  • Investigators looking into the deadly August 13, 1985 crash of JAL 123 discover that the cabin’s pressurized air may have caused the plane’s faulty tail fin to rip off, mid flight. Amazingly, the crew were able to keep the 747 flying for around 30 minutes before it crashed.

To this day, Japan still runs their pilots through simulations of this incident, and this day, no one is able to beat Captain Masami Takahama's record for flight time. I'll repeat that because with all our technology some 40 years later, and everything we have learned about aviation, no one can top this absolute beast of a man who went into outright ANIME MODE when he felt the Grim Reaper standing behind him, tapping his watch.

I worked for Boeing for 33 years as a structures engineer and you are right a repair to the pressure dome was the cause. But it was the wrong lenth fasteners at the dome splice that cause the dome to fail. When the dome failed it vented cabin air up into the vertical fin thereby blowing the fin off the airplane. Boeing fixed this by adding a tear strap to the dome and adding structure to preven cabin air from venting into the vertical fin.

This is the testimony of those involved.
I am a former JAL employee. I was working in navigation in 1985, and I remember the situation well.
At that time of the day, after Flight 123 had departed, the RC (Ramp Coordinator) of the next Sapporo Flight 523 suddenly informed us that there would be a slight delay due to transportability (transceiver). KT (passenger department) reopened the check-in to take G/Show (passengers without reservations or changing from a later flight), but the balance tolerance of the 747SR is 13 people, so if the W&B (weight balance) changes. I was thinking about it and paying close attention to the color screen of my Jardax (computer). I wasn't feeling well that day, so I was preparing to handwrite it if it was convenient.
After 523 departed, we suddenly received a message from air traffic control saying that 123 was coming back. The person in charge put out a sound on the speaker and called 123 on C/R (company radio), and after a while it was connected. I checked the status of my communication recorder, and just in case, I turned on my personal English conversation pearl coder.
There was a report from 123 saying, "Position report. We just collided with something. Return to Haneda." At first we were told that we had hit a bird, but as we communicated with air traffic control and 123's communications monitor and C/R, we realized that we had been hit directly by a dangerous flying object.
JA8119 had an earlier flight from Itami to Saipan on that day, so I immediately contacted relevant departments such as Osaka, WFZ (Schedule Control Department), and the flight operations headquarters for the 123HND return in order to arrange the ship. Incharge and the chief contacted KKZ (airport branch manager) and others, but it appears that the normally used TTY (SITA line teletype) has been discontinued.
After that, 123 made contact with a Self-Defense Force aircraft over Yamanashi and was scheduled to land at Yokota, but when it got close to the plane, it gave up and headed towards Nagano-Gunma, where it attempted to make an emergency landing in a field. During the fuel dump, during the re-entry after the first attempt, a dangerous flying object hit the No. 4 engine again and caused it to fall, causing a loss of output and horizontal balance, resulting in the direction and vertical change. After a rapid 180-degree right turn, the aircraft went into an inverted position (FDR: flight recorder) and disappeared completely a few seconds later.
In other words, this is the truth. Pressure bulkheads are not involved at all. The US military won't come out either. From now on, what is currently being sold as CVR (cockpit recording) is fragmented, mostly deleted, masked with noise, and edited. The content differs from the recorded media of each communication that remains in your possession

How it happened. Japan Airlines 123 was a scheduled domestic flight from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (also known as Tokyo International Airport) to Osaka International Airport (also known as Osaka Itami Airport). On August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747-146SR developed mechanical problems 12 minutes after taking off. The plane then crashed into Mount Takamagahara in Gunma Prefecture 32 minutes later, after the pilots tried to control the plane, but failed. 520 people died, and only 4 survived. The crash was caused by incorrect repair after a tailstrike incident, which caused metal fatigue and eventually an in-flight structural failure, in which the whole tail of the plane separated from the plane.
