- 2 days of lively off-wind sailing from Jamaica to Grand Cayman.
With Covid-19 starting to cause concern, we departed Jamaica and headed for the medical security of Grand Cayman, which we hoped to explore before any restrictions were applied. We left Montego Bay on a fast beam reach, aiming to arrive in Cayman Brac the following morning.
But as we approached, the sea-state increased and aligned itself with the island. The heavy waves rolling down both sides of the island meant there was no tenable anchorage or mooring to be taken and we had no choice but sail right passed both Cayman Brac and Little Cayman and continue a further 100 miles west, to Grand Cayman.
It was a rolly downwind sail and we arrived late in the evening to George Town where we took a mooring ball. The following day, as we checked-in, we discovered Cayman would close its borders to arriving yachts the following day. We were lucky, we were in!
Super top quality sailing as always. Thanks for sharing and highlighting more places of interest to visit by yacht.
first comment award :) Thanks Nick.
catching up on vids have not watched yet. my favorite sailing vids. Thnk you
Just lovely 😁👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Glenn and Oana, thanks for sharing. Always refreshing to watch!
It was certainly refreshing to get out to sea and good sailing again .... well, for me anyway. Not so sure the same for Oana!
A beautiful couple , beautiful swimming !!! Thanks.
Well .... yes ... Oana is undoubtedly beautiful and I guess that makes the average between us pretty good :)
Thank you for your ego boosting comment !
I really liked this video! Good explanations and use of the chart to explain your position. Made things easy to follow! Such a beautiful boat!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video! I am partial to your sailing scenes; especially sail handling, etc. Cloudy Bay and your first mate are as beautiful as ever!
Thanks for that Chuck! Will be more sailing in 3 videos time, when we take the 1200 nm passage up to Annapolis in the US.
You got that rite Glen. Luckily you have made it to Grand Cayman Island just before lock down.
Yes Eric, it was a good move and the right timing. After Oana got pretty badly ill in Jamaica (not Covid) we realized it was not a good place to be for medical situations.
The best sailing video on the tube!👌
Wow, thanks!
Top video👏🏼 as always👍🏽. Good to see the Commodore - on-deck in the Command Chair, and commenting; while the Captain does the navigating & sailing🖖🏽...!
Dats why she's d'Commodore :)
@@SailCloudyBay Touche`...!
Very Nice Video
Thanks Rasheed
Best quality UA-cam I've watched this week.
rightsideup I hope that means you watched more than one! :)
Assuming you did (!) thanks for the nice comments.
Sail Cloudy Bay An embarrassingly amount more.
Glenn and Oana: Sorry to see that Covid 19 put you in lockdown. Blue skies & blue water are a gift in these troubled times. Thanks for making us so happy sharing your memories. Great adventure!
Rick , yes we were frankly very spoiled during lock down. We really could not have had it better. Next couple of videos will show. Beautiful water, coral below us, safe country, excellent food shopping and good shelter. We were graced for sure.
Yet another Fantastic episode glad you got cheeked in safe and sound. Look forward to more of your amazing adventures. (Jasmine)
Thanks Jasmine. So glad you enjoyed sailing along with us.
Thank you for another lovely video/editing. I am always mesmerized by the sounds Cloudy permits you to capture. Even thought I knew what to expect for the journey, I adore GC & was excited to see you arrive. Looking forward to the next video!! PS: Hope all is well with you & your loved ones.
Yeah we are all good thanks, all well. We spent 2 months in Grand Cayman and had to cancel our plans to visit Cuba and Mexico. Ended up hi-tailing it back to USA for the hurricane season. Next 2 videos will capture Grand Cayman. first one before total lock down and 2nd one all about boat projects as we killed time on lockdown. Yes, me too, I love the sound of her ploughing through the water.
Awesome
Interesting, I love the music used when you navigate (the drone too)! The Commodore, has a fantastic sense of humor, just like Lord Nelson, is brave and commands the fleet from her quarters, No doubt, Commander(007) Glen of CB, has an easy life! Eh eh eh eh! The plague coming from China, it doesn't want to end... Thank you for the hard work of filming, editing and sharing with us.
king regards.
I agree ... Oana does subtley command her Captain !
@@SailCloudyBay Perfect partners in crime, as they say! Eh eh eh! Keep safe.
beautiful journey, beautiful boat ! love it ! you make me want to sail too !
Very nice the way you describe the passage before !
Thanks. I think it helps set the scene. But more importantly, when we re-view these memories from our rocking chairs in a few decades, it will help us remember what we were doing .... and why we were doing it!
Sail Cloudy Bay agree !
Salut vous tank you vidéo magnifique super
Picture perfect Caribbean sailing
It really was a wonderful off-wind sail. The only uncomfortable part was that big and disorganised swell as we approached Cayman Brac. There was not enough wind to pin the mainsail out (boom kept swinging in board) so we had to go with genoa only which meant the boat was not pinned down in the rolling swell. Unfortunately it made Oana sick and she never really shook it off till we arrived in Cayman. She really suffers sometimes :(
Great filming Glenn, seasick watching from the couch! Life is different right now, travelling through your videos. Dreaming of one day being back on the beach in the Caribbean.
Ooops, sorry about that! Yes, beach days will return and we will appreciate them all the more I think.
Sail Cloudy Bay don’t be sorry, your filming is realistic and gives the real feel of sailing.
Great sailing - I've decided that you're boat is quite quick through the water! I can put up with the rolly polly downwind compared to beating up into a similar swell. Beautiful footage as usual, I do look forward to these videos.
Yeah I dont mind a good down wind sail either, and that was certainly a good one. But Oana was a bit fed up from being thrown around in her sleep the night before.
great footage thanks guys!
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent vid ya'll.
Glad you enjoyed it
Outstanding edit 🤙
Thank you 🙌
Cheers guys.
Glad you enjoyed the sail with us
Lovely...Orea in North Georgia, USA
Magnificent sailing ⛵️ beautiful blue waters, but you will probably need LFS
LFS? You mean life jacket? Thanks for your concern, but there was really no danger of either of us falling over board in those relatively easy conditions
Sail Cloudy Bay no sorry I meant Looking Forward Sonar
Ah ha ..... yes, I would love a forward looking sonar, especially for when coming in between reefs. Not sure how it could have been useful on that deep water passage though.
Sail Cloudy Bay you are right but you may need it in the future, I see that you mostly sail around shallow water
Fantastic Sailing !!! Very natural words from every day of Sailing !! And now?? How are you doing with Cuarentene ?? In Jamaica ?? Greetings from Buenos Aires |Argentine
Hi Mario,
We are now safely at home in Bucharest, Romania where we will stay until October. From Cayman we sailed back to USA and put the boat safely ashore away from the hurricane zone. Next few videos show our time in Cayman and the 1200 mile sailing back to USA. Our Blog, where we put detailed daily updates, can be found on www.sailcloudybay.com
@@SailCloudyBay Ok Many Thanks for your answer. Please Carefully for you, your wife and your Boat "Cloudy Bay" Beatifull design. I´ll get your Blog. Chau !!! Mario
Great episode guys! Oana's narration just keeps getting better and it's always been great! No cutter use on this passage?
thanks Dale, Oana will certainly appreciate that.
No, we only really use the cutter when a heavily reefed genoa is still too much. For a down wind sailing that would be well over 35 Kts of wind. And for a reach or on the wind we would probably use if the wind was consistently above 27kts ..... or if we just wanted a slower more comfortable sail.
Cheers! 🤟🏼
Hey let us know when you get here? The economy is reopened for the most part!! Be careful though, the water between Cayman brac and grand Cayman can be rough.. anyway Welcome to the Cayman islands
ETA: lol sorry didn't see this was in March
Yeah, sorry we are long gone by now! We departed 15-May. We felt very safe in Cayman during the initial global Covid outbreak. It was likely the best place to be in the Caribbean.
Nick of time entry for shutdown - Hope you enjoyed the stay!
Michael. We had a great stay in Cayman thanks. It was actually nice to slow down and do nothing for a few weeks. We could not have picked nicer surroundings, and convenience for supermarkets. And Cayman dealt with the CV crisis very efficiently. I take my hat off to them.
@@SailCloudyBay just heard tonight, our Boarders in Cayman are now remaining closed till October 1st. All tests for the last few days are negative and we are not taking any chances. No one is in hospital and no deaths other than the Italian pax who came off the cruise ship. Look forward to seeing you soon in our waters
missed out, should have gone to little cayman!
We would-of if we could-of but we couldn't!
Cayman only allows check-in at Cayman Brac or Grand Cayman. Not allowed to go to Little Cayman until you have checked in. Our aim was to check in in Cayman Brac and visit both the small eastern islands. But as we passed by Cayman Brac, the authorities told us we could not moor or anchor and that we must continue to Grand Cayman. We were very disappointed. But in actual fact, we found out later that they had already closed the smaller islands to any entry. Not even people from Grand Cayman were allowed to do there - excepting essential services.
Oana would always be a "happy bunny". She would never get upset. What a lovely temperament you both have. May I please ask you whether you have got together relatively recently or have you always been together?
Howard Butler yes when she’s a happy bunny she is perfect. And when she’s not I don’t get the camera out :)
We’ve been together over ten years now, and married 5. It just gets better and better.
I like your video format and camera shoot, before boat life what you guys use to do?
Hi Umesh. Prior to taking retirement, we both worked for an international oilfield service company called Schlumberger. Our last posting was in Dubai.
Another great chapter with the majority of content, unusual for most sailing channels. of sailing 😱.
'As of July 13, there are 203 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (201 recovered) and one associated fatality in the Cayman Islands. Further international spread of the virus is expected over the coming days and weeks' Wikip.
So will you put us out of our misery and tell us whether you 'escaped', and where to, or do you know Grand Cayman very, very, v e r y well? ⛵🇦🇺
Ahh, Dilligaf. Sorry but you will have to watch further episodes :) Alternatively, if you cannot wait for the film, all is revealed in the up-to-date book (blog), available for free on www.sailcloudybay.com !
Yes, the one fatality was from a cruise liner. Once they got rid of the cruise liners and secured their borders, they managed to get the infections under control very efficiently and professionally. Quite a contrast to what we saw later in the USA in May.
if you don't love the sound of sailing on a reach or down wind you are not a sailor.
Why do you think you manage to sail without all the repairs and dramas you see of others......I believe it is because of a combination of the fact you actually afford and that in the off season you are super diligent, correct? Love your stuff btw!
Tim, that is an interesting question. Here is what I think.
Firstly, I believe some You Tubers like to over show breakages and dramas and may even exaggerate a bit for the audience. Our videos are made primarily for our memories, so we have no need to do that. The other factor is that my career started as an engineer performing pretty complex operations on oil wells. We were dealing with explosives, radioactive sources, extreme high pressure and many other elements that, with mistakes, could easily escalate into a lethal situation. So I was always on my toes making sure equipment and the team worked flawlessly and kept very alert to potential problems. So while I'm now significantly more relaxed than this previous paranoia, I still have a healthy fear of problems and their potential for escalation - especially given its only Oana and I, alone and often totally off-grid. I'm kind of the opposite to the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" mindset. Even the slightest sign of a problem with any equipment, I rip into it and don,t stop until its back to perfect working condition. And yes, this does cost money .... but it saves expensive and poorly timed breakages, where one small issue can easily lead to another and another. This has led me, after 4 years, to know pretty much every inch of Cloudy Bay and her many operating systems.
Yes, we do a lot of work each time we come back to the boat before re-launch. But to be honest, on average I probably do 2 or more hours maintenance-related tasks each and every day when we are cruising too. And I think its the same for most diligent cruisers who value a smooth ride.
But even with everything working perfectly, shit still happens with poor decisions. You will see a good example of this in a couple of videos when we passage back to USA. We have an accidental crash gybe, which destroys the mainsheet system leaving the boom swinging wildly. A very dangerous situation to get under control in a bad sea state.
And lastly, we don't often manage to capture many dramas on video, but we do document each and every issue we have in our daily blog, which is posted on our website sailcloudybay.com.
Sorry for the long answer ... You touched a piece of my heart and I kind of got carried away there!
@@SailCloudyBay I love the way your mind works Glen.
As always, your video was entertaining, educational, and fun to watch. Thank you. Eight years ago a friend had his 50' sailboat docked at the Montego Bay Yacht Club, which is nearby your anchorage. Did you get an opportunity to visit it? Anyway, we used the yacht club as our base and for the next ten days, we sailed the northern and western end of Jamaica. I had flown into Montego Bay during the Christmas holidays. Your view of Montego Bay and the surrounding area brought back wonderful memories. Moored next to us at the yacht club was an 82' Swan; she was owned by a wealthy Canadian family who also owns an estate in Jamaica, just west of Montego Bay. We friended the captain and enjoyed touring the beautiful yacht; we rang in the new year on board her! Here is a link to a UA-cam video that I made about my trip to Jamaica...hope you enjoy it. ua-cam.com/video/UqodZz1L1ZQ/v-deo.html
Hi Dick, Thanks for the comment. Yes, we cruised and explored the north coast of Jamaica. Our last 3 published videos cover that (Port Antonio, Ocho Rios, and last one: Montego Bay). YOu can find them on our UA-cam channel. THanks for the youtube link.
Are you still in the Cayman Islands?
Steff. No. We were there 2 months but needed to go north out of hurricane zone. Sailed 1200 miles to Chesapeake and we are now back home in Bucharest. Plan to set off again in the fall and sail to Panama - depending on Covid situation.
What happened to the journey through the Panama into the pacific on your channel/ you tube.

👍👍👍😜
Attention to all the ships in the Caribbean storm Gonzalo can become a hurricane and may hit Jamaica Cayman Islands and Cuba. including Mexico. Take actions
Thanks Juan Carlos for the heads up. But we are long-gone from that area now.
@@SailCloudyBay Cloudy Bay, Delos and Sailing Doodles all in the same 10 square miles! Nicely out of the hurricane zone. Well....Sandy said no that idea a few years back.
All the best.
3.6kt is my average cruising speed :-)
Our yacht before this was a J22 in Dubai. In their light winds I doubt we even averaged 3.6kts! Compared to that, Cloudy feels like a freight train!

CCP virus time in cayman.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥳
It was a very good place to be .....
Top quality video with tremendous information but naration by your partner seems coming out of very very sick person, sorry to say but very difficult to absorb.
An unusual comment I must say. Especially given most people usually compliment Oana's voice and narrative. English isn't her first language ( though she speaks it better than me! ), maybe you are not used to foreign accents?
It was a thumbs down on that comment - Sorry! Oana is PERFECT in every way.
@@howardbutler6523 might be perfect for you but not for everyone or it's Oana commenting herself with changed ID. Sorry & thumbs down to your commet.
