McGuirk tried desperately to hold on after split with Watts, but to no avail. It's obvious from watching this that Watts was the one who had the vision of what wrestling needed to be. Mid South was booming and their TV made this look tame.

great to see ALI BEY WIN and squash his opponent while HE is the topic of announcer (Ross) conversation for a change. Every other match ive seen him in were good to GREAT ones, the man knew what he was doing and looked good and believeable doin it

LOVVVVVE the jobber squashes!...best kind of wrestling matches for me, where it's completely one-sided, the humiliation factor of it makes it extremely satisfying to watch....

Wow, this is before Bill Watts bought ol' Leroy out. My favorite Leroy story is him wanting Jim Ross to drive him to where Ted DiBiase was so he could shoot him for dating his daughter Mike (later WWF ring announcer).

I love seeing these shows (thanks KrisZ), but I can’t imagine it was very difficult for Watts to buy out McGuirk. Based on the few shows that have been posted so far, his roster would be lucky to make the bottom of the card in most other territories. (With the obvious exception of Snuka.). The real highlight is Ross. I had no idea he was announcing anywhere prior to Mid-South.

My understanding was Watts bought part of McGuirks territory which he renamed Midsouth, McGuirk continued operating for a while but ended up selling the rest of it to Watts

My first live wrestling event was Championship Wrestling at the National Guard Armory in Oklahoma City in March of '82. The main event was Ric Flair vs. Paul Jones. I'd give anything to find the program to that event.

20:30... I've always liked when a heel would refuse to stop punishing his opponent after he'd already won...always made me think the heel wasn't quite "finished" yet, and needed just a littttttle bit longer to feel COMPLETELY satisfied, that extra bit of humiliation to finish the "job"...

In the early 70's leroy mcguirk and bill watts were partners. Monroe louisiana was part of the territory. I saw great matches on local television. "Championship Wrestling". Also saw matches in person at the monroe civic center. I was around 10 years old. Outlaw Don Bass and his "brother" Ron Bass were a good tag team, managed by "Ma" Bass. Akbar, Doctor X, Grizzly Smith, Rip and Randy Tyler, Tank Morgan, Cyclone Negro, Arman Hussein, were all great. I was a kid but thoroughly enjoyed it !

@@loudenkliehr3633 True. In a lot of the NWA territories back then, top-rope moves were barred (the exact rule was both feet could not be on the top rope, which is why Dusty Rhodes could use a flying press to beat Harley Race for his second NWA title, as he had just one foot on the top rope), so Jimmy wore boots to be more of a power wrestler (as he was a regular on the body-builder circuit in the late 70s-early 80s along with Tony Atlas and Ricky Steamboat).
Snuka and Terry Gordy were a tough team in Georgia.

In late 1981, the name of the promotion was in the process of changing as they were trying to decide between Tri-State, Midwest, and Mid-American. It doesn't help that all a jet-lagged Snuka has to work with is a banner that simply reads "Championship Wrestling".

    • @kelsonlopez1583

Cocaine damaged his brain. The murder was more of a drug-fueled accident than anything premeditated from all the accounts I have read. From several accounts what happened was that Snuka was in his hotel room with Nancy who was his mistress, Snuka was married with children at the time. Snuka and Nancy had a cocaine fueled night and they ran out. Snuka who was an illiterate to begin with, was crazy with cocaine and wanted more. Nancy went out couldn't find any and Snuka took it out on her. He knocked her around and she hit her head. Yes she died but this wasnt a Bruiser Brody-Jose Gonzalez type of premeditated murder. This was more a tale of cocaine addiction than mean-spirited hate-filled murder.
