Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo was interviewed by Vice News, on Tuesday (February 1, 2022), where he set the record straight on a series of misinformation.
We were kept under military rule with the help of both the USA and the UK for about 30 years. During this time we had Jonestown, where foreign criminals were sold 3000 acres of land and murdered nearly 1000 people mainly Guyanese citizens. This is still the highest death rate in a non-war theatre. Then, we had a leading critic of the military government murdered in a car bomb, again with the help of the USA. His name was Dr. Walter Rodney. Dr. Rodney was a great man and up to this day, I cannot think of anyone who stands close to his dynamism and character. We lost about half of our population, including my family who escaped to the UK where were treated as 2nd class citizens even though two uncles fought in WW2 for the liberation of Europe in Holland, and in The Battle of Britain. In the UK I was constantly told that I was from a 'poor country'. Let's get a few things straight. Guyana is the size of the UK and is blessed with Gold, Silver, Diamonds, Rivers, Forests, access to the Atlantic, bordering the giant of South America , Brazil. And, now oil and gas. We are also bless with very talented people who have made a great success of their lives in the face of discrimination and adversity. We were NEVER EVER a poor country. What kept us poor was the collusion of Britain to cripple the newly independent government by backing and arming the opposition. One day we will be an integral part of South America and united with our South American neighbours in joint prosperity and finally abandon centuries of colonialism and slavery.
I agree with you. Our family got out of Guyana right after Vincent Teekah's murder. I was at the Mercy Hospital when they brought him in that faithful night. We knew then that we had to leave as fast because that was the beginning. I was the last one left because I was attending UG, so I left for the USA right after Rodney's death. I don't think I will ever be going back to Guyana.

I am from the 50's and have been in and out of Guyana on a regular basis since 1970. I don't blame you and respect your opinion. But I have a different view. The PNC is a puppet of the British but this time they will remain in opposition for a very long time. It was by design that the British isolated us from our neighbours, but now we are building new roads, bridges and rail links to our South American neighbours. The road contract was won by a Brazilian company and not our former lord and master. I don't believe we can be brought down this time, because we now have a powerful friend in China. And, as you know, we have always had very good relations with the Chinese. The British were in Guyana for about 400 years and during that time not a single university, art gallery, classical music orchestra, opera house, science museum etc. Whereas, in their white colonies these cultural symbols are in abundance. For example, the UK still spends over £1million/day to maintain the Falklands. It was in their interest to keep us in ignorance and an infantile stage of development. Especially from our Natural Resources. Burnham and Granger drained us physiologically, mentally, physically, emotionally and economically. So we had to seek medical treatment and economically sustainable care from abroad. Burnham / Granger and Cabals always force Guyana backwards . So do give us our legally retirement benefits as other countries treat there citizens abroad. Thanks for your honest consideration.
