I don't have any children of my own yet but I've been knitting baby things for friends and relatives. If you're knitting for someone else's baby, I think it's important to let the parents decide what exactly they want the gift knit to be instead of springing a surprise on them that ends up becoming an unappreciated liability. Base your choice of materials on the climate of where they live and if they mind high-maintenance knits. Let them choose the type of garment or item they want - some parents might not want clothing and prefer something more long-lasting like a blanket instead. Show them patterns and let them take their pick. Show them yarns you think will be a good fit and ask for their approval. Let them pick the colour(s). Basically, get them involved in the process so you can absolve yourself of any responsibility if they still end up not liking the gift lol

I've always loved crocheting for my doll babies when I was little, I learned at about 4 years old. I started getting really interested in learning to knit at 10-11 years old. I turned 57 this past October and baby items are still my most fat things to make, even though I don't have any children of my own. The only problem I've ever had when making my favorite baby sweater set is knowing which side to place buttons and button holes when the baby's gender is unknown. Over the years, I've increased the number of items included in my layette set baby shower gifts. What was once a just a sweater and bonnet set has grown to include booties, a blanket, "soaker" pants/diaper cover, and baby mitts. I'm thinking of adding a knit teddy bear or bunny too. I've made and included a knit head bow for little girls too. 💜✌️🧶

Sadly, I don't have children of my own, but I've knit TONS of baby knits for friends and relatives. I agree with everything you just said. I would also add that knitted toys make awesome gift knits. They were, by far, the presents that people found the most meaningful and that are still the most cherished. I've knit a lot of Julie Williams' patterns (Little cotton rabbits) and seeing the children holding on to them as they grow is priceless... I just gifted a small girl rabbit two days ago to a first time mom (along with a bonnet and a pair of baby socks) and she was so so thrilled.
I knit my first baby knit sweater for a friend last year, and I definitely regret not going up sizes. The baby outgrew month six sweaters by month two or three. A super cute chunky baby that is fitting size 12 month things at 7 months.
Arthur's little baby noises are so cute! I don't even have any babies in my life to knit for right now, but I sometimes can't resist a super cute pattern anyways! Thanks for your insight, I will definitely keep these things in mind in the future :)

Great advice! Thank you ❤ I am expecting a baby girl in June. So far I have knitted two newborn size bonnets/hats, two pairs of little socks and one 1-2 months cardigan. All other items are for 6-9 months (for colder seasons). I started my baby knitting marathon with bigger items but then thought: I NEED something super small and super cute hah. Baby items are really flying of the needles. I am excited to knit for a 1 year old and older as then children grow a little slower (hopefully heh). My grandma also knitted a suit for 1-3 months baby, I am very grateful for that ❤
Such Great tips, I agree with all of them! I wasn’t a knitter with my first and now, thinking about having a second one, I’ve been reflecting a lot on baby wardrobe. I bought a lot of onesies for the first few months and while I loved those as PJs, I think pants and sweaters are way easier to change (and cuter, imo). And if one piece gets messed up, you don’t have to wash an entire outfit. Also I think you can absolutely get away with oversized pants and sweaters by folding up the cuffs. Oversized onesies don’t really work.
I'm in a baby knits marathon for baby number four who is due in just a few weeks. This is only my second baby I've knit for and I'm excited for them to wear some different patterns and fibers since my last baby was born at the beginning of winter and this baby will be born in spring 😊

I love love love knitting for expecting parents! I usually knit 6-9 or 9-12 month just in case the baby grows quickly. Also for people on a budget: Drops baby merino is an amazing super wash yarn that I use for basically every baby (and also a dupe for Sandnes Sunday 🤫). I usually order it at around 3,50€, which is 5€ cheaper than Sandes, which makes the knits extremely affordable!
Only con for Drops baby merino is you can't really hold it double for any petiteknit patterns, if the needle size is below 5mm. Its just too stiff or tight. Unlike Sandnes Sunday. But there will be similar yarns you could use for that instead, or just use DK weight.

Good advice...I have a lot of grandies and greats. There is always knitting for someone. Very true...babies change sooo fast that 2 months ahead is about all you dare venture .

Loved this and tiny baby A’s little noises 🤍😂 My son is almost 8yrs old and my baby fever is BAD so I’ve been itching to cast on some tiny knits to hoard for the future!
For me my baby was born much smaller than we expected. Had to go out buy preemie stuff for a 5lb 13oz baby . And she was in them for probably 2 months which looking back on didn't seem like a long time but back then it was. And she is now 2.5 years old and only weights 25lbs and 33in tall so anything I make I have to down size but make it longer so it's skinny but long enough.
I loved watching this! I cannot wait to knit all of the baby items when my partner and I start trying for a little one - but as a 6'2" (187cm) lady with a partner the same height, I suspect that newborn-sized knits will probably be too small even on our brand-new newborn. I'm glad to know what fibers to look for and what garments you have found the most useful in Arthur's first half-year.
Thanks for all the advice. So far no baby yet, but I'm knitting a bit of a hope collection for myself and for a friend who recently suffered her third miscarriage. I guess it's different for everyone and different every day, but at least for me right now, knitting and holding baby items helps me stay hopeful that they will be used someday 💝
Our baby will be born mid winter so I’m knitting all newborn sizes because Texas winters are cold but quick, by the time baby can wear the pieces again they won’t fit into them

I find making baby blankets are fun and always appreciated. There are some lovely Chevron patterns on Ravelry that look great in the pram or cot

Hello, I find that when I knit something for my baby, the garnment last sooo much more than when I buy it.😂
Definitely cardigans are easier for dressing babies, especially after they are a few months old.
I don’t have kids of my own, nor do I want any.
But, I wouldn’t mind knitting for someone if they have a child.
My best advice is don’t knit anything white.
