Woodford Central Line Railway Station Memories

  • Trains I've seen and filmed over the years at Woodford Central line station.
    These include the 1960, 1962, 1967, 1986 and 1992 tube stocks.
    A mix of video and still images, the latter being 110 and 35mm films. Video dates from early 1990's and 2010. Still images date from late 1970's and 1987.
    Where they enhance the film and fill in some gaps a few images also come from South Ealing station, and I think one comes from Hainault station too.

    The 1960 tube stock. I was lucky enough to ride on one of the old Standard stock cars when I was a boy, from Hainault to Woodford in July 1979. I remember the interior and the high backed transverse seats the cars have and the sound when running between stations. It is a shame they were scrapped in 1983 been replaced by a 1938 trailer. The 60TS motors sounded like the District line CO/CP stock trains. I do miss these old trains.

    Thanks Alex, Every 1967 tube stock Victoria Line train was tested on this line before use on the Victoria Line. This was to ensure that its self-driving equipment worked. Back in those days the trains quite literally used clockwork and rubber band technology... and no computers!
    Happily all went well, although a change had to be made to the original design criteria to quieten public alarm at seeing how closely slowly moving trains travelled when entering and leaving stations!

    Nowadays they do go beyond Hainault, but they often stop and wait at Hainault for a few minutes before continuing their journey.
    As I understand it, typically these trains travel to North Acton, where they reverse in the middle platform.

    Trains from the Hainault loop that terminate at Woodford have always gone into the siding, its just a shame that I did not have any historic footage to show this.
    When travelling east these trains show a destination of "Woodford via Hainault", but for most passengers who use the three stations between Hainault & Woodford its still quicker to change trains at Woodford.
    I think the Crossrail plans have changed and Epping will not be switched from Central Line to Crossrail.

    Why 1962 stock seems older than 1960, which gives a glimpse of 1967/72/73 stocks son the windows? Why to return to the older window configuration of the 1959 stock on the 62 stock?

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  7 років тому

      1960 Tube stock was planned to use trailer coaches from the 1920's! Anyway, London Transport were desperate to get new higher capacity trains for the Central Line as BR was electrifying suburban routes into Liverpool Street and LT was concerned that there would be a surge in passenger numbers which would overwhelm their trains. So, they decided to build a second batch of the 1959 Tube stock that was being built for the Piccadilly Line, and these became known as the 1962 Tube Stock.

  • @NC-002

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  6 років тому +1

      I think they did when built but these were sealed closed when the trains were converted for ATO.

    • @NC-002
      @NC-002 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, that makes sense, if the driver "fell out of the cab", the train would be gone! Could've been disastrous!

    • @MervynPartin
      @MervynPartin 4 роки тому

      If you look carefully, at the front of the cab there is a tube leading from the end door with a cable to the tripcock, so that it could be reset by the driver without having to leave the cab. This had to be arranged following the sealing of the side doors.
      As the technology was being tested on these 1960 stock trains on the Woodford- Hainault shuttle, there were warning signs on the platform about "Automatic trains in operation". I was lucky enough to have a cab ride in one and start the train.
