion results in an extracellular environment with a high concentration of metabolic waste product. If the high concentration of waste accumulates inside of the cell, it will have a deleterious effect on the forward motion of your biochemistry. This results in slower metabolism, slower cell repair...

    Thank you for the great video/interview, and all the info! I've known mouth breathing is bad for teeth and general health, but I had no idea how bad! I've been having throat issues for a couple years now (sore throat...) but the other night when I awoke with a horribly dry mouth and throat from mouth breathing I finally started googling--and found the CNN article that links to this video. Halleluiah!
    Last night was the first time I tried mouth-taping... and:
    • This morning I awoke refreshed for the first time in a long time. There was no urge to stay in bed and sleep in. I did not awake exhausted. Amazing.
    • It’s much more comfortable to breathe through my mouth (today) I think because my nose does not feel so dry. Isn’t that weird?! My nose today doesn’t feel so dry that it’s uncomfortable to breathe through it.
    • I did awake with a sore throat, but I have the feeling this will take some time to heal my throat. But maybe not a long time: My throat is looking so much better than it did yesterday, less red and inflamed.
    • During the morning the soreness subsided quickly.
    • I was skeptical of the promotion of this technique as “training the lips/jaw/mouth to stay” but today I feel that is exactly what’s happening. During the day, it feels comfortable to keep my mouth closed… 😂
    • The tape, and the whole experience, was comfortable, which was a big surprise. It felt like my mouth just had support. It was nice. I’ve been sleeping on my back and wondering how on earth anyone could keep their mouth closed during the night… It was a great sleep.
    I’m excited to see how this progresses.

    This is all so fascinating. Just started your book this morning James, thanks for bringing education to this little known topic. I have a deviated septum I've been struggling with for a while, scheduled for Septoplasty Nov 1st. I've already been experimenting with tape the past week and am noticing a difference (Thank the Hostage tape ads for bringing awareness). It's the craziest thing, when I sleep with my mouth open, I get congested GUARANTEED. Every single morning without fail and it's bad. When I've been taping mouth shut, I'm not waking up congested any longer. I'm very excited for the future and hoping I can finally remedy my struggles once and for all. The thing I am noticing is that while the excess mucus in the morning is gone, my turbinates still seem a bit swollen. They normally chill out once I get hydrated and a bit of exercise in (assuming the change in blood pressure is what causes the actual relief). I'm hoping they get used to this new change with time.
    Here is my timeline through hell and my plan for a hopeful recovery.
    - Had a root canal 5 years ago (you'll see why I mention this below)
    -Been struggling with major nose issues for about 5 years. I always thought it was pet allergies so I never did anything about it, figured it was normal and the sacrifice for having a house full of cats/dogs.
    -Got to the point my nose was getting so raw inside that the hole kept healing smaller and smaller shut! It was crazy. With a flashlight, I could see the hole on left was tiny compared to right hole.
    - Went to ENT for first time ever, had no idea what an ENT even was. He told me my left nostril was blocked about 70% from a deviated septum. Had no idea I even had a deviated septum.
    - Here is the real kicker though. He discovered an abscess above the root canal from 5 years ago. He swears that this extra space is causing me to continually get sinus infections which is what is causing all the excess mucus.
    - We are doing an Endoscopic Sinus surgery with the Septoplasty all in one swoop. I'm nervous, never had surgery before. Wish me luck here!
    - I will be getting tooth fixed as well asap (no pain or anything but he says the scan he performed shows a clear abbess up between sinus cavity at my molar)
    - I plan to start mouth taping regularly and also exercising on a better schedule.
    - The one thing I am getting caught up on, the ENT is also saying I should do turbinate reduction, but I've read a lot of poor stuff about this online. I think I am going to skip this part and see if what I've learned is going to fix me.
    -Lastly I am also reading "How not to die" by Michael Greger which is about food. I have had the worst of the standard American diet my entire life, I plan to also change this.
    Here's to health, I'm so sick of this brain fog and depression which I'm starting to think is all correlated with my above experiences.
    Hopefully anyone else out there struggling to breath can find some damn relief once and for all.

    • @katsuru
      @katsuru 7 місяців тому

      Hey Jesse, today is November 2nd. How did the surgery go?! I am looking forward to good news. Can I connect with you somehow? I also have a deviated septum, I mentioned taping to my doctor and she immediately dismissed it and it bummed me out.
      The more I read into this and do research the more I’m convinced that fixing my breathing at night is more important than ever before.
      Curious to track your journey.

    • @jessemiles5856
      @jessemiles5856 7 місяців тому +1

      @@katsuru So far so good! They knocked me out and got to work yesterday. Surgery went really well according to the Dr. I can't really see anything up there yet when I take off the packing it's just a bloody mess. Trying to keep it clean but it'll probably be a week or so before I can really get up in there and clean it all out as I don't want to mess with the stitches too bad at this point. I've still been mouth taping at least 80% of my nights (prior to the surgery) and plan to continue doing this although the crazy thing is the more I do it, the less I need to it seems, almost seems like my body is naturally starting to learn how to sleep with mouth closed. I'm optimistic about the future although I couldn't say with certainty if this will fix everything or not. They told me I had like 70% blockage on left nostril so I'd like to think it's not possible to get any worse post surgery just better. So far pain is very managable I would put it at like maybe a 3 out of 10. Nose is very delicate but if you just keep it clean with fresh packing snug up against it, you almost don't even notice it - I can eat normal foods and am up on my feet like nothing. I could probably even return to work this week if I wanted surpringly although I'm going to take it easy a week. Are you able to message me on UA-cam? You can find me on Facebook too if you have any questions not sure how you'd like to connect but by all means let me know how I can help.

    My fitness tracker did say that i recovered better last night than i did the rest of the week, but that doesn't have to be because of the mouth taping as there are many factors that could have caused that.
    I also noticed that i could breathe easier trough my nose during the daytime because i had less mucus.

I have a bite guard but it always ended up in my bed in the morning! I often wake up with very dry throat, head, neck and jaw pain. Am prepared to do anything to sort this, taping, head strap whatever it takes, how can I breathe better through my nose as this basically seems to be the starting point. Am in 🇬🇧

    Could mouth breathing, over a lifetime of 80 years, be a factor in developing spasmodic dysphonia. My husband has this disorder--to me it makes perhaps some sense that the dehydration which can occur in the wind pipe, etc. could easily dry out the vocal cords and perhaps cause this disfunction. It would be greatly appreciated if you could give me some information in this regard. Thanks so much.

    So I have a question which I can’t really tell if it was answered or not. Do you mouth tape to train your mouth to close? Or do you do it to keep your mouth closed? Like, “training” implies to me that you will eventually be able to sleep with your mouth closed without using tape. But it seems like everyone who starts it never stops it. So then it wouldn’t be training, it would just be manually holding it closed for you. So I guess my question would be can you ever stop doing it and still continue to nose breath? Or is it a method that only works as long as you keep doing it?

      I think I may need to keep doing it forever, but by training it shut at night, the mouth and tongue are much more likely to stay closed during the day, and promote nose breathing in the day too.

    for some reason ive had a blocked nose on one side, almost constantly, for aobut a year and a half now, which saline spray didnt fix. i also constantly woke up with a dry mouth. I have no idea why it started but it's so frustrating, and a few months ago i discovered i was sleeping with my mouth open and i catch myself doing it almost every night. idk if my blocked nose started bc of this or vice versa, but im gonna try mouth taping now.

    Does this help with Oxygen dropping at night while you sleep? I got on Oxygen instead of a CPAP because my o2 was dropping as low as 75 (but i had pneumonia n Didn't know it).. now.. it drops less with oxygen (down to about 86-89% o2) 1-3 times a night. That's a lot better than 15-20 times a night. Im wondering about taping n Still using Oxygen first night or so and then trying a night without it. I can track it with my o2 Ring i wear to bed. Any Suggestions? Im 61... need to lose some weight n Need energy. o2 has Really helped a lot with The Brain fog n Exhaustion i suffered from for 20 yrs . Thanks!

    why does the tape come off on some? it was mentioned at the beginning but not addressed later

    • @thebreathingman
      @thebreathingman 4 роки тому +7

      From the Buteyko Discovery point of view the tape will come off on some people due to them generally breathing too much. Moving from mouth breathing to nose breathing means you will be "breathing less" because of the smaller space in the nostrils compared to the mouth. It took me 3 weeks to be able to keep the tape on all night, until my body readjusted to a lower level of breathing and created a new "normal" higher level of tolerance of Carbon Dioxide. A new "normal" higher level of tolerance of Carbon Dioxide means you will automatically generally be "breath less". Mouth tapping is a "Breathe Reducing Factor"!

    • @theycallmedip
      @theycallmedip 3 роки тому +1

      Because mouth breathing as well as shallow/quick breathing results in an innificient use of our respiratory system. It's like having a quick heartbeat all the time(still getting the blood through the body but stressing out the system more than it needs to). With slower deeper breathing your actually getting more out of your breathing while doing less breathing at the same time. This is my best understanding anyways.

      From what James Nestor has said, our problems stem from our mouths getting smaller over time. It apparently started around 400 years ago with the introduction of industrialized processed foods and lack of chewing. It caused our mouths to shrink over time. That is why so much of the population have crooked teeth.
      Check out some of James Nestors other videos and interviews. He explains it in detail in many of them.
      A UA-cam search for “high intensity health James Nestor” should bring up a long video that should explain it in detail.
