  • This is our story of how we created a beautiful 250m2 permaculture garden in 60 days! We live off-grid on the Algarve coast and wanted to create an inspiring space to grow veggies, fruit trees, herbs and flowers. So we applied permaculture principles and it has been awesome so far!
    In this video you will see how we created a beautiful 250m2 permaculture garden in 60 days! Permaculture is a system of gardening that mimics nature and uses as little irrigation as possible and no pesticides or chemicals. We are off-grid and living and trying to live ‘off the land’ as much as possible so it’s important for us to have fresh produce at all times. This video shows how we used permaculture to create our very own sustainable food forest!

    Comming to the issue of fire, I had that problem in the 90ties in my fathers house.
    When you have the disgrace of a fire, neighbours help, but no one is trained, and you have to hurry. We had a fence of "caña tacuara" which caught fire very easily. The air trapped inside the bamboo makes frightening explosions. After many fires, the solution was given by water reservoirs. So every 50 meters you need a 200 litre or greater drum full of water, half buried for preventing it from tipping over. Place a table in it, so birds and little
    creatures will not drown. A very strong piece of cloth, an old woven sack (not a plastic one), or a piece of an old firefighter hose was used to fight bush flames, previously wet in the nearby 200 l drum. Also this drum provides water for buckets. I encourage everybody to make firefighter, first aid, self defense, and other courses.

      Thank you for all the tips! Yes, it’s very important to be prepared for fires as they are just part of life here. We are planning to have a big water tank and a sprinkler system as well as a wall of fire resistant trees and shrubs around the house. And of course cleaning the whole land to make fire barriers! ☺️

    I've recently started growing veggies myself, been having trouble with my rubarb and potatoes due to climate change. I found shading them helps alot, so i planted my potatoes next to my greenhouse, they get sun early morning and late evening, during the day they are shaded by the greenhouse and they have been very happy. So for potatoes and rubarb are very easily done, just try to shade them during the day 😉

    You're a great example of how much better reclaiming land works with capital for everything from earth moving to mulch. Though I will say, it can be done by hand. Spain, Italy and other countries where land is being vacated should create a permaculture homesteading programs to get abandoned 'worthless' land to people who can do well while doing good.

    Great looking garden! If you ever decide you want to use raised beds, I suggest looking into Hügelkultur. It’s a permaculture technique that offers several benefits, one of which is moisture retention, which you might be quite keen on, given the water scarcity there. Just wanted to give you this suggestion in hopes that it might serve as an inspiration. (Maybe you could use Hügelkultur for growing fruit or nut trees? If you use thick logs instead of twigs for your Hügelkultur, they release nutriënts over a longer timespan, which is especially helpful for growing something long term like trees, combine this with your drip irrigation system and those trees will practically grow themselves)
    Looking forward to the next video :)

    Your title is misleading, Annual vegetable garden created by buying in all the components and using machinery to dig is not permaculture. Nicely tended veg patch though, maybe try successional planting to avoid everything being ready at the same time, we have a very long growing season here.

    • @Life.Reimagined
      @Life.Reimagined  3 роки тому +6

      Hi Howard, thanks for your comment and thank you for watching the video. We disagree that this can not be considered permaculture. In our opinion permaculture isn’t just one thing with very set rules. We believe it’s a philosophy that you can adapt to what is possible for you, with your resources and constraints. Yes we used some machinery to prepare the soil but that will be the last time the soil will be worked for many many years to come. And yes, we did buy the compost instead of making our own (this would take years) but it comes from a local waste facility. By purchasing from them we are supporting a local company that is recycling the food scraps of the city. This allowed us to the garden now and not in 3 years when we have enough soil. Again, the straw mulch was purchased from a local farm cooperative, supporting farmers in the area. We do think this is very much in line with the three pillars of the permaculture philosophy. So whilst there has been a bit of land intervention and added resources from outside our land, we set everything up in a way that we can be as efficient as possible with the water that we use. We will definitely to succession planting to ensure nutrients are being out back into the ground. And we will grow a bigger variety and more staggered in the future. We are making our very first steps in growing veggies and are learning the ropes. So all this is to say that we think it’s better to be careful judging what is permaculture and what isn’t as this scares other people from trying it. We believe it is much better to have thousands of people doing something imperfectly than 10 people doing it perfectly (if there even is such a thing). We hope you understand what we mean and thank you again for watching and your thoughts on it 🙏

    • @Life.Reimagined

      Yes the bureaucracy is really unfortunate. We totally get that wild fires are a problem and wouldn’t even have had a problem if the land would have been a high fire risk area from the beginning. But them changing the zones 2 years after we submitted to project and not making sure to clear previous applications before they change the zones is just wrong in our opinion. Do not try to do everything by the book, or you will end up being frustrated. I have neighbourgs who built most of their house ilegally, and have been ok for 50years. So try to work it out as much as you can, the rest just bend it a little, you are far enough from people that no one will really notice.
