This was always the first exhibition game of the season. The defending NFL champions against the college all stars. Can you imagine NFL teams letting their prize draft picks play in a meaningless exhibition game against an NFL team these days?

Wow this is super cool. Too bad they didn't do this anymore. Seeing guys like Walter Peyton, Randy White and other college All-Stars (some of who, like Peyton and White turned out to be exceptionally great players) take on a Pro team before they played an NFL game. I'm guessing the game was very similar to a preseason game, where the starters (at least for the Pro team) don't play for much more than a quarter. It's a shame they don't do this today. It would very cool to see, especially if it happened sometime between the Super Bowl and the Draft instead of after the draft. Sadly the money dominates the game today and guys don't want to risk any with an injury.
It was a preseason game. It was one of the two games that opened the NFL preseason when the defending Super Bowl Champions(NFL Champions pre super bowl days) would play a team of college all stars from the previous season.
Pat McInally broke his leg on the touchdown catch you see him make and that was one of the reasons this series was discontinued. Never see this type of exhibition today. NFL players would not risk an injury as they do not have guaranteed contracts. Yes this was a preseason game. It was one of the opening two games of the preseason. Besides the hall of fame game, the defending Super Bowl champions(or NFL champs before the Super Bowl) played a team of college all stars from the previous season who would be NFL rookies that season. The game slowly became less competitive over time and stopped drawing as well as it used to. In addition NFL teams were becoming more reluctant to let high draft picks play in the game where they may be injured before playing for the NFL team that held there rights. This in addition to higher insurance costs led to the game being discontinued after the 1976 season.
After the draft, lets get all the NFLs top draft picks and have them play against the Steelers and the Steel curtain defense for the hell of it... oh the good old days

The Steelers, like other NFL champs, treated this game as an exhibition. That's why Joe Gilliam and Terry Hanratty saw playing time, among other reserves. For the NFL champs, it was more about avoiding injury in a meaningless game. Had the Steelers been playing at full strength with regular season intensity, this game would have been over in the first quarter.
As was said, the Steelers weren't playing their first team nor were they playing at their best. Make no mistake, the worst NFL team can beat the best college team every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
The college all star game rocked. It messed up the college guys because they reported late to NFL camps and sometimes got injured. The money involved just ended this game. The ultimate embaressment would be to lose to the college guys.
Randy White was considered by many, as the best defensive tackle in the game, during his career. He was definitely the best defensive player in college football, and a true All-Star on the field that night. If you watch the whole game, the Steelers had a terrible time trying to block him that night.
Attacking Religion I'll have you know that Sears offers excellent service for a reasonable price. I thank God everyday for such a great company to be operating in the United States.
The injury that occurs early in this game might have been one the reasons. Free agency was just beginning in pro sports so the players and teams didn't want to take the risk of losing players in an exhibition game when a lot of money was at stake. The series was ended the year after this.
I remember these games..it was like little lambs being offered up for slaughter..lol..this was in the era of6 preseason games..two a day padded practices, two month long training camps, the players worked off season jobs, hence no year round conditioning, the product on the field was way way way more entertaining than the rigged over officiated farce that Goodell, the owners, players and TV networks churn out today..every game has to have the miracle unbelievable finish... gotta churn out those beer and truck commercials..lol...any body paying money to watch modern football college or pro, or even high school is a sucker.
But, the Steelers came alive, after Gilliam stepped in.
Joe was exciting to watch...
The ultimate embaressment would be to lose to the college guys.
i cant beleive they ever did this.....
Was this the last college All star game?
no the next game in 1976 was.
alan smith The 76 game was suspended due to a thunderstorm in Chicago.
here's the ending of that 1976 game you mentioned ebf1957 ua-cam.com/video/W0lkHGKV44U/v-deo.html
john? is there any other footage available from other years of this game? I lived for this game in july.
Walter Payton..... The only true "All-Star" on the field for the College All-Stars :-)
DRock6906 .. Steve Bartkowski was a great QB for Atlanta when they finally got some talent around him!
Randy White was considered by many, as the best defensive tackle in the game, during his career. He was definitely the best defensive player in college football, and a true All-Star on the field that night. If you watch the whole game, the Steelers had a terrible time trying to block him that night.
Russ Francis was a 4 time All-Pro TE for the New England Patriots
Yes to all three of the comments.
Robert Brazille just made the HOF this past year
When Sears was doing good...
Attacking Religion I'll have you know that Sears offers excellent service for a reasonable price. I thank God everyday for such a great company to be operating in the United States.
Malachi Megiddo F God
Sears got shipped overseas. lol
Thinking Clearly thats funny because I was walking my dog today and found an old Sears shopping cart. Lol
rip sweetness rip franco.
How was this footage recorded?
most likely began as reel to reel tape and then transferred to VHS.
John Mongani these games were transferred from beta masters to VHS, but in SLP mode. I'm the source of these games.
how did you get the beta masters?
Wow I never knew the Pros played the college All stars I wonder why they stopped
The injury that occurs early in this game might have been one the reasons. Free agency was just beginning in pro sports so the players and teams didn't want to take the risk of losing players in an exhibition game when a lot of money was at stake. The series was ended the year after this.
I had no idea...
Frank Lewis was truly one of the greatest wide receivers of all time!
I WAS THERE
I watched that game on TV. Thought the all-stars had them.
Back in the day when NFLers had to have part time jobs in the off season
all athletes in every sport had part time jobs back then during the off season because most were making less than $100,000.
That old Steelers run game though
That theme is so groovy. LOL :P
It's a waste of time
We need a Browns vs college all stars
I was at the Game
The All-Stars almost won!
Did anyone catch Terry Bradshaw's 1974 stats? 148 attempts, 67 completions for 785 yards and 7 td's. Yikes!
FYI - All Time NFL 32-11
Team owners had to be sweating bullets watching their first round draft picks line up across players like Greene, Lambert and Blount. Of course this series got nixed for obvious reasons. Btw, I have one of those iron city beer commemorative cans to this day.
Imagine being an offensive college prospect or a draft pick and having to play against Mean Joe Greene in a game that did not matter... yeah.
Sweet White Riddells w/snug lifts.
walta payton----------------------just flyin thru the field====made my day.
