REX! hope youre doing well. are you still offering training? how do i get ahold of you if you are.
This series should be a DVD box set...
I agree
I have the vhs set still
1 minute of angle is simply 1/60th of a degree. :-) Its just an angular measurement that just so happens to work out to be approximately 1 inch @ 100yds or 10 inches @1000 yds (approximately). I have a video on MOA and Mils, if you want the full explanation.
2020 and im still going through this trying to get into long range. Absolutly loving it! thanks for walking through all this stuff and clearifying so much, and adding in your thoughts and experience with long range.
I can not believe your videos dont have more views. You really know your stuff.Cheers mate and well done on all of your informative videos.
I've been looking forward to the optic vid for some time now. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for your well informed commentary and video's. You are a credit to our sport and generous enough to share your knowledge. I don't visit your channel often but when i do i am always in learn mode. Cheers from Australia
Lumenmunster Thanks, sir!
You are just a brilliant guy. I mean it. These videos are really good :)
Thanks Rex appreciate the rapid response keep up the amazing work man!
Rex you are the man. I recently purchased Magpuls DVDs on long range shooting "The Art of the Precision Rifle" and although I loved the series, I think I have learned more from your Sniper 101 series. I also didn't pay squat for your series. Thanks for answering my questions.
Late on viewing but never the less awesome videos. I'm barely on 12 of 89 videos of this playlist and I gotta say I never would have thought of most of the material. Great insights and I've even recommend others to watch. This playlist has given me a better understanding of rifles and sniper/long range shooting knowledge I wasn't able to obtain while I was in service. Have a dvd of this material? Lol. Great vids and hope to see additional videos posted on your channel in the future!
Just a reminder, if you really appreciate Rexs vids watch at least 30 seconds of the ad so he gets revenue 👍🏼I appreciate the work you put in
Wow, sweet deal man. I always liked the .280. That's a good cartridge.
Good videos, thanks. I enjoy your matter-of-factness.
Great series, God speed to you!
Depends on your budget and application. Short answer: For < $500, use SWFA SS10X with MRAD turrets. For $1000, pick up a US Optics ST-10 with MRAD EREK knob. For over $1500, S&B PMII or USO SN-3.
My Optics Selection video is next on the list - I will go into much detail on your question
Peace
Thank you very much for this very comprehensive spot on series. Weeding through all the as you put "my uncle says" opinions on the web is over. My prayers are answered and my wallet is a little fatter from not wasting money and time on unnecessary or poor purchases.
Thanks again brother
Excellent information !
Excellent video !
5⭐
Well done,thanks👍
I have a Ruger M77 MK2 in 300 WSM. I've bedded the stock, free floated the barrel and had a trigger job. Its my deer hunting rifle but its shooting 0.5 MOA groups! Love my rifle!!
Medic1152 > I think 300 wsm is one of the most accurate cartridges out there.
Depends on how much you like recoil - I guess. My first rifle was a .375 H&H Mag and I used to take it gopher shooting all the time in high school, so I am pretty recoil insenitive. But, yes: a 6.5lb 7mm Rem mag will buck very very hard and will most likely suck to lay down and shoot all day.
Dude you got your shit together.
Such a wealth of knowledge
This is pretty cool, that scope is catching my eye
No. With the 1:12 twist you will be limited to 168s, thus in order to keep up with the ballistic perfromnace of the 175s with shorter barrels, you will need that extra MV that the 26" barrel provides. We kept the 26" barrel on my wife's Remington Varmint .308. The reduced blast signature and recoil that the longer heavier barrel provides are actually quite nice when laying down shooting the rifle all day. Harmonics aren't a problem with the heavy 26" if you find the right load. Hope this helps.
That would be an excellent place for it. Thanks again for all your hard work. Your building an excellent body of work that will be timeless.
Thanks for watching, sir.
great video
Hey Rex, really love your videos and I've learned a lot. One question I have is if you have done any testing with the Savage model 12 LRP? There is very little information on this gun out there. I'm considering getting it in 6.5 Creedmoor and I haven't seen you talk to this cartridge in any regard other than when referring to the Norma in your cartridge selection video. Aside from long range shooting, what range would this cartridge still be capable at fro lethality on elk and on defend the ranch.
This will be my first attempt at getting into long range and I am looking for a decent out of the box gun and caliber to make sure I enjoy the sport before building a custom. Your thoughts, opinions, concerns on gun or caliber much appreciated.
I always like those CZs for some reason. They are a little different, but they make a nice rifle in my opinion.
Thanks for getting back to me. I see, it was a good time to ask as it seems you were about to explain MOA in the next few videos ;) Seems really important to the adjustments of the scope, like one tic could be quite the difference at range, with 5 minutes or there abouts. Pretty simple equations though once you get the just of it, i suppose. Which I'm still getting... right on.
Would love more information on the mercury gadget you mentioned for reducing recoil. =)
No problem, bud. Glad to be of service :-)
Great value. They usually shoot very well.
@TiborasaurusRex What diameter (at breach and at muzzle ) barrel are you using on your surgeon rifle?
As a newer shooter, I love your lessons. I also hope that some day you will make a step by step video on duracoating.
Hi Rex, just got back from a LGS. They had a "used" custom there. I put it on layaway. The action is a Savage 110, barrel is a stainless Shilen Med heavy bench with a 1/8" twist hand lapped chambered in 280 Rem w/McMillan stock and a Harris Bipod. Turns out I know the "old guy" who had it made for him last year before dear season. One box through it. He planned on going out west with it, but put it up for sale on consignment cause it's heavy.$500.00!!!!!!
Remington 700 Police. Availible in .308, .300WM, and now .338LM. No frills, just what a guy needs to send them on down their narrow path to the target.
Thank you, sir.
I am going with 308 for this particular rifle. It will kind of be a multipurpose rifle. One I can use for whitetail deer and also my SHTF rifle. So ammo availability is a key factor for me. I had a Savage 308 before and I truly loved shooting the thing. My plinker now that I practice my fundamentals with is Savage model 93 in 22LR. Very accurate little rifle. I love the accutrigger system. Thanks for responding and taking so much time to help us all become better shooters.
I have an M77MKIV that I bought in 1989 and, with significant throat erosion, it still shoots 1.25 MOA. Best groups I ever got, with custom loaded cartridges, were 5/8 MOA. I actually prefer Rem700s for factory grade production rifles though.
Yep. Your all right. You just earned "Old guy" respect. :)Started your series from the beginning. It became obvious early on that you know your shit. And in this one you showed me that your not the type to have to prove it.Thanks for doing this series. Looking forward to geeking out on the rest of them. lol!
Excellent overview of the available rifle options at different price points. My shooting partner and I have made the mistake of looking at barrel rifling with our gunsmith using a bore scope. Is is bad to appalling even in the vaunted Rem 700 5R but I guess that is what copper fouling rectifies. Our solution has been custom Hart barrels where the rifling is pristine. An expensive option but it removes a lot of variables from the accuracy equation. Looking forward to part 2 and especially to you
Thanks, dude.
Yep, The Handi taught me more than one thing. I used to be a bit of a equipment snob with tikka continentals and brownings but that $250 gun shoots very nearly as well plus I can carve the stock and brass tack it :)
If you correctly adjust for all the variables, this should not be a problem at all for the 7mm Mag. Be sure to stay tuned and get all the details of how to accomplish that.
Thank you, very much :-)
I have a very similar rifle to the 7mm mag model 700. The cold shot is always slightly up and right, then the remainders hit point of aim. What can I do for that?
Thankyou for your SME opinion. I will make sure to maintain warranty. I've also heard the AR-10s haven't had any problems but like you say it may take awhile. Enjoy studying your course daily!
Blessings
I am aware that some of the 110 ba rifles had chamber issues, but other than that, the ba's are reported to be pretty good shooters.
I am loving this series on Sniper 101. Excellent!
I'm interested in the semi auto rifle over the bolt action rifle specifically the AR-10 rifle. I'm going to go with the Schmidt and Bender Mil Dot Optics. Very good information!
Best Regards
Ed
Rex is the Winchester model 70 in .375 H&H considered a long range rifle, or is it only for
large game at fairly close quarters? By close quarters I mean 200-300 or so yards
I have a Savage model 10 .308 with the 24in barrel. Played around with it, awesome stuff with my loads. Still sub MOA at 200. Only load it seems to like is 168gr Hornady match, Ramshot TAC powder with CCI BR2 primers and Lake city brass.
The Continue to Next Video link in the video does not work, nor does the video appear on your page. Does the video exist? Also, a search on UA-cam for "Long Range Cartridge Dynamics & Cartridge Selection" turns up nothing. Just FYI.
what are your thoughts on a savage 110 ba .300 win mag?
.243 Winchester would be a great choice if reduced recoil is a medical priority. Any well respected modern bolt action should work fine - Iook at the Ruger M77 VT or a Remington SPS Varmint. Optics? SWFA SS10X would work great. Spend the rest on a custom bedding job, lapping the bolt lug, a nice bipod, and good peripheral equipment.
Wow, excellent choice! Keep me posted how it works!
Yes, that will be a problem for sure. You only want it touching at the rings. You need to get it a little higher.
TiborasaurusRex what do you think about the Remington 700 Target Tactical for long range shooting? I'm considering this rifle, perhaps paired with a U.S. Optics ST-10. Thoughts? Thanks
outstanding videos, I'm just getting into long range shooting and have learned tons from them.
I just purchased an AR platform in 6.5 creedmoor. Its got a 20 JP heavy barrel, bolt, etc. on a Mega Arms upper and lower, 20 inch barrel, with an IOR Valdada scope 3-18x42, and I'm looking at adding a compensator to it.
I am wondering your thoughts on this set up ??? I'm assuming it is capable of 1000 yards, curious how far you think is possible with this set up... 1200, 1400, Mile ????
Great vid as always. Man i didn't know how old you were but buying guns in the 90's says you are old lol.
@Dodge Mustang old fart😂😂😂😂
I have a Remington Police in .308 that I bought several years ago. It shoots less than 1/2moa at 100yrds, when I do my job. I want a Police in 7mm Magnum but can't find one at this time. Might I ask where you got yours?
Hey, i was hoping to get the remington 700 tactical, either in .223 or .308. I would be using it for target shooting, and varmint (prairie dog) and cyote hunting, however i usually have a rest to use... usually... (Also deer hunting, but i will go prone) I would also like it to be able to touch out to around 1000 yards pretty consistently. Do you think the .308 or .223 will be better, and do you think this rifle can do this stuff, i know the weight may be a factor after glass etc, but i also have rests/support most of the time. (if i get the .308 i would get it in aac-sd for the 1:10 twist, plus threaded barrel.
Rex what kind of issues has there been with the accu-trigger? Mine has worked good and I realy like it.
I would think it should work fine. I have seen many factory barrels in sporting contours shoot
They offer very similar external performance. The RUM case is built on a 404 Jeffrey if I remember correctly and the Lapua is based on a .416 Rigby with the case thickened significantly a redesigned for higher pressures. The Lapua brass is much heavier and much more consistent, but they will cost a lot more as well. Both would be fine, but the Lapua case design and brass quality may offer slightly improved precision capabilities over the RUM.
Question for you Rex.
First, thank you so much for the videos they are amazing and I have learned so much its not even funny.
Second, I am saving up for a rifle. I have narrowed my choices down to two options I think. A Remington 7mm Mag. Or a 6.5 Creedmoor. A lot is written about the Remington however the Creedmoor seems to be a highly up and coming rifle round. What is your professional or unprofessional opinion on this gun? Which would you choose?
Thanks,
Ben
watching these videos makes me want my new barrel for my savage model 12 single shot! I'm getting a 26" 1:8 5r 7mm barrel chambered in 7mm stw. I'm hoping this will be a good long range rig. I'm looking to shoot the Berger 195's and the new Hornady 180 eld.
Certainly. Reliability can suffer sometimes. Beware of fine dust and sand, especially when the trigger is over-lubricated - this can lead to less than reliable performance. Extreme cold weather can do the same thing if freezing moisture is present in the wrong places. Also, it can get hung up on certain kinds of fabric from your gloves if operating in ECW.
Check out a Remington Sendero in a 7mm Magnum. That would be a real nice set up right out the box - wouldn't have to mess with the stock or barrel.
How'd you do the digi camo on the savage 10fp?
Dude, these videos are great. I'm buying a savage model 10 pc this week in 308. Ill be using your recommendations in optics. Can't wait to play with llong range shooting. Load work ups are in my future.
Just picked up a Remington 700 XCR in .338 Lapua.... cant wait to get some optics on it :-)
I would error on the side of more weight, for a long range rifle. You will be shooting it a bit to get everything set up, so you don't want to hate the thing due to excessive recoil.
Thanks for the great vids, I have not watched all of them yet. I just started long range shooting and I am currently using my hunting rifle a Tikka T3X ultralight 300 winmag. Would like to know your thoughts on that.
It can, if everything works out just right. Although a light rifle can be very very accurate if the harmonics and barrel whip are consistent, heavy guns are generally more desirable for precision shooting as they are more likely to have less harmonic variations due to increased rigidity.
Actually the slower twist rate can be advantageous beyond a certain distance. As a bullet passes through the descending leg of its trajectory at extreme ranges, too much spin can become increasingly problematic. Long, skinny, low-drag bullets like the A-Max have increased tractability at long ranges as long as they are not gyroscopically overstabilized. So, yes - the varmint twists can actually work fine - if maintaining dynamic stability at extreme ranges is the goal.
Watching your whole series and you're talking about the barrel touching one side of the side of the stock.
I have a wood stock. I'm shooting a Rugar M77 Mark ii from the 90's. I love my rifle and would love to keep it for many years to come.
My barrel is touching one side of the stock. I'm purchasing a new scope this year and retiring my Bausch and Lomb elite 3000 3-9x40.
Since I'm purchasing a new scope, I think this would be a good time to get my rifle tuned up. Any suggestions on basic repairs I should be looking to do?
You talk about glass bedding the stock, which I think I'll do so I can get a more rigid shot. Get the allignment fixed so it's not rubbing, this would be called Free floating?
And I think I want to get the stock re-finished, would this cause any issues?
I'm a good shot and hunter but I don't have a lot of experience with the science. You're video series is really helping me out.
As of late, my shooting range varies between 50-500 yards but I'm looking to push that further to maybe 750 ydrs.
Hope this finds you well,
All the best,
A
Both are very nicely made rifles. Either should work great :-)
Rex do you think the 280AI would make a good long range caliber??
What’s your thoughts on a ruger american 30-06 with vortex crossfire II 3-9x40. I have watched your other vids and understand it isn’t going to work for super long range and being second focal. Just want to know your thoughts on it and what the potential is.
Thank you for your wealth of knowledge, I’ve learned so much
What do you think about the Savage 110 BA
Hey tiborasaurusrex would a Remington model 700 long range in 7mm magnum be a good long range gun for a beginning gun
Thanks for videos. If someone learns to fiberglass they could get a rough wood stock blank carve to fit. Sand to 200 grit than bed and coat with fiberglass or carbon fiber. Then bed posts for screws.
Hi Rex I have started to shoot long range target and I wanted to know what rifle/scope combo you would recommend for 300-1000m. I currently have a 223 Howa but that barely gets me out to 600 because of slow twist. Also what caliber would you suggest taking into account I have a shoulder injury that makes .308 painful after about 20+ shots? (usually shoot about 80 per shoot) I have a budget of £1200 ($1800) to spend on a rifle and scope. any suggestions would be great. keep up the videos! Thanks
Hey Rex or anyone else, what would your opinion be on a weatherby vanguard series 2 synthetic chambered in 7mm-08 rem with glass bedding and a free floated barrel with the falcon 4-14x44 optic?
hey how do you feel about the Weatherby Vanguard S2?
Yeah, a good Hart fixes allot of it. I'm not sure where to put my "cold bore" video in this series, probably in with the advanced ballistics portion. Should be real helpful.
Rex I purchased a Remington 700 Varmint 1in12 with a 26” heavy barrel in 308. The rifle is a little on the heavy side and a friend of mine who is a long range shooter offered to cut down the barrel and recrown it for me. Would you recommend cutting it down? I know it would save weight, their would be less harmonics, and the rifle would be more maneuverable. But, is it worth the hassle? If so, what length do you recommend cutting it down to? Hoping to reach out to a 1000 with 175 grainers. Thanks
I thouched this subject in a question in your video about bore barrels etc. But when it comes to make your barrel free float. If you were to have a synthetic stock, would it still help alot with the free float configuration harmonics wise, or is it still possible to tune it to perfection ? The reason that I ask is that I have ordered a remington 750 carbine, and (mostly for looks, but aswell for accuracy and because it has integrated rails) going to buy a free floating fore end grip for it. Or can you just as easy fine tune the harmonics to make good consistant groups even if the barrel is not freefloating (with a synthetic stock that is) ?
Best regards !
Machinshin The main key to tuning is for the harmonic signature to be as consistent as possible - there are two way to accomplish this...
1) Free float - nothing touching the barrel
2) Bed the barrel channel completely so that there is complete contact between the stock and barrel to prevent inconsistent resonance between the two.
Tuning the barrel is possible either way you go, as long as it has CONSISTENT contact with the stock from shot to shot.
If the barrel is only "sort of" bedded, you run the risk of erratic harmonic anomalies presenting themselves. This is what makes big problems. Tuning a barrel is not really possible if the harmonic signature is changing from shot cycle to shot cycle. So I would either try to free float it, or glass bed the whole thing. :-)
Does this help, sir?
Oh yes it helps =) I actually saw your video explaining this today. So now I know what its about =) I will go for the free float fore end grip since this rifle comes with a 2 piece stock. Thanks alot for the reply. And as always Your videos are SUPER. Only problem is they are so dense in information that my head hurts ;) Keep up the good work !
New to long range. I built a Grendel AR15 with a 28” 1-8 5R. I’ve only put 20 rounds through it, but I managed to get exactly a 1 inch group while zeroing the scope at 200yds. I used 123 grain Hornady black match eld off the shelf. Idk how good that is?
I;ve seen them do great thing, nice rifle 4 sure.
I like tikka just fine. They usually have a nice smooth operating action and a are usually a pretty good shooting rifle. Sako is very nice as well. Either would be nice, just be sure to make your descision based on which features you think would be best for your purposes and that the barrel twist specs are appropriate for your bullet choice.
Rex, would you recommend the Savage Long Range 110 BA in .338 Lapua Magnum as a reliable 1 mile+ rifle with LAP engagement potential? The street price seems to be quite a value for extreme long range rifles. I acknowledge that component collection will have to be an ongoing process to take advantage of the spotty availability of powders and large grain bullets.
@ Tiborasaurus Rex: In your opinion and that of those you shoot with, between the Remington 700 and the Savage 116, which one would you choose as the better rifle and why? I hear both are capable of excellent accuracy. I know every rifle is an individual, so to say that one wins hands down may be hard to do. I plan to use the rifle for hunting purposes but am very picky about quality and accuracy. Looking for 1MOA or less at 100yds.
Yeah, now you've said it, having what i presume would be high centripetal inertia at relatively low velocity would start to tumble earlier but thanks for the comment. :) Any idea on a scope that isn't the SWFA (because of export regulations) in a similar price range? The Falcon Menace 4-14x44 seems the only viable option unfortunately... Thanks again for your reply and help :)
Great Video ! My long range Rifle is a 7RUM and I love it , it's really accurate out to long ranges . I know many have their favorites and I'm sure they are great guns too . I read a lot into it because I heard a lot of stuff about it that turned out NOT to be true , so if recoil doesn't really bother you cannot go wrong with a 7mmRUM .
+meccastreisand Happy Thanksgiving to you and your Family . My 7RUM was the smallest Caliber of three , one being a 375 and a 416 and I knew I didn't want a Safari Rifle so I went with the 7 . I know of one Hunter who has shot his Rifle a lot with no complaint of barrel life or his groups not being tight . The store where I got it from was the first one open during the Hurricane .
meccastreisand And .308 good to 10,000 rounds. So while external ballistics is all the rage in caliber comparisons here, the 308 has its merits. On balance, taking barrel life into account, and given my more humble distance ecpectations, a grand is my personal extreme long range, the 308 with lots of bullets to select from as a positive feature of the caliber, is my personal choice. Easy to reload, available anywhere and everywhere. It checks all my boxes.
Yeah, that would work very well.
Yep I fell into that one. My other long range is a 7mm Rem mag and will soon be getting a 7mm-08 in a light sporter but with a 24". I will be "sharing" that last one. Haha!!! I am doin it this way for the BC and some compatible reload components and mission criteria versatility. Got the whole store on layaway ;-0
In some of the older remington triggers, sometimes the safety and trigger could get out of whack. In the case of the bad 0.1% - if you pulled the trigger hard with the safety halfways on, it could fire when you flipped the safety to off. The new triggers like the ones in the XCR have been redesigned to fix that problem. But you want to be very careful with ANY firearm's "safety." I never trust a safety switch, they shouldn't even call it that - it gives people a false sense of security.
