After having the Organelle M for about a year now, I have to say it has quickly become one of my favourite instruments of all time. I studied Indian classical music (Sitar, Esraj and Veena) as well as playing guitar/bass for the last 30 years. I have other gear that is considered "serious music gear" like the Digitakt, Deluge, Mother 32, Subharmonicon, DRM1 and Ableton live 11, tons of pedals and string instruments etc. to compare to the Organelle. The Organelle takes me back to when I had no idea what I was doing with music gear and found some of my Dads old drum machines, synths, effects pedals and various midi gear he used for work and just experimented with them. That was in the 80's-90's with no internet. They were my Dads work gear and often the manuals were long lost, so I just had to experiment. The Organelle is straight forward enough that you can use it as a simple mono synth or basically as a digital melodica, but it is so endless deep that you can get totally lost in unexplored nooks and crannies. It is fun and nostalgic, but also a serious music tool. You can make a kid laugh for hours using WEPA or one of the samplers, and you can blow seasoned musicians minds with some of the crazy sequencers or great sounding synths. I forget what I paid for it, I think 600euros here in Germany, but worth every cent. Don't let the looks, advertising or demos fool you, this thing is a sleeper and will still be tripping people out for decades. Typical use cases for me are up super late at night with the Organelle hooked up to the Zoia, or at jams when there are 5 other guitar players and I want to occupy a different sonic space. Some patches are goofy and useless and others are super intuitive and easily useable in different contexts depending on who you are. The Organelle is just simply fun and inspiring. It can also be challenging and educational. What more could I ask?
The bleedin' edge.... one monosynth to modular.... all in one box with orac... brilliant. Now we can all see the future. Thank you for this great post Sir :hat1: Now 'IF' : imagine 'IF' we could get open source access to the innards to the RYTM and the OCTRACK....
So glad I got an organelle now although its sitting in my studio winking at me mostly unused but this is really going to be a game changer for the device.
Hi, great video. Question, would I be able to load my custom loaded polybeats patches in? Or does it have to the the patches and sounds that come bundled with ORAC? Also, is the CLOCK patch meant to just receive midi? Thanks for you time.
I’ve held onto my Organelle, opaque though it might be at times, knowing there is a vast sea of possibilities down below (and thinking if I stopped touring so much I could really dive in). Fortunately, this ORAC programme makes it seem so much easier to do just that: deep dive and achieve results faster than if I forced myself to learn Pure Data 😂 Thanks for your excellent work in reviewing and explaining this!
As usual a great informative review. I'd like to see you review the Zynthian; it seems to me the closest yet different open-source alternative to an Organelle!
Cosmo Spacemonkey sidenote: "GoPackGo!" 😬 Born & raised in Wisco - as lil' Wayne said: Green n yellow, Green n yellow, Green n yellow, Green n yellow... Yeah, uh-huh, you know what it is I'm a cheesehead _etc_ lol 👍 Cheers
I haven't bought an Organelle yet .. and will .. but looking at this, something tangential stands out. This machine sure could use a high C key! .. just ooooooooone more button. T'would really help with chord construction.
The fact that it has USB host for MIDI in is just amazing and the best option. You don't have velocity control over the keys by default unless you either use an external MIDI controller or you program your velocity into the patch you're using with Pure Data.
i finally got an organelle, and have been wondering how to make it a band in a box. it looks like this is the answer, getting drums, pads and sequence/raps happening simultaneously. i just want to be clear; can you save multiple ORAC setups (10 patch presets) and switch between them easily? eg, a different one per song, per live set up? i can see this would be much easier to use via iphone, hopefully somethings come out in the last year for that.
This is definitely cool but I always wondered how many people would choose this over a laptop loaded with a DAW. When it come to the circuit or the OP1 you can say it's because of the controls etc... but here the controls are few and the screen really small. So if any one can illuminate me I'd appreciate it !
Depending on what you want to achieve, the Organelle can be a great tool. For example, I managed to re-create my free improvisation instrument on the Organelle. Previously it ran in Ableton Live. Now it runs on the Organelle. The Organelle is lightweight. It comes with its own audio ins and outs. My 2012 Macbook Pro is heavy. Plus, I need to carry an audio interface for it. And the Apple power supply is not one of the lightest. The Organelle decreased the weight I need to carry while touring dramatically. The lack of a large screen on the Organelle helps in many ways on stage: you don't look boring like you do while you're looking at a laptop screen - the audience doesn't like it you don't look at a screen and rather use your ears to listen, especially if you're playing with other musicians, who will also probably not like it very much if you're constantly staring at a screen. The Organelle as it is can never replace a laptop for recording and production. It can, however, be a much more practical performance instrument. And you can attach to it any MIDI controller(s) you want.
Hai Loopop, newbie here. How to save preset in ORAC? I have a problem everytime i go to global menu and select another patches and go back to ORAC, my New 1 New 2 presets disappear Please help Loopop or anyone, kinda desperate here :(
It's even more amazing now, and it sounds beautiful but I just don't get why you have to have a six-line screen barely larger than a finger nail. Especially seing all that empty space on the panel right around it. I guess I could get one and mount a magnifying glass on it.
How far can you push it ? Does it handle four polyphonic VA synths with effects without any noticeable latency or glitches ? That would make it such a game changer.
Mark shared a document with the ballpark CPU requirement of the various instruments - so it would depend on what you used. In the video I show 3 polyphonic chains with some fx - didn’t try 4
Thanks, I found it. Looks like my Digitakt could use a few poly tracks from the Organelle! (and it would even add additional control to the Organelle over midi). Thanks for the video btw, it was really well explained.
The keyboard can be solved with MIDI, screen is a bigger problem though :/ Zynthian comes to mind but the screen isn’t much bigger. Perhaps another commenter or time will come along with something better :)
@@loopop Zynthian can use any size screen. Mine has a 7" screen for portability, but I can unplug that screen and swap in any HDMI screen such as a TV.
Oh of course yes - you can do anything you want if you program it. I thought you were referring to the sequencers in there now - built in, without programming
I understand this is fun, it's like a DIY mini portable studio. Unfortunately i find it's not practical at all, you can do same stuff and even more easily with a dedicated workstation keyboard or Maschine for example.
Perfect Circuit Audio sells them for MSRP. Don’t waste your time waiting because their sale codes that are supposed to work on everything never work for Critter and Guitari stuff.
Orac limits you to a (very small) selection of modules, not all are available. Upon loading a pretty staightforward delay/overloop, it crashed. So maybe 10 very limited organelles. I did buy the organelle based on your optomistic review, but i am returning it after making these unhappy discoveries.

Wow this makes me seriously consider one of these now, fantastic, and didn't realise the MI opensource code had been implemented in this too, nice! :D
Orac was the clear computer box in Black 7.
Blake 7 was a British SiFi tv program.
god tier teaching skills btw
Oh wow.... that's really quite cool. Makes the organelle a lot like a DAW
NomNomChomsky yeah, though it’s still very far from a DAW - more like a modular system.
with menu diving.
Your videos are excellent, thanks!
Step Recording and Wave-Changing for Chords Roll? Omg? Yes, please!!
looks like small boxes with a digital modular system built in is now a trend. this felt like the empress zoia pedal
We've been making the Organelle since January 2016!
Thank you so much for letting us know about this patch!
Holy cow I had no idea Organelle utilizes OSS. That's like +1000 points of awesomeness.
this is amazing!!!!!!!!! it's exactly all i wanted for the organelle
love the way you presented this, nice work
So glad I got an organelle now although its sitting in my studio winking at me mostly unused but this is really going to be a game changer for the device.
This was informative, sounds like great patch, makes me want to consider the Organelle again!
Sweet, now if you can load orac into orac....
wtf...
lifeanddecay every orac slot becomes an orac (oracseption) :D
Have you gone mad? You'll surely kill us all in the process.
Now we just need a portable synth with an op-1 style multitrack/fx/ intuitive workflow, and organelle style open source modules.
Jesse Mitchell this opens up the possibility of you being able to make your own. Makes it easier at least.
I mean besides to ui (unless I'm misunderstanding how it works. I don't own one) you could program one yourself with pure data.
Fabulous video. This increases the power of the organelle exponentially. Wonderful!
Dude, everything you do is my favorite.
Thanks for a great explanation of ORAC. It was very informative!
PS: I learned Pure Data because of your original review of Organelle, so thanks!
This is just a mind blowing enhancement to an already amazing little box. Can't wait to try it! Great demo and breakdown, thank you!
This thing is awesome... no idea what’d I’d use it for, but I want one anyway... look how cute it is!

YYYEEAAASSSSS! This is exactly what it needed.
Awesome

Wow, that's amazing!
so I could use orac to program a three separate tracks e.g. a bassline, lead and drum loop which would all play through the organelle simultaneously?
jasper childs yes
"Effects starts with 'F'". Luv it.

Yes! This IS magically delicious.
But can it play Crysis?
It could probably run Doom.
it would be helpful to see a comparison with "monome norns"

Chris Marvin I agree... though frankly, if you want to play live you’re better off connecting a midi keyboard

C maj is only for loosers. Its the looser scale. Minor is even worse.
now it just needs a virtual tape then it becomes even better than the op-1
so you made it a must to have man :)

Yes, you can save multiple presets and Mark Harris - the brain behind Orac just tweeted that 2.0 is coming soon so stay tuned...
Looks like I'm buying Organelle M for all my friends and family this Christmas at $600 a pop that's a steal!!!!!!!!
YES!
OK I'll buy it!!!
Woowwwww that’s amazing, glad I got an organelle a few months ago! :D
Now, could you sequence these seperate chains via seperate midi channels?
Could you do a video using the organelle with the roli seaboard? XD

Ableton Link support. Nice👍
this is great news!!!
since it has wifi can you control midi wirelessly say from an iphone
Would you consider doing an addendum to this video on the subject of "cassette" patchstorage.com/cassette/ patch for Orac for Organelle?
very cool! but not likely sorry
@@loopop no apology needed. I thought you might like it:)
I’d love to see an update now that 2.0 is out.
Mark made a really good overview on his channel - not much to add on that....
loopop yeah I just saw that. Thanks!

TROGULAR 10,000 my guess is cost but if you’re building that mount count me in!
loopop hahaha you got it, i can mass-produce them no problem.
doesn't it have HDMI out? i believe so
Yes it does
Bruv, ORAC is the name of the ship computer on Blakes 7.
You sound like CGP Grey (which is a good thing)
I've had that same thought.

"Thts Insane"!
someone knows, how does the "organelle" compare to the "magus, rebel technology"?
Is there another platform that loads open source modules like this? I'd much prefer a full keyboard and a bigger screen..

Glenn Meader cool I played with it in a show once - it’s quite nice
love the concept but I could buy a korg/roland/arturia synth for the same price. Of course I'd have a load more buttons to negotiate.
ありがとう!
Well, I kind of regret not getting an organelle now. Does Orac have a song mode?
Robert Syrett Orac itself doesn’t - it’s a matter of which sequencers you use in it - there are quite a few built in - no long ones to my knowledge
But the whole deal with the platform is that you can roll your own with enough know how.
Oh of course yes - you can do anything you want if you program it. I thought you were referring to the sequencers in there now - built in, without programming
That was what I meant, I'm just impressed at how quickly the project is developing.
Had one for a brief period. Too much work to get anything out of it.
OR run orac on a raspberry pi with a midi controller for under 200$....
WHAAAAAAAAAAATTTT?????? Fuck yeah
i miss the pocket piano
This doesn't help, the stuff that's showing up on here isn't showing up on mine?
Ughhh I just got GAS!!!!
I would like some more controls and some faders

The feeling is now mutual! Yes, you can...

How much does an organelle go for?
$495.00 is the current pricing for the unit.
check out Juno.co.uk - they have deals on them every now and then
Perfect Circuit Audio sells them for MSRP. Don’t waste your time waiting because their sale codes that are supposed to work on everything never work for Critter and Guitari stuff.
Build ur own for $100 tops!
Well, I have 25+ years and 40 years in total of software development experience, and I won't touch C++ either, so there. 🙂

Great device, with the ugliest buttons on synth's history.
If the case was wooden too, that could be pretty cool.
