🎤 To watch with subtitles, please click the 'CC' button on your UA-cam video player :) Good evening! And welcome to this walk around the heart of Gateshead, the second-largest settlement on the River Tyne, right across from the spectacular city of Newcastle. Gateshead and Newcastle's history is deeply intertwined, but on this walk, we'll explore all of the unique sights and stories that make Gateshead a proud Tyneside town! At the end of our walk, we visit Trinity Square, which we mentioned was once the site of a huge car park that famously featured in the 1971 film 'Get Carter', starring Michael Caine. The 'Get Carter Car Park', as it was known to many, wasn't just a car park, with a shopping centre, indoor market hall and more all built into its structure, along with a café that was once situated on its top floor! Things look very different today, though...
Mind the place has changed, I lived in Gateshead - Devonshire Street 67 - until 1956 (when I was 8 years old) Moved to Denmark, my father being Danish, my mother English. It was lovely to see Sct. Josephs Church, I went to All Saints School, my teacher Miss Conway, the best teacher ever. Now 76 and still a Geordie at heart, thank you for the tour which also brought me down memory lane.
Grateful for having learned a lot about gateshead which has britain´s ugliest, most depressing town centre whilst Newcastle is one of Europe´s most graceful, beautiful cities. It is a great place for a massive urban regeneration though although that new shopping centre, mainly these flats, is beyond ugly, carter´s car park was iconic and a 60´s masterpiece. thank you very much
@@hazelshaw9289 The current scene is far from pretty but, iconic or not, that carpark was horrendous. We touched on an interesting part of the town when we passed The Central. I seem to remember the wee street behind the pub is Half Moon St which, last time I saw the place, was full of historic buildings, including a couple of other old pubs. That was a lot of years ago though; it's maybe another carpark by now.
Gateshead is like that because newcastle sucks the life out of it and claims everything as theirs. Newcastle would be nothing wothout the massive town next door feeding it
Enjoyed the video . Haven’t been up to that part of the world for a while . But I do enjoy seeing Newcastle in the Vera series . Looks a nice town Gateshead. Look forward to seeing it again one day .
Nice live walk of the town. I enjoyed it can't wait to see more soon your history lessons are always great and your walks are always enjoyable very beautiful and historical the medieval town is, I like the medieval buildings and houses. have a great day greetings from Canada 😀😀
I was born in Gateshead....it was always described as a dirty back lane, leading to Newcastle.....I visited again a couple of years ago...and to my horror..it's much worse than it was in the sixties..The council have made a dump..an even bigger dump!
Another lovely walk - many thanks for posting these. I'm currently reading a set of books set around this area, and it really helps to have a visual representation to match up against what I imagine the areas to look like!
They don't have enough money for many essential services for vulnerable children, adults, elderly or disabled residents. Nor for many repairs to a lot of roads etc. The time on the clock tower being correct on one face, let alone all four is probably not high on their priorities lol 😞
I'd like to point out that the "Angel" was never meant to be an angel, it was meant to represent the heavy industrial history of the north east of England. but it has subsequently been tagged with the name of Angel of the north.
You're a bit sparse on the history front, obviously not local but paid to read a card. Come to Gateshead get a bus lane fine and see the deserted high street you can't miss it it's about 50 years behind you.
Everything gateshead has newcastle claims as theirs. Town centre of gateshead is too close to newcastle and everyone from gateshead goes to newcastle, same with the football. Majority of newcastle fans are from gateshead and abandoned their own town team to support another citys team. Gateshead is a big place, without it newcastle would be nothing. People moan about newcastle sucking all the juice out of gateshead, when the same people go to newcastle to eat, drink, work, football
@@da90sReAlvloc not really Geordies, they are from newcastle. Untill 1974 gateshead was part of durham and many people dont class as geordies. The north east is made up or nearly 3 million people and newcastle is only 300k of that.

the carport was an ugly oppressive thing to see. it may have been a sixties icon, but if you had to see it regularly it was very depressing.

You would think they could get the clock faces to show the same time. Come on Gateshead Council; get yer fingers out.

Swing bridge is up the river from the Millennium Bridge, not down.

Personally, I consider it one of the ugliest monstrosities to ever blight our beautiful Northern scenery.
Utterly hideous!
Gateshead council are hopeless.Gateshead is a tip
