to sew or not to sew, that’s the question. You can't say that this is one of my favorite activities. In any case you make it so easy and simple that one would think it was easy. I know model makers who delegate the work of the sails, it must not be that simple. Thanks for the extra time making the videos.
Ok, now you've done it--a proper throat lashing, "Five around and three across the lay." Something I learned at my grandparents' knee. Marlinspike seamanship will get in your blood. 🙂 I wish I had developed the patience for fine needlework like that. Just never did too impatient, I guess. For reefpoints, at smaller scales, I'd take suture thread and put a wall knot into it. Hold it straight, and CA it stiff. Cut at the knot and the length, then CA the knot to the after side of the sail so it would hang down straight with gravity. Forward side would not need CA to stiffen, as it would lay on the sail.
Olha no matter how many times I have watched you stitch sails I am always memorized, your skill as a craftswomen and as a videographer is quite simply stunning. I think Imbir just wants to play. Thank you and take care.
I just love your videos, I’ve learned so much watching them! I think I’m going to enjoy this one too as it looks like you’re going to explain the different parts of the sail itself! ❤❤
Thank you very much! I'm doing it for myself as well, since I'm relearning all the terminology in English))) And if it will be useful to someone else - I will be very pleased! For some reason, if I write something, especially in the background of a photo or video, I remember it forever...
It's a jewel of video... what work of patience and energy it takes. I suspect you take two servings of Cheerios in the morning when you're rigging ))) Take care of yourself, you are the best!
Another fascinating video with great videography and lighting. Perhaps more amazing than the actual sewing methodology was the lack of blood from needle sticks to the fingers. Thanks for sharing.
I enjoy your work very much and I have obtained many ideas from watching your videos to use on my model projects. Thank you so much for sharing and keep it up. All the best in 2023.
The depth of your talent and skill has no bottom! Of all the phases of construction, do you have a favorite? Thank you for taking the time to share : )
Thank you very much! My favorite part of this long process is the rigging! This is how you work for several years, build the hull, sew sails, and then install the rigging in a month)))
Amazing and very precise work! Kudos from me, Olha! Could you please tell us how you calculate the length of the thread, needed for stitching the boltrope? As I can see, you are using one single thread for the whole sail, without any unnecessary knots and this is wonderful!
Thank you very much! The length of the head-rop is equal to the width of the sail. The longer boltrope is equal to the other three sides of the sail, that is the port leech-rope, foot-rope and starboard leech.
Again, perfectly astounding! Reef points, marling hitches, bonnets, boltropes, earrings, etc. - in this scale details so small as to need a microscope to see, let alone create (should I ask how many times your fingers were almost included in the rigging)! Such a magnificent gift - thank you! 🤯
¡Simplemente perfecto!
I've got my rope walk up and running, picked up Gutermann 121, 151, and 382 in black, brown, and tan, and I'm getting a really good handle on it... including cable-laid. How are you getting 0.18mm rope? I've gone down to three single strands of 121, and still getting 0.24... are you using two strands? And what thread are you using to sew the boltrope to the sail? I know I've said it before, but thank you so much for your content. I'm headed into my first ship build, and I've learned a ton just watching & re-watching your videos.
I’ve been under the impression that bonnets were added or removed from the working sails to increase or decrease sail area as weather conditions changed. This seems inconsistent with the complex fastening process 😢you present. Would appreciate your comments. Best Wishes.
That is absolutely correct. Therefore, if you untie the seizing, which I did at the beginning of the seam, the loops will be released one by one. You will get the bonnet with the loops separately, as it was on the real ships. And for the loops of the bonnet at the foot of the mainsail, there were cringles, which I simply did not imitate (it is already too much for such a scale). This is the trick - I do everything in reverse, because that's the only way you can get a perfect seam on the model!
Thanks so much! I’ll watch again to see how this works. I was focused so much on the construction details that i didn’t appreciate that simply removing the seizing would allow the the two pieces to be separated. Regards, -S

Beautiful work again Olha. How many sails are on this ship and how many hours do you have in making them?
Thank you very much!
A total of 6 sails. I sewed for a week on a sewing machine and another 2 by hand... I don't count the time for making ropes...
Olha, I don'y know if I can ever sew sails, the look so complicated!
There is also a style in shipmodeling when a ship without sails...
It's unbelievable how you can detail a sail. Visit a todays sailing vessel and compare it with this art work. It's the same. More than well done

First came the first kit, then the books, and then from my coaches…
