- This is a C64-style chiptune cover of Michael Jackson's Thriller from the album with the same title. It was arranged for two SIDs, so the maximum polyphony is 6 voices.
NOTE: This wasn't made on a C64, but I tried to be maximally authentic
Sid Chip did his best....congratulations to the person who made it
Perfectly done !!! MJ's Thriller deserved a C64/SID version for decades ! Since the Thriller released in the C64 era ! 🔥🔥
Thanks :) Thriller was released in November of 1982, a few months after the C64. On the other hand, nobody in 1982 knew how to get the most out from the SID chip - see the early demos by Commodore. Although I wasn't alive back then, but I would say that the music scene of the C64 started to develop in 1985 with Rob Hubbard's tunes.
@@AttilaSVK I was alive at that era, I was at my childhood back then.. Indeed people don't know how to use SID chip perfectly.. Since most of the SID artists like Jeroen Tel was oftenly make Video-Game soundtracks and Demoscene was limited only in Cracktro Scenes of the cracked Video-Game intros with the Demo-Gangs such as Razor-1911 or Zombieheads, or Bronx etc. Especially after 1984-85 the Demoscene and SID / Pixel Art became famous.

Nevermind just read your description ignore my question :p 2 SIDs used got it. Great work though.

Just one question, it seems like you are using more than 3 voice layers, Or there was some sort of timing used that intelligently maximizes the use of each layer because I can simultaneously almost hear more than one voice if you know what I mean.
+Michael Korben He stated that this is aiming to recreate two SID chips. That should explain everything.
Thank you for pointing that out Automatik. Did you read the comment right above this one where I acknowledge that 2 SIDs are being used?
Michael Korben
No. Maybe, the UA-cam comments system screwed up again, or I'm just blind.
no worries, I should have 'cleaned' up the comments anyways and not left two separate ones.
Really cool cover, the bassline is amazing. I only wonder why this needed 2 SIDs with 6 voices? I think this could be made using only 1 SID. Congrats and thanks for sharing!
The bassline occupies two channels, which are hard-panned to the left and right, and are slightly detuned to each other. That would leave only one oscillator free on the SID, which is not enough for the drums, melody and the arpeggio. (of course, I know that the SID chip is mono only, so if I wanted to keep the drums, melody and arp in the center, I would need a third SID chip in fact)
Great work, no doubt :) I did not consider the sound being stereo which makes my previous remark obsolete.

@@Nordischsound it sounds awesome. When I get ony PC tommorow I'll have to download the sid file to play it on my VICE emulator and my C64 mini

Not bad. But still not quite the SID Chip. But it's close. Best bet. Would be to get 8-bit GUY (KEYS) to create you a real SIS version of this.

Really great C64 cover. Please contact me, I would like to remix this track.
Sure, go ahead
@@AttilaSVK please contact me through my mail on my channel for specifics needed for the remix. Thanks!
@@AttilaSVK my e-mail is on my youtube channel. please contact me, wanted to get your stems to your C64 Cover. Thanks.
Saj Awan there are no stems. I don’t have the project files anymore, so I cannot export each track separately. I don’t even have a lossless version of the mixdown :( Try Phonicmind to extract some stems from the audio. That’s what I did recently for the two 80s styled re-imaginations of current Slovak pop songs.
@@AttilaSVK Ok will try that. I just wanted to remove the lead sound and keep everything else the same. I'll send you a link when it's done. Thx!

240p for HQ

No to szacun :) Autor użył dwóch SIDów do tego kawałka.
I arranged it for two SID chips (the maximum polyphony is 5 notes), although in real life it could be done only on 3 SIDs. One SID would play the bassline in the left channel, the second one would play the bassline (a bit detuned for the chorus effect) in the right channel, and the third SID would play the drums, arpeggio and melody.
I'd love to know more about how this was done, technically... Was an actual C64 involved at any point, or did you use a SID sequencer on a PC/Mac?
I think he used VST Plugins to simulate the C64 sound, yiu might check out my real c64 version with 3 channels: ua-cam.com/video/TXvVKWwMqcA/v-deo.html

Unpopular opinion: 240p actually makes this sound a lot worse.
good job!
