I'd like to see them add some sort of special textured font which looks like any generic degraded industrial text you'd see painted on a wall. Could be pretty useful for environmental design.
Another point that was missed but I think is important to cover: localization. Your user interface should *never* assume a specific size to contain text, because translations have a tendency to be super long or super short.
loved the joke references to tallarico's mom being proud of him lmao. i always loved the look of Builder ever since it was shown off in the RDC keyotes last year so i'm pretty happy it's now usable on the platform. great vid!
I'm just confused as to why they're letting developers use their branded font if it has such heavy restrictions. The licensing also isn't super clear on if you can use it for your thumbnails and if using said thumbnail or font in off-site promotional material for an on-site asset or experience. This reminds me of the branding change regarding "blocky" Roblox avatars, and I'm still not quite sure if I understand if you're allowed to use that for promotional material either.
They should definitely clarify their policy on that. I'd agree it's not as clearly worded for things like promotional materials. I imagine it's probably going to end up being at Roblox's discretion since there's no good bright line standard for this.
"And if you're using Arial in your UI, /please/ explain yourself." It has hinting and the vast majority of fonts today don't. That is all. Arimo looks SO GREASY and not at all like Arial because, believe it or not, I can perceive the individual pixels on my screen (woohoo 96 DPI). It kind of grew on me after a minute of looking at it, though. Edit: It's actually because Arial is just what I reach for mindlessly because it's familiar. I do prefer hinted/bitmapped fonts from old Microsoft products because I have ClearType turned off (not that it matters on Roblox as there's no toggle for font smoothing)
From my experience, Roblox hints plenty of other fonts. Source Sans notably has some of the clearest hinting of any font (it's pretty much non-optional, given that it's used in Studio UI on desktop). If you're looking for good hinting, try that!
Did you use Montserrat font instead of Gotham in your thumbnail? Your thumbnail says "Roblox is removing this font...". Is Roblox removing Montserrat font now? Does Roblox want to bring back the Gotham font and replace Montserrat? Yes, Roblox is replacing Gotham with Montserrat. I know. (Before you hate on this comment, I'm not hating on this channel.)
I speculate the same licensing issue can be applied as to why roblox has not yet (and probably never will) support native font uploading, but couldn't they just make a metric compatible gotham replacement in collaboration with the same foundry that made builder or will the original foundry get mad again and try to take it down? I'm not really well versed in font licensing and copyright.

How is it fine? I use gotham in all of my projects, also about the Metric-compatibility, You would know that the letter "a" has a difference, as it's a double story A in printed text, but in written text, it's a single story a, like the greek letter "α", and if it's fine, then what font should I use for greek text? Gotham has greek support now my only option is to make my own font which will be impossible without downloading some font making and vector graphics applications
I saw the forum post and went "oh no!" Then I realised I use SourceSansPro and Roboto for pretty much every UI element in my games. So then I went "Anyways..."

I like Gotham more, but whatever.
Do you think David Bazooka's father is proud of his son?
All I know is Tommy Tallarico's mom is very proud of him
Monotype also owns Gotham since they acquired Hoefler&Co a few years ago.
Interesting! I wasn't aware of that - it's certainly merger season in the business world, I suppose.
Very informative video, earned yourself a subscriber
nobody talks about the gotham and montserrat number 4, 7, and letter G difference
-Roblox look like it is bought from Kahoot now-

I use gotham on like all my designs, what would I do?
Honestly, I love the new font! I would even go as far to say it looks better than Gothem.
Now its really gone

FigTree is a decent replacement for Metropolis, I believe.
FigTree still isn't metric-compatible - I would probably argue Montserrat comes closer in my opinion, but really there is no good equivalent.
@@dphfox Fair enough!
Montserrat is very round, cartoony and ugly, especially when bold it's too wide that letters are too close to each other.
EXACTLY
I noticed the font in thumbnail.
I bet Batman is taking this real hard.
That is montserrat in the thumbnail sir
(btw the 4 and Q in montserrat are genuinely ugly)

Literally game breaking
I think Roblox have done the most they can reasonably do without inciting a legal response from Hoefler, if this is truly a font licensing issue.
