Tape Measure Hack / Trick

  • Did a lot of renovations during the summer and one of the most frustrating experience was using the tape measure on a vertical wall, especially while on a ladder.
    So I made a simple pencil holder that worked well, but had a few limitations, like the pencil was hard to be replaced or sharpened and also it needed a pointer for precise measurement.
    In this video I'm making an improved version of it, from some scrap square tubing. It has all the features I needed, accurate pointer, release screw for the pencil and it can also use markers or metal scribers.

      Fun fact: The yeti is based off of Lenny from "Of Mice and Men" who was large and strong but had the intellect of a child. He would often ask his only friend, George, to tell him about their pipe dream of a farm with lots of rabbits which Lenny would hold and pet. But Lenny had no understanding of his strength and the fragility of things and would have crushed and killed the bunnies like the Yeti almost does to Bugs.

    I've seen these out there being sold, but this DIY version is pretty top notch... just need to find a cool way to add the belt clip back on, maybe? Though, I don't think I ever clip my tape onto anything, so maybe not 🤓 👍🏼

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  8 років тому

      I never used the belt clip either, but it can be easily reattached using the central screw. Maybe with a bit of double sided tape underneath, to prevent it from twisting.

    Am I the only one who winced when you used your vernier caliper as a scriber? Its a precision measuring tool not a marking gauge! Top marks for the hack tho.

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  7 років тому +14

      You're not the only one, but honestly I'm really surprised about this. It's a cheap set of calipers, probably paid like 5 bucks for it and I've been abusing it like that for ten years and it's fine. I have a digital one for precision work, but I almost never use it, since this one is good enough. This kind of "protect your calipers" attitude is most likely based on education a few decades ago in machine shops, when calipers were expensive and precision was important. But for my needs this works just fine.

      Your quite right my respect for tooling was taught as apprentice toolmaker. I still have the tool kit and chest I made during that time. Its a shame tool quality and maintenance of same has dropped to an almost use once and throw away level. Upsets me when I see a plumber pry a floorboard up with a cheap chisel...guess we are what we are. Keep the clips coming .

      When you modify a tool for a new purpose it is still a tool. calipers make excellent very accurate scribes. I have one dedicated for just that purpose.

    That was my idea. I did that 10 years ago and I thought I was onto something that would bre an obvious commercial success. So I went looking to see if it had already been thought of and I found a website that sold innovative tools and I found there was a tape measure with a clear plastic sleeve that went over the tape and which was used to mark the wood with a sharp metal pin. I still have my modified tape measure.

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  8 років тому

      Yea, there are several patents similar to this design, yet not one ever made it to market. Tape measures have been around for so long it's only natural that lots of people thought of this.

    Amazing vid man, tnx for sharing it. I'm gonna try it out with aluminium just because I have some of them around and I think it can be handle with a little bit more precise, let's say that instead of a pointy mark, I want to make a square hole to better pin point or dial the exact measure, like the ruler in some table saw's that have a plastic piece that has a red line in that acts like a cross hair to bette target your measure. What's left to do is maintain the pencil's tip sharp to make a precise mark. Tnx bro!!! ✏️ 😀

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  8 років тому +1

      Another thing that creates imprecision with this holder is the angle you keep the tape measure body when you make the mark. This is good for construction and framing, where one millimeter off is no big deal. For precision I'd use a metal ruler and marking knife.

  • @JustaSimplefact
    @JustaSimplefact 7 років тому

    Based on another video I just watched, this would also be ideal to be used in tandem with the screw/nail slot on the front hook, for use as a compass for drawing arcs and circles.

    pretty cool...but...when you demonstrate using the finished product...you mark at "20", "30" and "40"....but the actual pencil mark is well off the mark...except for the "30". Does that mean you need to move your pointed indicator?? If you had created a thin rabbit grove where the plate screws into the tape measure, it would allow a bit of side to side travel to adjust alignment..then tighten down the screws. Similar to how the markers on table saw fences allow adjustment to the tape.

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  7 років тому +4

      It's mostly camera angles, 30 is spot on cause it's in the middle, but the tape is quite acurate, 1 mm off at most. The demo was shot at 3 AM, me watching though the camera screen and with the tripod and a light between my arms, so yea, not the ideal situation for precision.
