When parties were free back in the early 90s I saw Squarepusher perform with this synth,he was playing live bass over the top, amazing really considering how limited a synth it is,goes to show sometimes it's the vibe that counts and not the arsenal, good gig and warehouse party. Thanks Julia.
I bought one of these, right after a 101 purchase, thinking that I could use it as a 101 module. This is before I learned about how the microprocessor messed with the sound. No bueno, so I put it back in my closet. This video, though, showed me that I could step sequence. The manual is very obtuse (big shock for a Roland manual from the early Eighties), but you made it clear. I was going to sell mine, but now I'm going to take it out and jam. Big thanks!
@@jnkmal9519 Perhaps you didn't read my entire comment. When used as a *module*, with external cv controlling the voice section, said control signal is routed through the microprocessor first, which colors the sound, due to the latency.
I cycle mine to clear the sequence as you did in the video. Sometimes I wonder if all the power cycling will be its demise one day. I sure hope not! Great video.
I've got one of these and fooled around with it a little, even created a bass frequency below human hearing that shook the windows. It sits in a cupboard now but what amazes me is that they are being sold at ridiculous prices now.
Damn! I had one of these (and an SH09) both bought in the mid 80s and sold in the early 90s for the then going rate (very cheap) how I wish I had thought ahead. Thumbs up.
I loved the Spectrum keyboard as a kid lol but I get what you meant. Lovely sounds and some neat functions on this groovebox, too bad the second hand prices are so inflated nowadays!
It's nothing like a Groovebox, I had one of those and still have one of these, this is a monophonic synthesizor/sequencer. The groovebox works very differently and is more of a drum machine and far more advanced.
I'm very wary of Reddit, I am on there but lurk. Mostly, I find there's a very low SNR on all social media, YT included. I've got loads of racist / other hate comments just on these innocuous synth vids, I haven't got the time to engage with trolls any other places! But, yeah, in theory, a place where people could discuss synths civilly would be lovely! :-)
Jyoti Mishra I’m a mod for the synthesizer and synthDIY subreddits and I’ll tell you this: we don’t stand for any of that kind of toxic stuff. And luckily, we have a great group that requires very little moderation to begin with :) we’d love to have you!
Not intentionally, no but then, I do love Devo. The riff I do end up playing all the time is 'It's Not Right,' that is just undeniable, pure catchiness.
Well, I haven't tried it but Roland have done the SH-101 Boutique. And since a 202 is basically a 101 with a more advanced sequencer, I think the Boutique version is pretty close!
I had a mc 202 since twenty years and bought a sh01 for replacement ; the sequencer is great and patch memory are pretty useful... but the boutique hasn’t the sound , too bad ,the form factor was great , keep loving the 202 😍

The most impressing thing about this video is that you have managed to still have a piece of gear you bought in the eighties!
It's easy when you're OLD heheh... I still have my original TR-808 and Moog Rogue from '82 and '83!
Thank you, lovely overview.
Ahhh, thank you! Love your vids too! :-D
ALSO - I do live music stuff, would you like to collaborate live sometime? Could be a huge, huge, fun mess! :-)
I enjoyed this video, thanks for making it!
Thank you for watching!
Its a very useful bit of kit well demonstrated .
Thank you! :-D

microprocessor doesn't mess with the sound at all. what you talkin?

I KNOW!! It's that *THUMP* of the cycle that scares me... arghh...
Watching the first video that came up about the MC-202, I heard the voice and thought "is this Jyoti Mishra?". Checked the channel and yes, it is!
haha, how do you know my voice that well??

SH09 is a beast, too!
Hey great vid! Informative and nostalgic, especially the masterpiece the end!
Thank you for watching! :-)
I was literally listening to the Vince Clarke remix of Wanted when I stumbled across this video. Small (synth) world.
Haha - WELCOME!
i really love you video. thx, much love from detroit.
Thank you! :-)
You can change what accent is affecting (shift + upper C#, i think). Options are Amplifier, FIlter or FA for both. Great little machine.

Me too! If I close my eyes, I can still see Manic Miner and Jetpac screens from when they were burned into my retinas decades ago... 😂😂😂

this is so good!
Thank you!
I'm really glad you're active on UA-cam. Do you ever use reddit? You should join us on the synthesizers subreddit.

love this! thank you!
Thank *you* for watching! :-)
Could you try to make the lead sound and look if its the same ? could be a cool video, if it would be exactly the same :)
Is that Swelling Itching Brain form Devo I can hear?

Do you reckon there would be a Roland Boutique of the mc202

boloiide the boutique is VERY close.
Can’t you clear a sequence without rebooting???
i want to buy one
Hm it somehow sounds for me like the main theme synth in Daft Punks Da Funk.
Great video!
Anyone who likes this instrument should check out Alessandro Cortini. He did Sonno and Risveglio on this, and they are really good.
Thanks for that! 😎
@@JyotiMishra yeah this was a real joy to watch. Really nice work. I learned a ton.
You sound like a nice man. Lol idk what I'm saying
Yes, I know. It's your voice. You've got a warm, peaceful voice. Anyway, thx for the vid
@@tirelipoinpom5561 Thank you!

Twist....he has bodies in his back yard :0....nah he seems nice enough lol
why they drop the noise slider ?
No noise on this one?
I knew your name was familiar...... White Town.
Sold mine for £80, thought I'd done really well out of it.
Well, if you don't use gear, sell it! That being said, I saw these going for silly money a while back.
