  • Span Loop Knot - Quick Easy Loop in a Rope - No Jam Loop Knot - How to Tie the Span Loop
    The Span Loop Knot is a very quick and easy knot to tie on a bight of a rope. In Ashley's Book of Knots, there is a whole section on loop knots. Ashley's goes on to say that the Span Loop is exceptionally easy to untie. He then goes on to say that the Span Loop Knot is also the strongest and most secure of the series. (Single Loop Knots).
    Even though the security of the Span Loop is mentioned as being very secure, I would not think that this would replace the Alpine Butterfly Loop. I think that the downside with the Span Loop is that it is too easy to undo?

      What type of rope do you use to make a loop you are going to use to do climbing with?

      @@studinthemaking I can only advise that if you are using rope for climbing, then seek professional advice. I find that staying on the ground is much safer.

    I use this loop interchangeably with the Alpine Butterfly to create Trucker's Hitches... I find them both infinitely easier to undo after extreme loading instead of using a simple Slip Knot.

    I’ll have to remember that one, I have a good use for it, I have my dingy on a clothesline arrangement and am always tying a loop in the painter at different locations to slip over a piece of propeller shaft set in a rock.

    Very nice. This is a knot I have been struggling with. Mine always closes on me. I used to use it for a high line to tie my horses on for the night while in the mountains, but now I use it mostly to add a Dutchman so that I can tighten the rope and make my loads secure. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  5 років тому

      Well you have now peaked my interest, what is a Dutchman?

    • @harrymann3039
      @harrymann3039 5 років тому

      @@KnottingKnots I have always known this hitch as a Dutchman, but an internet search also shows it as a Truckers Hitch. I am sure there are many other names for it. It is basically a substitute for a pulley that allows one to tighten a rope to secure a load or for any other reason one needs to tighten a rope. See this picture (ic.pics.livejournal.com/and_cesbo/24618302/3143/3143_original.gif). As you can see, the loop is not as good as the one you showed. BTW, I think you meant piqued. :)

      The Span Loop is magical in a trucker hitch. With all the videos about trucker hitches on UA-cam, I am surprised I have never seen one person use a Span Loop. Not only is the Span Loop easy to tie and untie, but also it does not leave an ugly ear hanging out after the trucker hitch is all tied up.

  • @Perktube1

    4:10 - your bight just became a loop. Important to note that.

  • @eyeconspiracy

    Is it still secure & easy to untie if I put a heavy load on each tag end? I would like to keep a loop in my dinghy painter for occasional use, but 95% of the time, the load will be on the bitter ends, not the loop.

    • @jakemccoy
      @jakemccoy 8 місяців тому

      I don't know about your application, but the Span Loop is magical in a trucker hitch where everything on the loop is loaded evenly.

    I apologize for my random comment, but I know nothing about knots, could you help me? I want to tie a ribbon around my cat’s neck, but I need a knot that will allow him to break free if the collar becomes stuck somewhere (I’ve heard of cats that have died because they couldn’t get free). Is there a knot you recommend? You can just tell me the name and I’ll google how to do it

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  4 роки тому +1

      I do not think there is any knot suitable. I would have thought that your best bet would be to us a "breakaway clip" they can be magnetic or friction fit/lock.

      make a loop at one end of the string "preferably a very circular one honda knot " measure the cats neck and make a round stopper knot "ashley stopper " at the other end then fit the stopper end in the loop the cats neck shoud keep it from breaking free but if hes stuck itll crumble also one way is to tie the ribbon to a small fragile thinner ribben so that when stuck the thinn ribben breaks and ur cat isnt stuck

    • @jakemccoy
      @jakemccoy 8 місяців тому

      There are plastic fasteners you can buy that will disconnect after a few pounds of pressure or whatever. That's what you need for consistent results. This is also doable with a slip knot in paracord, but you need ample experience tying knots to pull it off. And I would have to show you in a video.

    Does knowing how to tie so many knots make it difficult to choose the right one for a job?

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  3 роки тому +1

      I have a set of knots that are my go to knots. Sometimes, when I learn one that I really like, it will replace one. But yes, sometimes you can think for so long about which knot to use, by which time someone else has done the job for you with a granny knot!!!
