I have a 750 gig WD black drive I bought in 2010, it's been in use every day since I bought it and still works flawlessly. Every time I upgrade I just move it to the new pc.
Good review. Found the same thing occur with mine. Cheaper, lasts longer, viable; especially for "single player" games where maximum load isn't totally needed.
I went to buy a Hard Drive today and was stumped between a Western Digital Pro Red 10TB NAS Hard Drive ($320) or a Western Digital Black Gaming 6TB Hard Drive ($315) The specs appeared to be the exact same apart from the storage size. I asked the PC Retail store cashier and he recommended getting the Gaming Hard Drive. Saying that I wouldn't need a NAS Hard Drive since it's for NAS systems. He said overall the Gaming Hard Drive would be better for me. I mainly needed the new hard drive to store Video Editing Projects and Asset Files. While also needing another storage dump for games.
During COVID , when everything was expensive AF. I couldn't afford a 2tb or 4tb m.2 because they were all like $220+ even for the crappy brands. I was able to cop a 4tb western digital black for like $90. Honestly it doesn't download as fast as an m.2 but in 3 years I can't remember a time I had an issue. I wouldn't use it for a really demanding game like GTA 6 but almost all the games I've played have been taken off and installed on my western digital black hard drive at some point and I haven't had any problems. Great purchase
I have had a lot of good experiences with Western Digital mechanical hard drives, especially Western Digital Black. I don't recommend SSDs because of their limited write capacity. They're faster, but they won't last. Stay away from Seagate hard drives, every Seagate hard drive I've owned has died on me within 3-5 years.

Same 4Tb drive for 120 euro Even if i dont use it as a main drive i feel safe knowing i have 4 extra tb to just trash dump any games or files i couldve found space for before on my 500gb laptop ssd
I just bought the WD Black HDD 2TB specifically for game/app installs. It's my understanding that games are designed to run off mostly RAM during game-play? That's why a HDD wasn't a second thought... especially a WD Black HDD. I have 2 WD Black 500GB HDDs that have been running good 24/7 for 8+ years. @@greaterthanpie Wow. I was expecting it to be older given the performance numbers. I use Linux Mint and was wondering what the name of your test software is. It might be in the repository. I just ordered a 10 TB Black drive😁. If it survives Amazon shipping I'll let you know how it checks out.
5:48 read and write speed depends on location of the file and where it is writing to, if inner part is 250mbs, the outer part be 150 mps, and middle part around 200. for gaming just cut the drive in half, inner disk for gaming and outer disk for storage
Don't ever record gameplay or play games on SSD, I've had two SSD'S die quickly. The reason is because of the SSD limited write capacity, it can only take so many writes before it becomes read only. Instead buy a WD Gold or WD Purple, as they can handle more than the standard HDD, I called WD today, even they agree with me!
I’ve been playing games on my external Sandisk ssd. I’ve used it across PC, Laptop and Ps5 and it has been the only tech product I’ve owned that hasn’t caused me any problems for 3 years
aliexpress are real prices of wd black and gold? Because looks legit sellers, they sell all colors of WD IDK.. Is good price or die with a 1tb or 2tb ssd gen 3.
Im getting the WD black 4TB just to download all my games, and keep them on hand. You never know when a game might get pulled for some political crap, and never see it again. LOL
I ran a WD Green 2tb as an OS and gaming drive for 8 years from 2009 to 2017. Only replaced it because the moving arm and bearings went out. It lasted well beyond it's warranty range. I use M.2 NVMES as my boot and main drives, but I wanted a gaming HDD for my very large games. I wanted to keep as much space as possible open on my NVMEs so they last longer and an HDD for long term data and gaming. All are WD Black drives. I have the 4tb version of this. These drives do what they say, the numbers are not a lie, and mine is QUIET!

I have a 700 GB Samsung hard drive from 2008 still running.
black friday new egg special on the WD_Black 6TB Gaming version. $109, Holy crap! If you need a lot of storage this is an incredible price for 6TB!
5400 rpm drives are more for low power, 7200 rpm was the standard for a long time

Exactly. If it's single player, large games, a measly extra 30 seconds of load time is nothing.

How old is the 2TB standard drive?
2TB used to require 5 platters (slow), today it fits on one (much faster).
At thee time it was only a year old

Btw the drive you tested had 64mb cache or was it either 128mb or 256mb cache?
250 I think
