  • Hobby King Bixler 2 First Flight & Crash
    Finally took the Bixler 2 out for its maiden flight. Really enjoying the plane and the nerves were just starting to settle when...
    I guess you could say I was getting a little too confident for my own skill level.
    Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video.

    Those fomies are great trainers because they can take a lick and keep on ticking. Great flight mate glad to hear things worked out with her.

    Awesome flight even with the little boo boo at the end. But when you think about it, your at the park on a gorgeous day flying and your with your kids and all 3 of you are having a fantastic time. It doesn't get any better than that!

    Fantastic flight! I also get nervous as heck for my maiden flight with any new plane. The crash wasn't too bad and she looks like she can be repaired easily.

    That was awesome! I'll say that the simulator helped a lot-- you looked good! A little brain fart at the end but overall- very graceful. The loops and inverts were very cool. The fact that you made a video at the same time is even more cool! Landing right next to your feet was great! I like how your daughter said she felt sorry for the plane. Beautiful day at the park for kids and flying-- loved this video!

      Haha, thanks mudguy. Yeah, she was actually really upset I crashed it, but overall they had a great time. It was the perfect a for it, that's for sure.
      The simulator has probably been the best investment I've made in pursuit for flight. Without it, I don't think I would have done as well as I did on this day, despite the crash. The good news is, the plane is all fixed and I have flown again a couple of times without incident. ;)

    5:56 - "I'm probably a little bit high still"… hmm, I would recommend doing Maiden flights while sober. That would explain why you had the guts to go inverted on a Maiden though. Hahaha, just messing with you Vas! Brilliant maiden buddy! Well, other than the crash ending, but it doesn't look too bad. I was smiling the whole time… love getting to see you get your first plane flights in. :)

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  10 років тому +2

      I never thought of that sentence with a different meaning until now. LOL. Thanks.
      Going inverted was due to all the practice I did on the sim and most of what I did on the day was just a repeat of what I do on computer. Yes, even the crash. LOL. The good news is that the plane is all fixed and I have flown it three more times since this video, totalling somewhere between 1.5 to 2 hours flight time. My last flight was during a rather breezy afternoon, too. Certainly calls for a sharper level of concentration when coming in for a landing and plane starts to get tossed around by the wind. Still great fun though.
      Thanks for watching this Ryan, really appreciate it buddy. :)

    Thanks for the video! Your Bixler 2 experience pretty much echoes my own. My maiden flight was disastrous, and resulted in a wing ripped out by the roots, plus a broken spar. But since then I've come to grips with the thing, and it's been my main flyer this year. Recently I fitted a GoPro, and have had a great time shooting aerials with it. Cheers, and happy landings!

    Sweet video. I remember my first flight didn't check all my controls and my elevator was reversed. First throw i smashed it into the ground and completely broke the nose off. Bit of hot glue and tape and she was flying around fine 15 minutes later!

    Vas you did extremely well for a learner mate. I know you have had a smaller plane which was 3ch but you did good on this one mate. Just a little tip mate. When your making aileron turns you give a little up elevator as well as the plane comes around for the turn. If you dont you will tipstall the plane (google it) which will make the plane loose altitude and if your close to the ground you will crash. Another tip is when you get a programable radio you dial in some rudder when you use ailerons. This makes your turns allot smoother and brings the nose around nicely. You will find using the rudder to make turns will make you a better pilot mate. Anyways you did really good mate. Im impressed

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  10 років тому

      Thanks man. Great tips. Much appreciated. Yes, I know about the "tipstall" thing. I've actually been watching a lot of flight videos to catch up on all the good and bad things on some of these planes. A programmable radio is a great idea, but I am a long way away from getting anything like that, so for now I will have to do all the little inputs myself. I don't mind though, I like learning how to do it myself anyway. :)

      Yes I agree with everything you say, and Vas alot of these guys have some great advise and I'm super excited to hear you have flown again without incident. You and I had a long conversation back when you were first getting your sim and you have def put it to much good use. I have also noticed you are a fan of the channel#flight test and definitely check your COG you seem to be a tad tail heavy, and it would be much better if you were nose heavy I can tell from when your gliding you get that pendulum effect where you go up stall then up again and so on and so on. Josh Bixler and the "intern" from Switzerland I am sorry to have forgotten his name but they do a great vid on center of gravity. But wicked great to see you flying, I myself tool out my jet after I bored out the fans to a twin 90 mm set up pushing 160-180 mph. Once I get my fpv gear in check I'll upload some flight time but again great job and check that cog.

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  10 років тому

      Erik Hnis Thanks Erik. I noticed the centre of gravity was a little off, but that pendulum effect was also induced by my elevator being trimmed up a little. I did this for the launch so the plane would rise, but I didn't trim it back in mid flight. I have since learnt a couple of things since this first flight and the plane flies much smoother now.
      I will upload another video in a week or tow to show you my progress. Just need some more flight time.

    • @stalyoni
      @stalyoni 10 років тому

      vas i forgot to mention when on your launches you should only need 3/4 throttle to take off. Also hold down the elevator with your left hand and throw it with your right hand and that way the plane will climb instantly when its in the air. Hope this helps

    Hi, nice maiden ! I just bought the Bixler 2 as well. I'm almost finished building it. I hope my maiden will be as good, just getting it to fly you know. Sorry about your crash but it didn't look like a total crash, you're probably flying it again ? Ah, you are, I just read the rest of the comments. Great ! I just had a TopRC Blazer but at my maiden I did a hand launch and although it started well, it just dropped the nose after 25 meters and dived right into the ground. With the prop in front needless to say the whole thing was good for the bin....totally crushed and destroyed. So, I hope to have better luck with this Bixler 2, being a pusher plane. I come from multicopters and planes are new to me. Any suggestions buddy ? Thanks. Phil

    ouch.
    try throwing it first. make sure its got enough up trim, so many people come a cropper on that first powered launch. and remember. power into the loop and glide out :P

    • @AussieRCPlayground
      @AussieRCPlayground  9 років тому

      Blake guyan Thanks. This video is quite old now and my skills have improved a lot since then. I have several other planes now and the Bixler has been upgraded to reach over 100kph (or 60mph). Too much power for it I think, but a lot of fun to fly. Check out my other videos on it...

      It's ok, I had it fixed and ready for another flight later that same day. I've actually flown it twice since this video without incident and it flies just fine. But yeah, lucky it's foam - hot glue and tape is all that's needed to fix her up. :)

    More weight in the nose. You were flying tail heavy. Do you still have it?

      Haven’t had this plane in over 2 years now. I miss it though...

    • @SteveLoves2Fly
      @SteveLoves2Fly 6 років тому +1

      You may want to think of buying the kit and building it again. This time you can order the motor mount at the same time you order the plane. This will allow you to put on stronger motos with larger propellers. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but more weight in the nose will help it fly a lot better. It likes to fly balanced, and then a bit nose heavy on windy days. It will stay up longer and flies a lot better. There are a few controls you should learn about how to use with your radio. The first is camb. It will help you get the plane off the ground when there isn't a lot of wind. Andrew Newton also has a good tutorial on teaching you how to launch a mid-plane pusher prop (they aren't easy). Then figure out Aileron-Differential and Aileron-Rudder mixing. I have this on a switch on my radio. With it on it flies like a different plane . The turns are like butter and it doesn't drop a wing and lose altitutde.
