You may have thought that Silkworm was the last Tecmo game to be reissued on Arcade Archives, but nope, we have another Tecmo game that is definitely not Ganbare Ginkun, but a Puyo Puyo clone released 1995, and this week's Arcade Archive, of course, is Tecmo Stackers (otherwise known as Dero~n Dero Dero in Japan). Think of it as Tecmo's answer to Sega's Puyo Puyo, but with falling blocks that players must match with those of the same color onscreen to clear objects and aim for high scores. The main deviation here, however, is that once you match four of the same exact color, the adjacent balls will also stretch out, potentially leading to further chain reactions. It was ported to the PlayStation in Japan in 1995 and was later localized in 1997 in North America and Europe. A Sega Saturn port of the game was also produced in 1996, but this was only limited to a Japanese release. Why? Why would the game still remain Japanese-only? Stick around as we find out tomorrow here on Arcade Archives.

We haven't seen another arcade boxing game since Punch-Out!! (1984), but here are are with Konami's 1988 release Hard Puncher The Final Round: Chimamire no Eikō (Bloodsoaked Glory). A Konami Arcade Boxer starring lookalikes from Contra's Bill Rizer & Lance Bean (the latter also based on Sylvester Stallone's role as Rocky Balboa) and a CPU opponent based on Red Falcon, said movie's iconic rivals played by Mr. T and Dolph Lundgren, and the KBA Champion himself is A Kid Dynamite. As regional differences go, the JP version was notably different from the overseas release.
For starters, the player's energy isn't constantly drained by merely moving around in the ring, alternate boxer names, different voice samples, and some Easter eggs not included elsewhere. These include the referee wearing a Moai mask from Gradius (time based), a hidden bonus in the "Power" training session and two unlockable circuits (Secret World and Powerful World) via joystick codes at the beginning of a new game. Hard Puncher receives its first home release on Hamster's Arcade Archives for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (August 1, 2024 worldwide + Asia). Fight for Bloodsoaked Glory at the Caravan!

As for the Score Attack and Caravan Mode, Final Round uses separate rankings for the following.
      [ Score Attack ]
      Normal: Normal Mode
Secret World: Ramped up difficulty where the opponents can use super punches at any moment.
Powerful World: One hit decides everything in this form where both fighters can knock each other down in this challenge which makes them into glass cannons.
      [ Caravan Mode ]
Normal and Secret World are the only two variants.
