It's not the first time they've used noise to accent a part of a song, and given the theme of being overwhelmed by the encounter with your own inner self and its capacity for love, the loss of sonic control makes sense to me. I've also noticed that at the point in question there is high hat and the abbrasive high harmonics on the low synth pads that are also combining to make the noise. It definitely isn't bad mixing. It's not a fault, it's a feature.

It's a great song, yet I can't get over the way he sings the word 'Matter', it just sounds slightly off, the note too flat

The vocal of this song is actually in one take and it was the only take. It was recorded to a laptop that was running low on battery (according to an instagram Q&A). In fact for this album they just record quite a few tracks in one take. The band left imperfections and even mistakes in the record on purpose. They used to glue the best part from several takes together to produce a shiny track but they just didn’t do it this way this time.
