Dancing Without Sound, Performing Without Sight
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Founded in 1987, the China Disabled People’s Performing Arts Troupe enact some of the most enchanting and intricately choreographed dances, plays and operas you will ever experience. Without hearing, dancers use sound vibrations to interpret the beat; without sight, musicians use breathing patterns to keep pace. Together, they perform the “Thousand-hand Bodhisattva,” one of the most challenging pieces for the troupe to learn. Today, they’ve taken their talents around the world, performing in over 100 countries.

Im glad they didnt narrate over their sign language, it kind of gives them their own voice even through the silence
Fawn Frauscht I appreciated that too.

But now blind or people with bad sight have no clue what she's saying.
loved it
This falls into a common problem though of not actually showing the sign. In a lot of productions using sign, the camera cuts off the hands and you can't see what they are saying. In this one specifically, they cut to different images and use subtitles. And as someone else said, it doesn't allow blind people to understand what is being said.
They use the vibrations in the earth to learn the dance?

The first thing my music teacher taught me when I started my instrument is to play without sight. "when you lose one sense, you gain another" he said.
When you close your eyes a sense get stronger.
Wow what a wise word from ur teacher
that is why meditation is done eyes shut. you open your mind by shutting down your eye.
Same, I learned ukelele with my eyes closed, now I can really connect with the music. It's so cool!
@tracy Star thank you for your contribution, i guess
The dancers somehow reminds me of Earth Benders from Avatar! The way they interpret the beat of the drum through the ground, along with the handmovements hehehe!
@ふわふわふわふわ I thought the same thing 😂😂
Exactly!! 🌚🥔🌚

basically, yeah
If anyone is wondering, this dance is based on the Chinese goddess of compassion "Guanyin". According to folk tale, when she was a mortal, she used to be a princess, her father got a severe illness but she managed to save him by sacrificing her own hands and eyes.
&The Buddha's heart was deeply moved by the extreme love she had for her father that he gifted her thousands of eyes and thousands of hands to help all living beings that are suffering in the world.

So informative
Some people can't pronounce properly.
Meg Shankar I’m Tibetan Chinese and when he said that I CRINGED lol.
Voice actors are not researchers or linguists, he read Bodhisattva in English and simply pronounced it as an English-speaker would naturally do... It's not like the subject here is Sanskrit, Buddhism or even Guanyin...
Plus, to be consistent with Chinese Bouddhism and faithful to the pronunciation in a Chinese context (they're in Beijing), he would have said it in Mandarin rather than in Sanskrit, wouldn't he ? =) [=pútísàduǒ, or simply púsà].
Meg Shankar Yes he has a English accident.. so unusually isn’t it? God.

This is incredible. Sad to think that the blind cannot see the dancers and the deaf cannot hear the musicians, yet they work beautifully together.
They came to our elementary when I was in grade 3 and performed in front of our entire 3000+ students. it was a breathtaking experience.
Mintchocoable you have 3000+ students in ur elementary?? Holy shit where do u live? I had like 42
Beijing. I went there for three years. It was one of the most prestigious elementary school in China where most of my fellow classmates were diplomats, higher officials in government and scientists' kids. One of the kids a grade below me was the son of the first astronaut to be sent into space by the Chinese space program. Established in 1949, same year as the People's Republic of China, you can't enroll in that school simply with just money, you need connections to get in. The average tuition was around 32k USD per year (two semesters) in the 2000s. Our principal at the time was the wife of a military chief, she retired in her 70s and our new principal had an education Ph.D. from Harvard. Our school was HUGE that grade 1 and 2 each had 12 classes with 60 students per class and grade 3-6 had 8 classes with the similar amount of students. We had to open another school at another location to deal with over-population since its located in the heart of Beijing. Oh fun fact, we actually got to celebrate our 60th anniversary of school at the Great Hall of the People (state building where government officials use it to hold legislative and ceremonial activities like foreign relation events. )
Mintchocoable
So 😎
Indigoblue Enthustiast do you actually have only 42 people in your whole school??

BelleJaneKidaBarbieZeldaSamus not really...I was in an acapella choir for a few years and I can tell you that without a doubt the easiest way to keep in time with the group is to synchronize your breathing. When you can’t see, your other senses become more refined, so it’s entirely within the realm of possibility for a group of blind musicians to keep time through listening to each other breathe

My father was deaf and was an amazing dancer. Not professionally, but he could tear it up! He loved music, he could feel it through his feet. Thank you for letting us see this video, it meant a lot to me.
I had a friend in ballet who was deaf and during recitals our teacher would be at the back of the theater beating glow in the dark drumsticks so that my friend could follow the beat. She also greatly enjoyed tap since she could "hear" the tapping from everyone's shoes.
Aww that's so sweet
That's so wholesome! I love how your teacher went above and beyond.
Thats a nice teacher!
love their passion and glad they were given the opportunity to perform!
C Hushgege probably that not many would take in people with disabilities (I’ve seen it a lot 🙃)...so they’re happy that they have a place for them to showcase their talents and dreams

You have an amazing dance playlist? That's cool. Have you heard of Full Radius Dance Company? Many of their performers are physically disabled:
ua-cam.com/video/K5UxFX0PSvw/v-deo.html
What I really love about them is that they don't treat the disability as something that has to be worked around in order to perform the dance; rather, they incorporate it into the dance in some really beautiful ways. What I remember most from when I saw them is how they used the wheelchairs into the dance. The result was something different than I'd ever seen before.
Them: *Dances Beautifully*
Me with my team in history: So do you like bread
Don't complain; everyone can do something special. - this is what they teach us all.
Apparently I'm not everyone
Why is it that this video is partially about deaf people and yet have no captioning? Sincerely, a deaf guy

Thank you, I really appreciate that. This is just great.
Instead of asking for help and being miserable, they decided to improve themselves.
This should be inspiration not only for disabled but anyone.
Thank for sharing.
I agree that it’s an inspiration, but I don’t think it’s right to imply that asking for help is a negative thing. Some people should get help when they need it. It’s not always healthy to try to do everything by yourself. Neither is completely a better option, since it’s really a case-by-case thing, but the wording of your comment just put me off.
They still ask for and need help. Help for disabled people is just fair accommodations, like when the dance teacher helped them work on rhythm, when the music teachers direct the blind musicians to their chairs, etc. they are doing something great, but disabled people aren’t bad or wrong for asking for help.
Participating in this program IS them asking for help...

Okay that makes me so happy and impressed. I'm Brazilian and two years ago I started learning our sign language, Libras, and met a lot of wonderful people, translators and deaf, and heared a lot of stories. I learned that they're very talkative (oh my God, they speak A LOT non-stop) and share a lot of stories where their conditions made the situation difficult, but they tried their best. Seeing this kind of thing, I can just think that they're winners. Their condition did not stop them. They tried, they learned, they conquered. I'm so happy right now!
I feel so lucky to be born in China. It makes me so lucky that my people are so talented. I really do feel blessed.
when you have a population that big you are bound to have significantly more talented people

"One would think that a performance this difficult and precise, would require all five senses"
Taste and smell: "I serve no purpose"
This is beauty, both inside and outside
Being able to understand what they’re saying without the captions is just... the best feeling ever
It's really sad that they are interviewing blind people but decided to directly encode the captions into the video where a blind person's screen reader can't pick it up. Least they could have done is added all of it to the description, but they didn't.
My school lets students dance this too every year an event and in order to join one of my chinese teachers choose students randomly from any class but sadly I’m not one of them
They can feel music from their feet. Goosebumbs 😨😨😨😨 its something like anime and super coool
Theres something so beautiful that so many people with so many different experiences can join together to create something so ethereal
Woaaah my school invited them and we actually got to see them live yay
And here my teammates and I are fighting claiming one of us has more work than the other.
They visited and performed in my country last year. I swear my husband and I were smile crying the whole time. It was and has been the most beautifil thing I've ever seen.
That’s a really beautiful and talented dance. ❤️😱
I just realized the orchestra and the dancers can't communicate whatsoever, cuz the dancers communicate through signs and the orchestra can't read them. That makes them even more fascinating
I’d love to be able to see them perform merely because of the art forms. I watched the bodhisattva dance and it was breathtaking. I was a dancer all through school. I also played instruments and sang. These arts require the souls of the performers to deeply love their art form. Knowing they’re disabled is interesting to me.
