When you see a guy with dad new balance shoes, you know he's gonna do a good job.
Thanks for the “hard-soled shoes” advice!
Seriously! I didn’t realize the damage I did to my heel with the soft shoes. Actually, I think a rubber mallet is the way to go. It took me months to get rid of the bruising pain in my heel! Glad it helped. -Tom
Nice one Tom. Thank you. In Flo as well.
Great tutorial and tips Tom!
Enjoy the South and glad you enjoy the knife.
P.S. Note to viewers: At around 7:04 this is how most people look to Tom.
Great info and tunes!
Great Job Tom!!
I'm almost embarrassed you watched that, Jeff!! My skill level is usually tapped out at holding the flashlight for someone like you.
Nice Job!
Thanks for posting this!
You're welcome, Richard. I love the floor and so does everyone that sees it.
Now all you need is a pair of tap-dancing shoes and Doris Day music, right? (The one thing I'm not too keen about with these type of floors - how they sound.) That said, I've got the same Diamond Alloy tiles selected for my floor too. Thanks for the tile cutter link, it's half the cost of RaceDeck's cutter!
Nice job! Great tip about the amazon cutter. I have 18" tiles coming and am not sure how I will cut those yet. The Amazon cutter will be great for the 12" tiles. Thanks for the vid!
That cutter was perfect for the job. I used a circular saw on a project in the past. Never again!!
@@evolutionaryTom Good call Tom! I ordered a 20" cutter from Amazon ($247) and it worked amazingly well for the 18" tiles. No mess. I tried a jigsaw and yeah what a mess! The shear makes such clean edges. I'm gonna probably sell the smaller 13" cutter I have and keep the 20".
@@spacep0d do you have a link from Amazon to but that cutter. I’m not handy at all and plan on doing this in a couple weeks ! Wish me luck
Thanks for the tutorial. Regarding the cutting tool, I am thinking it could be, for one time project like this, better to rent a cutting tool from HD for 32 dollors a day.
Very nice, Tom! Great job. Love that black beauty sitting in your driveway 😎
the diamond-plate look is always great. everything that's parked in your garage will now look 10 times better!
i did my garage in a 2-part epoxy with flecks, but this definitely beats it.
one question: how does it sound when you walk on it...solid? hollow?
hope you're enjoying your new digs down there. thanks, Tom
LOL, you are right, CP. It does make stuff look like a million bucks! It has a unique sound to it for sure. Not quite like you're walking on something hollow but you know you are walking on a platform of some kind. Enjoying learning about this place. I'm sure I'll be in honeymoon mode for quite some time.
It’s called a laminate flooring shear. Hope you received free shipping we did our garage and we ask an received free shipping to Southwest Florida. We uses 2 different colors for the border instead on doing it all in a single color
Great ji
Can you send a link or info on the garage journal? I want to order one and see if I can’t get that discount as well. Thanks for the info!
Me thinks you need a rubber mallet. I really like the finished look.
Really Tom? "Athletic" extra large. You haven't changed bro. Glad to see y'all made it to Fla.
It's hard to find someone who can get that Athletic Cut just right, Justin! LOL
Put the blade in backwards and the circular saw works. The same thing you would do for vinyl siding!
Dammit Tud, I should have met you before 2012 when I did that. I've never heard that! Thanks for the lesson. I enjoy learning from everyone on here. -Tom
Tom, I just put my floor down and left an expansion gap around the side walls and back wall, however I started up against the garage door track. Should I have left a half inch gap against the door track too? If so, I may have to notch it with a jig saw.
I did. The whole thing expands together with the heat so anything that is within a half inch of it could be an obstacle during expansion. Hope that helps! -Tom
Laying out the majority of the floor is very simple anyone can do it but when it comes to making the cuts is where the fun starts if one is not good at making the cuts have somebody else who knows what they're doing do it. To do a two car standard garage it's going to cost you over $1,000 measure 10 times and cut once lol
May I know how much does it cost for the plastic tiles to cover the area of your garage? I have 2 car garage like 12x16
Thanks
Carlos. At the time, in 2021, it was just a hair under $2,000. I was able to take advantage of their veteran discount. Go and join The Garage Journal forum for free. Members of that forum can also get a great discount directory from the company. They could then and I'm assuming they still can. Hope that helps.
Do you like to keep your garage tidy or cluttered like so many I've seen over the years?
I lean heavy towards the tidy side, Pedro. As soon as my cabinets and racking arrive from our former house, I'll get it whipped into shape! I've got just enough OCD to be healthy.
How does the water evaporate? What about spills like oil? Does is magically disappear from underneath the tiles? What if I drop a hammer? Will it crack the tile?
I'm no scientist but these are my observations. The water evaporates because it's not air tight. I took up my previous floor at my old house and there were zero issues. And Snow was on that floor when I pulled the snowblower in, ATV, etc. The seams are tight but I think any fluid can work its way in. So for oil, you'd need to just clean that spill up as soon as you notice it. I don't think it would hurt the floor underneath, other than a regular oil stain, if it did get under the tiles. And no, it won't crack if you drop a hammer on it. It has some flex in it and the tiles are not brittle at all. Hope that helps. -Tom
Do not understand the goal with a concrete floor. You placed plain deck on a plain floor ?
Wrong!!! Racedrck instructions specifically state to start in the front corner. You cannot use the Racedeck transition entry/end pieces if you lay the tiles in this method.
Evidently you can. This install went great. I'm very happy with Racedeck's product and that's two garage installs for me know.
No one reads the description, so here's the Amazon link to the tile: linktw.in/FzqNlN and to the tile cutting tool: linktw.in/VKwJxY
