The UK Betrays the BBC

- What will happen to the BBC???
Back in 2022, the UK government announced that it would be altering the British Broadcasting Corporation’s funding scheme to the tune of NEGATIVE 2 BILLION pounds!
The BBC is a British state owned media corp. It’s a complex issue, because in the past there have been reports of some… muddy financials at the BBC. But, also, the broadcaster tends to criticize the government where criticism is due…
…So it’s a bit suspicious that the government was defunding them at the time. Because this is a common tactic that governments will use: remove funding from a government-funded agency, wait for the service to deteriorate due to that very lack of funding, then blame the agency for the poor service and sell it off! All while claiming that privatization will improve it!
This video is a bit of a speculative look at how this kind of thing goes down, using the BBC’s experience as an example.

The BBC is generally fairly accurate, but it is that way, so that when the British government needs to spread propaganda, is it believed. Likewise, the funding and even the existence of the BBC is dependent on the good graces of the governing coalition, or in practical terms, the Prime Minister. The only reason Thatcher didn't privatize the BBC is because a significant portion of the Tory voter base would have objected to it.
But more importantly, privatizing the BBC in the 1980's would have meant forcing television commercials on nearly every in the UK. Privatizing the BBC now means removing the TV license fee, in exchange for losing content that any given person may or may not be actually consuming. The average teenager now watches more youtube videos than actual TV shows.
Mr. Spherical I want to see you do polcompballs
Elon Musk: BBC is government funded.
UK: Stop it.
Musk changed the wordings from "Government-funded" to "Publicly-funded" later on. It is more accurate now.
I know I'm not reading the room here, but I have to speak how I feel, and I need a good rant about this. Remembering the kind of company the BBC was when it did have all that funding, I have a chronic inability to feel sorry for it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm against privatising and selling the BBC (mostly because I wouldn't trust any company willing it buy it. I vomit at the idea of modern Americanized reboots of The Vicar of Dibley or Blackadder) but if the BBC just went bankrupt or something, I wouldn't feel any great loss.
BBC News, at least on a political party stance, was always as impartial as you could possibly get from media, but on an international scale, they were never impartial.
Remember that time when BBC News were asked to play God Save the Queen after brexit, and they played the Sex Pistols version instead? Whether you pray to or wipe your arse with the EU flag, or whether you lick pictures of the royal family or burn them for fun, that move always just had the energy of a sulking 6-year-old who refused to eat his vegetables.
Ever wonder why people abroad think the BBC is just a news broadcaster and forget that it does anything else? It's mostly because despite being named for and built for being the sole British broadcaster, it hasn't made anything entertaining in years now. Even when they do try and make entertainment, it's boring and terrible nowadays. The new War of the Worlds 3-parter was boring and clearly prioritizes political messaging over being an entertaining piece of media. Same for Upstart Crow, but with the tragic reminder that the golden age of BBC sitcoms (Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Only Fools and Horses, Vicar of Dibley, etc) is long behind us. The last good piece of entertainment they made was Inside Number 9, and that's nearly 10 years old now (maybe you could argue The Goes Wrong Show too, but that's just an adaption of a stage play). Even the far more left-leaning Channel 4 had a good entertaining show recently with the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared TV show, and Red Dwarf moved channels to Dave years ago.
The BBC seem to have such a lack of understanding - or total contempt - for their biggest money-makers. We can argue until the cows come home about whether or not it was right to sack Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear for punching the producer, but everyone can agree that replacing them all with pre-established celebrities with no thought and just expecting them to have the same chemistry and charm was a terrible move. Doctor Who had it even worse in the last few years. Much like their other shows, it was just boring and clearly values its political messaging over being entertaining. It's interesting, coming from the supposedly impartial BBC, that they want to put political messaging in all their shows.
The Television License Company, which totally has nothing to do with the BBC, has spent years gallivanting the country giving people a hard time and trying to scam people into paying for TV license fees they don't need. It's got to the point where people abroad are using it as a meme to roast the UK. It's literally a national insult. What's even the point of having something that's nationalised and taxpayer funded like the BBC if it costs money to use anyway?
What makes it even worse is iPlayer and the dawn of streaming services. The BBC could have been one of the first companies in the Streaming Service race, but it insisted on clinging to its outdated TV license system instead for years. Now that they have a streaming service in the form of Britbox, it's a total mess. If you want to watch New Millennium Doctor Who, you have to pay a license fee and watch it on iPlayer. If you want to watch the old episodes, you have to pay for Britbox as well. It's a total grift.
The BBC's nepotism strangled the British animation industry for decades, with no-one but Smallfilms being able to find any success. The only reason Aardman was given a chance was because their co-founder's fathers had connections to the BBC already. Nowadays, the BBC will bend backwards to AVOID employing British animators, like having the Danger Mouse reboot animated in Ireland. Ireland hates our guts, and they don't even have cheaper labour. What is even the point?
Also, the several decades the BBC spent trying to cover up Jimmy Saville is just sick.
For a company called the British Broadcasting Corporation, I've never known an institution hold the British public in as much contempt. Sometimes I feel the Australians, I hate this whole "whinging pom" culture of the UK where people will complain about anything for years, until it actually threatens to change, at which point we'll just 180 and decide it's part of our national identity now.
The British government doesn't want the people to know the truth about what Britain is doing or what Great Britain has done to this world from crimes and a lot of things 😢💔
Why is this so accurate
It only looks accurate to you because you haven't heard about their history of letting Jimmy Saville abuse young women.

Oh God, not Rupert Murdoch
I personally find that I like the BBC quite a bit, some of the best nature documentaries and such ever made. Almost all other ones made by Nat Geo and stuff tend to be really over exagerating and obnoxious to watch, its why David Attenborough is a blessing to this country and to the world. BBC news I have mixed opinions on, I do use it personally when not looking at political stuff because while bias exists, its a lot less than what you see on explicitly left or right wing news channels like FOX news in America.
Their rebranding recently has also been one of the best ive seen in a company on the small budget of around £2 million they redesigned all of their websites, logos, created their own new fonts, and redid a lot of things like the graphics and stuff they use on TV channels. I personally like BBC a lot more than ITV which is mostly mindless garbage these days. Plus BBC Radio, BBC Iplayer, and all of that are great, and they provide local news services for each UK region. They even have TV and Radio station specifically in Welsh and Scottish Gaelic. BBC food is great too, it encourages people to experiment with cooking (all recipes are free) and healthy eating more. People dont always remember how many services the BBC provide that are really, really useful beyond BBC News.
Oh, and no annoying advertisements. I think BBC content seems to be so much better because its not done so much with profit in mind, and therefore tends to be a lot less sensationalist. I kind of hate News that only focus on awful (but kind of insignificant) things like a specific person being murdered or someone doing something that makes people angry or whatever. I think the biggest problem is that they often tend to be more tame than anything, and sometimes *dont* talk about certain things that are important.
I wouldnt say theyre particularly left or right leaning, because about 20% of people in a study believed they leaned towards the left, while 20% believed they leaned towards the right… I think any time people see the BBC make an article that doesnt align with their views, they assume its because theyre politically biased, when they also make articles that do align with their own views in equal amounts. I dont think they align themselves with specific political parties or towards the right or left, but there has been plenty of complaints of homophobia / transphobia by the BBC, which is awful.
The BBC logo is out of date.
