I watched Polenzani sing it live on Saturday, Jan 27, so just 11 days after this video was posted. It was great.
I mean, this is fine, but the difference between that and this was night and day. It was, honestly, one of the greatest performance moments I have ever witnessed. There was a brief moment of silence at the end of the aria, and then the audience went wild, and, in my opinion, that applause was completely deserved.
For all those describing his voice as "small" and "nasally" let me just say, that was not at all my experience in the house. His voice was amazingly rich and expressive, clearly audible (even during the softest pianissimo) from the center balcony, and, ultimately, just gorgeous.
Absolutely on point. I experienced the same when I saw him sing this at the MET last year. He was magnificent.. The audience was electrified.
Quite agree with you. I often recollect this performance. It was superb.
I liked but never care much for Polenzani until I heard him live at the MET. The voice is much bigger than it seems and he has a lot of colors in his voice. The phrasing is a lesson of good taste.
@@Michael-mh4vr I've heard him several times. You can hear him very well up in the family circle at the MET.
I've listened to so many operas singers' performance of this song, including Pavarotti of course, and for me this one is by far the best. You can really tell the singer gets what the song is about. It’s not just about hitting the right notes, which he does amazingly, it’s about feeling the song, living it. And he does that so well it gives me goosebumps.
The more I listen to Polenzani the more I understand why I place him so high in my opera fave singers.
Bravisimo caro Polenzani!
Beautiful! Brought tears to my eyes.
Magnifique ! Quelle émotion ! Merci
Que Bella. Moments of Pavorotti's emotional intensity!
Bravo Matthew!
BRAAAAVOOOO!!!
Perfect.
WONDERFUL ARIA
Outstanding.
Marvelous, Matthew! I so look forward to seeing this performance.
el mejor de esta época sin duda. Me encanta como canta este man
Beauty! Congrats.
Wow! thanks for posting this. I've heard many renditions over the years, by Pavarotti, Domingo and others. I'll definitely place this as one of the best (if not the best) performances. Bravissimo!
Subtitles 😁❤ thank you 🙏
Para mí gusto es la mejor interpretación que he escuchado
Una furtiva lagrima" (A furtive tear) is the romanza from act 2, scene 3 of the Italian opera L'elisir d'amore by Gaetano Donizetti. It is sung by Nemorino (tenor) when it appears that the love potion he bought to win the heart of his dream lady, Adina, works. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but she is not interested in a relationship with an innocent, rustic man. To win her heart, Nemorino buys a love potion with all the money he has in his pocket. That love potion is actually a cheap red wine sold by a traveling quack doctor, but when he sees Adina weeping, he knows that she has fallen in love with him, and he is sure that the "elixir" has worked.[1]
A furtive tear
in her eyes appeared:
Those festive young girls
she seemed to envy.
What more need I look for?
What more need I look for?
She loves me! Yes, she loves me,
I see it, I see it.
For a single instant the beats
of her beautiful heart to hear!
My sighs to blend
for a while with her sighs!
Her heartbeats, her heartbeats to hear,
my sighs with hers to merge.
Heavens! One could die!
More I cannot ask, I cannot ask.
Oh, heavens! One could, one could die!
More I cannot ask, I cannot ask.
One could die! One could die of love!
Excellent acting
J'aime beaucoup ce ténor vu dans plusieurs opéras différents !
very great talent tenor world class singer bravo bravo bravo 💙💛🌹🎂🎁🎨🎈👏
🌸🌸🌸 Que bello
Bravo!
Bravo!!
Meraviglioso...........
Rewelacyjnie liryczny!!!!
Bravo Mettue polanzeni!!!!!!!
Viva Donizetti, sempre!!!!
Brilliant! Of course, Pavarotti owns this aria, but Polenzani is my second favorite. Like Pavarotti, he treats the aria gently, like the delicate treasure that it is.
Lmao 😂 Jay Electronica sent me here to inspect this whole scene out👀👁
maravilhoso
Was this recording ever released on DVD?
Супер!!!
Podrían por favor traducirlo al español?
This might be unfair but this aria just makes me miss Pavarotti !
Fevkalade
Vibrato a tad wobbly for my taste, but so lovely otherwise! So clear.
funniest thing i've ever seen
Toneless.
I remember going to see la Boheme at the Royal Opera House, London. I had high expectations, but left the theater before the ending, because I was underwhelmed by the lack of vocal projection. I had heard him in youtube and thought his voice was very pleasant and really liked his musicality, but in the theatre it was non audible. I think his vocal production is very throaty and not fully supported. There is some strange thing happening on the pitch in some parts where he sustains the tone, for example at 0:59
Jake Fratelli brought me here
Why did you cut the instrumental intro to this? There's a beautiful bassoon solo before the vocalist begins.
To be quite frank, this performance is below the Metropolitan Opera.
⁰
Barf
Perfect technique
Voice is a bit small , but he is playing the role of a very young man
Красиво но , не нравится , очень по онанистски
Totally dead behind the eyes, no matter how beautiful or not the sound. Just going through the motions really.
I prefer the goonies version of this song
CALANTE!!! Canta aperto - e pericoloso.
Zzzz
Wobbly and nasal!
I just do not understand! If a violinist has a wide and ugly vibrato, he would never become a star. In opera beauty doesn’t matter anymore, bad and mediocre opera singers get away with things instrumentalists would never get away with!
Плохо.
Расширенный верхний регистр,форсирует,мало головной(горизонтальной растяжки звука)
Für Met ist er zu schwach und die Farbe der Stimme berührt mich gar nicht. Schade
Dont like him
His Voice Is Not suited for this sensitive aria, The best Interpret in this cast Is Juan Diego Flórez 🎵🎵🎵
Голые ноты,вокал...а где душа?
по мне какая то слащавость и голос слабенький + наигранность небольшая будто ,но может и правда только кажется, и душа есть)
Strange that you don't see the 'soul' here. For me, this is one the most soulful renditions of this aria. And he does it all with the voice, not with facial acting.
Sad. Small, nasal, throaty and fluttery. This is opera now. How very sad.
I don't think so. I think what you take for being 'small' is his control of the voice and not going 'large' unnecessarily. You may want to listen to a concert performance of this aria by Lawrence Brownlee, which certainly is produced with a 'large' voice (and beautiful voice, for that matter), but does not have the emotional quality of this rendition.
Canto aperto, gli acuti ballano fastidiosamente, non mi piace affatto.
Notice how relaxed he looks. His singing is so effortless.
Brilliant performance :)
