Darn, TURN OFF THE BACKGROUND MUSIC! It is beyond me why UA-cam content creators think playing background music over their voice is somehow enhancing their videos, it is not, it is distracting and extremely annoying. We came to hear you, not to fight background music. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.

Super narrow fm is superior over Am mode ,what Uniden is lacking is ctcss/dcs sub tones on its cb sets vs president and wouxun cb models for fcc use.
A feature thats almost becoming standard now on European cb radios.
QRM noise free blocking using ctcss or dcs sub tones,Uniden need to add this feature to AM/FM sets.
Uk and Europe have had fm mode a while now.

I find it distressing to hear a professional organisation such as Uniden use a term like AM frequencies when talking about using AM v FM on CB radio. It suggest they are seeing new frequencies when in fact they are seeking to have us use FM in place of AM on the same frequencies.

FM requires more TX power due to having a wider bandwidth than AM. Suggestion request duplex frequencys and ctss tones from the fcc to enable the installation of FM CB Repeaters on 27Mhz CB Radio.

Manufactuers should include CTCSS/DCS as routine for FM mode.
Such, would particularly suit home base and family car setups. Here, you can have CTCSS on, squelch off, volume up and the radio will stay dead quite, UNLESS it receives the tone you've set.
Means not having other unwanted signals and noise breaking squelch at home and thus disturbing home life, you can have a quiter home!.
Bear in mind that CTCSS/DCS is not encryption, so what you broadcast, is readily understood by other operators, you just wont hear them.
Manufacturers could include say a few "memory" slots so you can enter a few channels and assign differing codes to those.
CTCSS should not be used on any recognised "road/highway channel", nor on Channel 09 (09/19), or on the SSB call channels 38 and 35, latter used outside Continental US.

If you read the old CB magazines from the 1960s, quite a few manufacturers had tone squelches available either as accessories or standard equipment. They were popular with the business and industrial users. But as the band became a form of social media the B/I users tired of the constant interference and moved to the FM business radio service.
CTCSS has been used in VHF/UHF ham radio as an interference reduction tool for the past 50 years. It prevents skip signals and intermodulation from opening the repeater. When used in a mobile or portable it prevents microprocessor-produced interference from opening the squelch.
But the usage patterns for CB are vastly different than they were 50 or even 60 years ago. Cell phones have taken over the function of inexpensive communication for families. One could argue that they have taken over the social media function as well. That leaves short-range communication and wannabe ham radio as the primary users.
Transportation will never go FM because of the sheer number of AM radios still in use. The local slag pit will never change because of the short distances involved. They just turn the squelch up to eliminate interference.
With the band opening, I hear a lot of FM coming from south of the border. But American operators have no compelling reasons to move to FM.
Channel 9 was useless due to high-powered Puerto Rican stations since the beginning of the service but the Banana Boys, with their constant high-powered shootout stations, have made channel 9 useless for anything. Nobody monitors the channel anymore, and calling 911 via cellphone is far more reliable. The "emergency channel" designation has long outlived its usefulness.

Yes, CB folks will have to buy a new radio with FM on it. AM does not talk to FM and vice versa so you must have FM transmit and receive also. BTW, don't forget single side band, SSB. For full function radio you'll need all three modes built in.

Going back to the 1960s, CB was supposed to be inexpensive, so AM was chosen over FM. Public safety and commercial services embraced FM and its inherent advantages in the 1950s. CB today is basically a low interest hobby radio service, with transportation needs sprinkled in. Cell phones are doing the job that CB radio was intended to do. My local slag and gravel pit uses channel 1 for yard work, and they use AM only. They don't need FM because they're all less than 1/2 mile away.

Cell phones and the Internet are very fragile things - and someone else is always in control of those forms of communication - We basically have permission to use them
      CB/GMRS/Ham - not so much
All that's needed is power and an antenna
      Prepare accordingly

FM is only good for a few miles unless you have a big Burner. FM CB has been a thing in the UK for decades and it is crap compared to AM for range, which is why a lot of UK truckers have am/fm illegal sets with burners and use them. The UK govt is a terrible at most civil liberties. Stick to AM if you're doing distance and only get FM if you are local all the time. FM is a lot clearer and doesn't suffer interference like am so these are the facts.

Sorry but that's wrong, FM will generally outperform AM on distance with the same output power. We've been using FM legally in the UK for over 40 years, hardly anyone uses AM but people have done extensive testing and in almost every situation, FM will travel further than AM and sound clearer.

    • @Vic-Green
      @Vic-Green 11 місяців тому +4

FM has proven to be more reliable than AM. Also the useful or usable signal comes beyond AM on 10~12 meter band. AM suffers terribly from all kinds of interference and noise, which sometimes makes intelligibility at a distance impossible. FM is much more reliable in that regard.

FM mode is superior to AM, cleaner, easier listening than AM, so is great truck to truck/car etc.
Manufacturers should include CTCSS/DCS for use with FM.
