I revisit this video over the years and it still hits as strongly as the first time. I really think it’s the best total encapsulation of filmmaking as art/storytelling/love in existence.
The magic of these videos is how movies from completely different genres and topics are melded into the same mood and feeling. And the transition from the original Raise Your Weapon to the remix is just amazing mixing full stop.
I remember back waiting for this video to come out. Once it finally arrived, It took so long to load the entire video due to my shitty internet. Good times, good memories.
Matt, you're a gifted editor in every way and I believe this 6-minute montage (which tries to tell us what movies are) is one of the best homages to the film art. Amazed and touched am I every single time.
this is the best of all 2011 montages that I've seen so far.. everything connects so well, the timing is perfect, great song choices, super super video.. congrats to the editor!
One of my favourite youtube videos ever. So inspiring dude-- the choice of sound bites, music, and images coalesce to perfection. This is everything I love about movies.
cant count how many times i've watched this video. sheer perfection in its editing, and more than that is the fact that it reminds all of us the fundamental reasons why we love cinema. thank you. thank you. thank you.
Boy, have you outdone yourself this year! There's not enough space here to point out all the things I love, so I'll just go with my favorite part: the beginning. You start with the film reels and the Hollywood signs, then move to the wide, landscape shots. Next you shift the focus to people, with lots of up-close shots of hands and feet, then medium shots, but you keep the face obscured. Finally, we get the big reveal with the montage of close-ups. Dynamite song choice, by the way.
Incredible job on this one Matt, I've been following these since 2008 and I think this one may be my new favorite. The Madeon remix of "Raise Your Weapon" fit perfectly, and just so happened to be one of my favorite tracks of 2011. Thank you for continuing to make these videos, awesome work!
Found this on my old favorites and now subbed bc just...wow. This blows my mind that it released 8 years ago and I found it again to be possibly the best love letter or encapsulation of film. (I also found the most amazing animated film REDLINE from this- so thanks)
My favorite thing about all of these cinescape videos on youtube is that the editors use all of these movie clips and it feels like they all telling one story together.....
I have a great interpretation: From 1:42 to 1:49, it demonstrates how filmmakers feel like they have to make their movie big and dazzling for people to see it. But as Pooh says "A simple hello would do," it shows how audiences don't need dazzle to be interested in a film. One of the many analyzations that can be made out of your great video.
Amazing! I was thinking the other day that not that many great films came out this year, but this made me feel otherwise. Thank you. The end killed me. Just amazing.
This was absolutely amazing. The way you changed moods so flawlessly and seamlessly gave me chills every time. This - is - real - art. Never stop. People always say "doors open for you." Nay, fuck that, you opened those doors with this. You did it.
Matt you are a freakin animal on that non-linear system. Nice work man! There's so much material out there and and you accomplished putting it into a new order. Enjoy your future edits!
Holy Shit! What a beautifully video, so fantastically edited! I love the way you weave the different genres of film so fluently together to create such a wonderful masterpiece!
wow this is amazing!! Tihis is so different from your previous works. You usually use one song and no voiceover. The editing is outstanding and the voiceover is used to perfectionI just don't understand how people make this quality of video, it's insane. Great job.
i have been watching this over and over again. I'm so disappointed you have less views than the other two big 'cinescape' videos but nevertheless, this is awesome.
This was a bit heavy with empty quotes, but it suited the tone and structure of the video very well. So far, this is definitely in my top 3 favorite annual tributes this year.
You put a hell of a lot of work into this and I'm very impressed. The producers for the 2011 oscars will likely spend a million dollars on some sort of year-in-review bit, and it won't be as good as this.
Is there a chronological list of the clips? I love the last clip its the perfect way to end :D Amazing work. The editing is better this year including the sound bites of dialogue works better than conceptualize. A true tribute to movies!
It so good to see that some people watched Weekend and Les amours imaginaires!! I have seen a few videos about movie of 2011 and none of them you see those!! btw great job on the video editing
It was an absolute TREAT to watch your brilliant compilation. Pitch perfect incorporation of such a wide range of clips, and surprisingly, one could even identify a certain story-like arc in it. I don't know if you would indulge my tiny request, but could you please share, or direct me to a link that has the names of all the movies you used to create this particular clip?
Oh my gosh, so this is where Kees got his inspiration. i myself was naturally inspired just from film and commercials alone, but am now inspired even more from both Kees and Matt. now add Daniel L.C. to the list in a short while when i release more of cinema things.
Films are made to show emotion, beauty and the impossible. This year had so much of that, as did every other year. But you took those elements down and showed it all in under 7 minutes. What a way to finish the year of movies off. Well down.
I normally wouldnt' subscribe to a channel which I only watch one video a year, but I remember when I watched the 2010: The Cinescape and it was so awesome, and the only reason I subscribed was to watch the 2011: The Cinescape, and here we are one year later; also I think it would be awesome if you could make videos like these every month then you would be able to encompass a lot more awesome movies. See you next year keep bringing the awesomeness.
I don't know how you managed to squeeze in I'm glad my mother's alive and 3 in there...I was pleasantly surprised by that. Great job as always good sir!
wow. I wonder why the oscars can't see what is in youtube. You're amazing and this video is better than everything that happen in the Oscars Ceremony in the last 10 years, at least. Congratulations sir Btw, amazing sound editing.
Awesome! Beautifully done! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should buy the rights to this video and use it as montage to open the Oscars!
This is phenomenal and I'm excited to see the previous years! Is there any way/place to download this? I'd gladly donate a few dollars to be able to have a copy of it on my harddrive I could watch whenever.
I come back to this Cinescape every few months. Gets me every time.
I revisit this video over the years and it still hits as strongly as the first time. I really think it’s the best total encapsulation of filmmaking as art/storytelling/love in existence.
9 years on, and this is still the best one of these any one has ever made.
Spent 20 mins t
Rediscovering this gem. Very much worth it, nothing in 10 years has compared
I still get excited/emotional everytime I see this, after all this time. Incredible...
I come back to this video every year or so, and it still resonates and hits just as deep as it did the very first time I watched it
The magic of these videos is how movies from completely different genres and topics are melded into the same mood and feeling. And the transition from the original Raise Your Weapon to the remix is just amazing mixing full stop.
Still watching this in 2016
I remember back waiting for this video to come out. Once it finally arrived, It took so long to load the entire video due to my shitty internet. Good times, good memories.
Dude you have some mad editing skills. Like seriously.
Matt, you're a gifted editor in every way and I believe this 6-minute montage (which tries to tell us what movies are) is one of the best homages to the film art. Amazed and touched am I every single time.
Still watching in 2021, so incredible
Still watching in 2018, amazed at the craft just like I was when this came out and wondering how Mr Shapiro would turn this year’s cinema into art.
this is the best of all 2011 montages that I've seen so far.. everything connects so well, the timing is perfect, great song choices, super super video.. congrats to the editor!
goosebumps, tears and lots of love.

Still my favorite! Even after 2 years!
the editing is just flawless it all transitions so smoothly with one another.
Simply incredible editing, the thing that is going to set this montage apart from all others this year is how well you spliced the dialogue together.
This movie montage is mind-boggling but the creativity and sheer willpower required to edit it all together is awe-inspiring.
Moved me to tears...what an amazing talent you are, brilliantly done.
Love how meta this piece is! Brilliant job with the narrative.
The Oscars wish they had a montage as amazing as this.

I love how you take all of the different part of a movie and then put the perfect music to it. Las song was defiantly cool
I love how you included pretty much everything, including some of the bad, and still managed to make it an awesome and great montage video.
Incredible job on this one Matt, I've been following these since 2008 and I think this one may be my new favorite. The Madeon remix of "Raise Your Weapon" fit perfectly, and just so happened to be one of my favorite tracks of 2011.

the first few shots of this capture everything I love about movies. Amazing video man.
Bingeing all of these again, these years later. Still so good.
My favorite thing about all of these cinescape videos on youtube is that the editors use all of these movie clips and it feels like they all telling one story together.....

One of the many analyzations that can be made out of your great video.
This is probably the most well made movie mash-up video I have seen. Very good job and song choice!
Amazing! I was thinking the other day that not that many great films came out this year, but this made me feel otherwise. Thank you. The end killed me. Just amazing.
Exceptionally put together! Thank you. Don't think I'll ever stop loving movies!
Not a lot can make me smile, inspire me and pump me up all at once, nicely done man.
This was absolutely amazing. The way you changed moods so flawlessly and seamlessly gave me chills every time. This - is - real - art. Never stop. People always say "doors open for you." Nay, fuck that, you opened those doors with this. You did it.

One of the most beautiful video I have ever seen. Pure genius. 2012 was such a great year for movies.
I watch this every year
You can always tell when a true storyteller puts their hand to editing something. Well done :)
Excellent. You give us editors a good name man.
I haven't even seen like half of these movies but it still gave me goose bumps. Amazing!
I don't know how Kees is going to top this! Beautifully done with masterful skill. Bravo!
Holy Shit! What a beautifully video, so fantastically edited! I love the way you weave the different genres of film so fluently together to create such a wonderful masterpiece!
This broke me. Thank you, Matt. :)
i think this is the best 2011 movie tribute i've seen yet.
wow this is amazing!!
Tihis is so different from your previous works. You usually use one song and no voiceover.
The editing is outstanding and the voiceover is used to perfectionI just don't understand how people make this quality of video, it's insane. Great job.
The beginning and the moment from 3:57 till the end the video is PERFECT (I love the WHOLE video but I think those parts are simply incredible)..
Wow this is beast. Very well done.. amazing in fact the amount of editing needed to do this!
I still watch these all the time.
It was even better than I hoped it would be. you've done it again man!
How much time did it take you to make it? I have to say, this was way better than most films I've seen this year.
i have been watching this over and over again. I'm so disappointed you have less views than the other two big 'cinescape' videos but nevertheless, this is awesome.

This is pretty amazing! thanks for bringing me here Denise Vlogs.
Is there a chronological list of the clips? I love the last clip its the perfect way to end :D Amazing work. The editing is better this year including the sound bites of dialogue works better than conceptualize. A true tribute to movies!
Once again, sir, you made me cry.. Amazing!!
Simply spectacular. I loved the clips you used from super 8.
I think I've watched this montage 30 times now...let's watch it again. :P Awesome work man! :)

I love that it ended with that quote and that the last shot was from Super 8.
I'm really exited about this vid. I'm almost crying. It's amazing.
Oh my gosh, so this is where Kees got his inspiration. i myself was naturally inspired just from film and commercials alone, but am now inspired even more from both Kees and Matt. now add Daniel L.C. to the list in a short while when i release more of cinema things.

Btw, amazing sound editing.
If I do something like this on WindowsMM, I would end up getting pissed off. Can you please tell me what program do you use on editing your movie?
The "Raise your weapon" part is fucking briliant, and those Dumbledore's words...Man...Touching
i wish i could give this a thumbs up every day for eternity
The Tree of Life! So many shots from that one film stand out as among the best cinematic images of the year.
This is the best Cinescape video yet!
Drive, 50/50, Submarine, Tucker & Dale, and Young Adult are my favorite movies of 2011.
Awesome! Beautifully done! The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should buy the rights to this video and use it as montage to open the Oscars!
How do you even do this? you have to have all these movies memorized, script and scene... It's amazing!
This is phenomenal and I'm excited to see the previous years! Is there any way/place to download this? I'd gladly donate a few dollars to be able to have a copy of it on my harddrive I could watch whenever.
Made me cry.
Excellent video editing. Really proud of you.
Awesome!!! So much feelings!! Great editing!! Been waiting for this since the 2010 one xD
Absolutely great! But I sure wish there were UA-cam 'statistics' available for this video. I love to see where in the world a video is popular.
i fell in love with this as soon as i heard new order. great and beautiful job. with the oscars would follow suit
