Easily tied with the Atlas for my favorite mech. When building out my company for my campaign my HQ runs around in a Crusader, couldn't pass it up.

Im a catapult lover so didnt really feel the need to pick up another LRM heavy aside from maaaaybe an archer but damn if this didnt make me reconsider.
For this mech. I would never shoot the ML's until your out of ammo. The "8r" reminds me of the older 3025 model. So I consider it a stepping stone for players to get into the high end games.
Just ordered my first BT set earlier today, expecting it in about two weeks. Looking forward to painting up a lance of Taurian Volunteer Guard.
Aw yes, Christmas comes early! I absolutely love the Crusader. It's such an iconic IS workhorse design. It's no surprise to me that it's survived all the way to the IlClan eta since it's a stable platform for multiple missile systems. I'm not too keen on the XL engine, and think it would be better off with Endo-Steel and a standard fusion engine. However, this thing is definitely a beast! I can totally see it as a command mech for a light assault company.

Awesome video! Always liked the Crusader. Been thinking of fielding a force of the Unseen using variants packing Clan tech for an eventual battle. I figured that when the SLDF left the Inner Sphere to go get a pack of cigarettes, they brought the Crusader alongside the Marauder, Phoenix Hawk, and Warhammer.
Also, something I was thinking about. I really like the comm chatter intros to the Battle Reports. Adds a great level of immersion. Watched the Battle Report where Nicolai Malthus looked so happy after victory. Have you guys considered doing a brief comms chatter outtro for a Battle Report as well? Something like a victorious taking the field, or sounding the retreat? Looking forward to the next video!

I’ve always loved the Crusader - mainly the 3L and 5M for the jump jets.
I'm sold! All my units are getting dang Crusaders now, lol. Really like Succession Era mechs upgraded to actually box in the ilclan era. The new Crusader sculpt is great, saw an early release painted up over at CamoSpecs and started drooling. The sentiment was shared elsewhere in the comments that this mech could really belong in a command lance, pair it with a hard hitting direct fire mech and some bullet sponges.
Can’t wait to see them all painted!

My favorite crusader is the one that ditches the 2nd ton of SRM ammo and the MG's and ammo for armor and heatsinks. Beastly mech once you clean up the internal bomb storage a bit and refine the loadout a tad. I do move the lasers to the CT and SRMs to the side torsos though... not much point to waving a single medium laser behind you, would rather protect the engine and remaining ammo from a crit ;)

That crusader is slick even if it is a bit of a walking bomb, it does have case and a lot of armor, so you just have to not be scared and go for it IMO. I am glad you mentioned the machine guns because I cant stand them on anything... total wasted BV in any game I have played.
I was yelling at you through the screen to move your crusader up and engage to use the BV you paid for in the last couple bat reps, but at the same time I was also cheering #teamthom too hard.
Does battalytics count both side torsos blown off with case protection as an ammo death or as an engine death? As it is technically the engine dying that kills the mech, even though it was the ammo detonating that killed he engine. Or is that too negligible to count and or doesnt matter.
Counts it as an ammo kill as that was the catalyst!
The other fun part about the 8R is it could have been built at the beginning of the Jihad, with the exception of the CASE II. Everything else is all standard 3067 tech. Only the CASE II would have been experimental at that time

It's not a bad variant. Heat doesn't really seem to be as much of an issue at first gasp except maybe at the 6-9 hex area, since you're either going to be low on ammo or min-range for LRMs. I'd play this version in a heart beat. It isn't one of the weird ones (I still shake my head at the Heavy Gauss version...)

As to the crusader, I normally switch a lot of its weapons to the torsos. At least in custom builds of it.

Played a game last week and had a crusader 3R in my lance. And he didn‘t die because of an ammo explosion! 😉 In fact, he survived relatively unscathed.
Other mechs in the lance were a thunderbolt 5S, orion K and a victor 9K.
Crusader stayed behind and used his LRMs and only pushed forward when all other mechs were occupied otherwise.
Did some decent damage, but 10 heatsinks are barely enough 😄.
The poor thunderbolt got cored in two rounds though.
When you cant afford a lance get 1 mech to do everything :-) great all rounder which comes at a cost...glad to see another analysis vid my favourite and you do it well :-)

I'm gonna let you finish but the CRD-10S is the greatest Crusader of all time.
I'll keep on saying it. There is a lot of things wrong with the Crusader on paper, but it does two things right that over compensates for all of its problems thick armor and a great weapons suit. Yeah older ones could explode but you don't put it put it on the front lines, you play it behind your thunderbolts and combat mediums, use the SRM's defensively. Just used mine in my last game, it got savaged and had to be taken from the field on a salvage tract, but wiped out a marauder and injured an archer. Did a lot of work allowing the assault mechs of the lance to do their thing. A thunderbolt ended up strapped down on the tracts from an AC 20 shot to the head with it. Its a favorite mech think it gets underestimated a lot, but it also gets misplayed a lot too.
I've always been disdainful of the Crusader, but the new art and sculpt are so beautiful that I've been forced to take another look at it, and visually it's gone from something I tried to forget existed to one of my favorites.
For this variant, I wonder what kind of performance gains you might get by replacing the MGs and ammo with some SPLs. In the ilClan era I'd also want to look at taking advantage of the availability of Clan tech to do a weapon upgrades (cALRM20s, probably, with cSSRM6s, cERMLs, and cSPLs). I'm not at my computer and can't whip up a test build, but I suspect it'd hit like a truck and its BV would go through the roof, defeating the purpose of an extremely high-efficiency build.
Replacing those MGs for anything would be useful for sure… 😆

My second favorite heavy after the Orion. I love the 5S, the 5M, and everything after them. My usual Succession Wars loadout is to remove the MGs and ammo for two more heat sinks.

Ah I love the Huron Warrior - I fell in love with the full color art from back in the day.
It's basically an advanced tech Enforcer, now that I think about it. Like the Ghillie from Mechwarrior Online before that was even a thing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: machine guns make so much sense in the background that they should be pretty much ubiquitous. But in terms of the classic battletech game they are really bad (outside of very specific circumstances).
100%! I don’t even find them terribly effective against infantry in classic - at least not worth the risk. Whoever decided on 200 rounds of ammo needs to be questioned haha.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming when you take the ammo bin into account a machine gun becomes more of a liability than anything else.
My all MG Atlas design still makes me chuckle though.

Heaps of later era Inner Sphere mechs are undercosted , this ain't my favourite version of the Crusader though I love the Capellan stealth armoured version , only 3/5/3 similar weapons , only normal CASE but no XL engine .
