    I found some dry black beans with a best by date of 2013 recently. I soaked for 24 hours and then pressure cooked for 35 minutes. They were fine but didn’t tell my husband until they were gone. 😀

    If you have old beans, soak them in hot water with a couple teaspoons of baking soda overnight. Rinse and then cook as you normally would. Has worked for me everytime

    I've started putting all my pantry items in large glass jars. That keeps my products fresher and neater.

      Good idea. Also, if you put them in canning jars and use a Food Saver to remove the air, they will last even longer. If you don't have a food saver, you can use oxygen absorbers to remove the oxygen, which will make them last lots longer.

      Glass jars. They also put little packets in the jars to take up any moisture that might be present.

      I found a video on dry canning for putting uncooked beans ,etc. Also they put little packets that take up moisture to help eliminate any moisture .

      @@ranytravis4953 there are certain moisture packages do not add to certain food. Like sugar, raisins. Etc. There are videos to explain this

      I use gallon jars and place BAY LEAVES 🍃 in the jars.
      Some day I would love to have a food saver product.

    Good Tip about only buying what your family or you will eat. I try to put stuff in my pantry that I know I will use, as I’m a single person. Recently got some canned goods for a good price to add to my stash. Can’t cook much right now due to a procedure has left me only with one arm to use for a week, so this really made me take a note to ensure I have food at home in case in the future I am unable to drive like I am unable to this week.💕 from Canada.

      Thats hard to do for us. We eat whole foods and hardly anything processed due to allergies and health issues. They dont make that for long term storing. And I dont know how to can/preserve things

    Thank you for your videos. Dry beans that have become too old to cook in a reasonable amount of time can be ground into flour. You can use the flour in non yeast recipes or for gravy. Adds extra protein as well.

    My pantry is rotational. EVERYTHING I have in it we eat or go through within a few months time and once something is used (say a can of tuna and two cans of soup) I replace those pretty quickly in the next grocery trip but I have PLENTY stocked so I never run out, just slowly replace as they are used :) The only thing in my pantry that is not on rotation, although I do use them from time to time, is my Augason Farms preps. I buy 2 cans every 4 months to build up my supply!

    Yes, I use bay leaves between my rice, pasta & bean layers & I've never had a problem. If you get get those moths & it becomes a problem, put fresh or dry lavender around the infested areas & you will see them drop like flies in about a day. I think an oil diffuser with lavender oil would also work. I hope this helps!

      I've tried bay leaves, mint leaves, rosemary -- all sorts of aromatics -- to get rid of those moths, and nothing works for me! I've cleaned the kitchen, taken everything out of the cupboards, wiped them out thoroughly with bleach solution, put in new stuff and WHAMMO! The moths are SO happy to have the new food, including the paper glued onto canned goods like soups and canned veggies! I find those pests right back again less than a week later. Frustrating!

      @@tanyafulton5261 Bay leaves from a jar work. I use them all the time. I pour a few ounces of rice or noodles in a container, level it out, add a couple of dried "from a jar" bay leaves, then repeat the process until the container is full. I put my containers in my cabinets, so far so good .. no bugs. Hope this helps. 😊🤓😊

      WE BOUGHT SOME RICE ONCE IN A SMALL BAG AND IN A FEW DAYS WE HAD THOSE MOTHS ALL OVER AND THE MOTH LARVAE LOOKED LIKE THE RICE ITSELF AND IT WAS DISGUSTING. THE MOTHS WERE EVERYWHERE, THEY WERE IN THE BAG, OUTSIDE THE BAG, ON OTHER FOOD, IT WAS THE WORST THING I EVER WITNESSED WITH FOOD BESIDES MOLD!!!!

    I used to write the day on the cans of when I bought them, in black marker to be able to see it quickly, but then I noticed that I could buy the same thing in another store later on, and the best by date came a year sooner. So I found that it was better to check each can and put on it the actual best by date. This takes longer, but is much more accurate as to when it needs to be used. So that is what I do now. Also, not everyone has a deep freezer, or room in their fridge freezer. If you store rice or something in a canning jar, and use a Food Saver to remove the oxygen, and you can even add oxy absorbers, insects can't live in an oxygen free environment. Just as good as freezing. You are right that you should buy what your family already eats. You don't want to be wasting money on things they may not like, and won't eat. Thank you for the video.

    Hi Larry and Hope, I love to watch your show...all the way from South Africa ! A tip from my side : to keep any critters from cornmeal ,oatmeal , rice etc. Just stick a few dried fig branches into the container and seal airtight. It really works xxxx

    I keep my chia seeds in the freezer too. I keep way more than we’ll normally eat for emergency preparedness. They’re nutrient dense and calorie dense so in a food scarcity situation it’ll really help us out.

    I started keeping track of how much Of items I am using each month. This helps me know how much I need for a year and what I need to get when any extra money comes my way or money saving coupons. So I don't stock too much of items I don't use. I also am cutting back on the amounts of items I'm using. I've cut back on how much coffee is use in my coffee maker, paper towels being used over again if possible, wash my aluminum foil off and reuse it. Pickup extra napkins when I pickup fast food for my Aunt then I use those instead of paper towels.

    All I would add is to make sure you have ingredients to feed family with no electricity or water available for three days. Many parts of our infrastructure rely on electricity including in many cases our water systems. Which also means you need at least 3 days of water for each family member. You don't want to have to use your emergency water to boil beans.

      We make sure our grill propane tanks are full, just in case, and that we have charcoal for THAT grill, too.

      I would try to have more than 3 days of water. You're right that you don't want to have to use your emer drinking water to boil beans.

      Water is 1 gallon per person for drinking and maybe some cooking. Need water for bathing and other.

    Hey Hope and Larry! Love this video! I personally now have about a year’s (possibly more) supply of oats, several flours, beans (including lots of lentils) white rice, and soy.Now I want to focus on getting quinoa, more oats, Maseca to make tortillas as that’s a staple in our home. My other goals is to get a grain grinder so I can get wheat berries, and we get a lot lentils because they take less time, energy and water to cook. I also keep ACV, blackstrap molasses, cane sugar.Also, bottles of water (buying plastic bottles breaks my heart tho), canned tomatoes and hot peppers. I also keep in my pantry stock of zote soap as it’s multipurpose as is baking soda, borax and washing soda.

    So good to see you once again.
    We actually have everything in.our ER Food Pantry, non of our goods need to be refrigerated and will last 3 to 5 years, every item is what we will eat. We do not buy or stock what we wont eat or use.
    Make sure to keep a Running Inventory List., Food Pantry, deep freezers.
    Date every item, the day you brought it in the home, and the date its opened.
    I keep our Ground coffee in our deep freezer.
    Hope I made Chili for our Supper and used Impossible Sausage Vegan, My Cowboy loved it, ate 2 bowls !!! He of course lol didn't know.

    New Subscriber, My name is Sharon and I am a 65 yr young single female all alone and I believe God led me to your channel. I would love for you to do a video in depth for dummies on how you power your refrigerator and other items in your home with the battery. I can not afford a generator and at 88 lbs I get cold very easily. I am on a budget so I can not afford to loose my food if the power goes out. Please Please Please do a video about this, I saw where in the past other subscribers have ask for this. You two are adorable and are so lucky to have each other.

      We're getting ready to shoot a video about keeping warm during winter storm outages. Larry is going to show a battery back up that he make using three items, but it will only power small items. A fridge takes a lot of power and generally takes a generator.

    You can get a bay leaf plant at the garden store though if you have a very cold winter you may need to protect it. 🌺🙏🌺

      I put mine into freezer when I come in from store. I leave them there for 3 days, get them out, bring them to room temp then store in quart and1/2 canning jars with vacuum sealer

    I love your channel and I’m excited for the new series! My family is plant based and I just recently started buying things like beans and grains in bulk. My dilemma is how to store them with limited space-especially that meets the criteria you mentioned for food storage. I’m not sure which route to go- food buckets, Mylar bags, storage bins... hope you’ll be sharing your favorite ways to store these types of foods. I’m also curious, do you keep long term foods like freeze dried foods in your pantry?

      Hi, keeper. No, we don't have any freeze-dried foods. We only have a fairly small cupboard area in the basement for most of the dry goods. We have a deep freezer in the garage and two refrigerators for additional storage. I would say, just store what you have room for.

      Cheese is tricky. One day it will seem perfectly fine and the next it's moldy - especially the shredded cheese.

      @@UndertheMedian I live by myself, and don't use a lot of cheese. I'll buy a block, grate half or 3/4, quick freeze the grated cheese. If I buy grated cheese I also freeze it. It lasts so much longer!

    Ditto. I stockpile all the same things...but not in the quantities you do. I live alone. I've kept a stash of these things for years and years....really decades. I rotate through them to make sure I'm using the oldest first.
    A few notes...I may have shared with you before (can't remember where I share what!)
    1. I dilute soft soap by at least 50%. 66% is just fine too. You just need to be able to see a few soap bubbles. It's actually the friction that cleans.
    2. I dilute or decrease laundry detergent by at least half. On a front loader, if you can see bubbles, you've put too much detergent in. On a top loader, if you can barely see soap bubbles (or, really, even if you don't) , you're OK; clothes will come out clean. If you want to strip detergent residue, every once in a while, add some vinegar. Don't do this too often because (voice of experience), it'll weaken and basically eat through fabrics. It's an acid. Be sparse with it, use sparingly. It'll make colors vibrant again...even blacks...they'll look blacker. It makes clothes look almost brand new.
    3. Light bulbs: my area electric company gives out free light bulbs to those who ask for a free energy evaluation of their homes. In some circumstances, they'll actually insulate your house. I've also been known to unplug everything except the fridge to lower electric bills. (I turned the stove off at the breaker box till I needed it and then turned it off again as soon as I finished using it.)
    7. Hydrogen peroxide: I've used it for years to sanitize toothbrushes. I keep a small jar in the medicine cabinet of it to soak my toothbrush in in between uses. Then, when I brush, I don't rinse out the peroxide. I put a dab of toothpaste on top of it and brush. It whites teeth a bit. The only only REALLY IMPORTANT THING is to DILUTE by 50% water. Hydrogen peroxide is not only an acid, it's a strong enough acid to eat through and destroy soft tissue...like gums. So, DILUTE by 50% and make sure to RINSE THOROUGHLY with water after use!
    14. I've bought cases of canned goods for years. It makes it so that I don't have to go to the store as often. Learned in an economics class decades ago, that the less we enter a store, the less we spend overall, because there are less opportunities to snag impulse buys.
    17. I add sweet pickle relish to condiments stored, because I love them and use them in a dish I often eat.
    I didn't hear salt on your list. Not only does it last forever, if you're a brave soul, you can brush your teeth with it and use it as a sort of deodorant.....and use it on a slice of lemon as an abrasive cleaner on things like brass, sinks, bathroom fixtures, etc.
    Thought I'd also share with you a way to de-bug rice I learned decades ago at a convent. People would donate a 100 lbs. at a time. It would get bugs. When it came time to take more out of the 100 lb. sack, they would fill a large (huge, industrial size sheet cake pan...flat, with sides... and as a convent, they did have restaurant style and sized cookware) pan with hot, almost boiling water. Before hand, they'd have filled up a slightly smaller pan (that would sit in the larger pan) with rice. As soon as the smaller pan hit the larger pan with hot water in it, bugs would scramble fast to get out of that hot rice. So, they'd jump overboard...right into the pan of nearly boiling water. I tried it; it works! Plus, you don't have any frozen bug parts left. It kills bug eggs, too. As soon as there are no more escaping bugs, remove the pan with rice from the hot water pan. Let the rice cool and then pack it in air tight containers. It hasn't cooked...cook it in the usual way.

    One thing I was just thinking you should buy is powdered milk I had to drink it as a kid and yes I hate it but you can cook with it

      I'm in the UK and we have days in the winter that we can't get out of the house due to snow. I keep dried milk powder as well and find it useful. It also doesn't take a lot of space and our homes are a lot smaller than UK homes

    Larry, I sure like your "cool as a moose " mug. Great idea to write when something is bought. I put the date on things I open. I dehydrate some foods so that I can have it on hand & it doesn't go bad. I have dehydrated mushrooms (got on clearance) & celery.

    My challenge at this point is that my 6yo is extremely picky, even when she helps me cook. She loves helping me cook for myself and for others, but she won't eat a lot of what she helps cook. Except mac-n-cheese.

      I had the same problem with my daughter when she was that age. Her preschool teacher told me that it was my job to cook healthy food and it was her job to eat it and that I shouldn't make her anything different and that she would eat when she was hungry. She's 30 and eats everything now.

    Take your old dried beans, stuff in a new sock, tie off, microwave for three minutes for a cheap heating pad & buy fresh beans.

    Such good advice, especially concerning buying foods that you will eat. I used to buy protein additives for my smoothies, but never liked them. Money wasted every time.

    I'll just share my experience with freezing my grains for 3 days - was not enough, and I still had moths! I am now trying to put them in the freezer for a week.

      Freeze it twice, that's what a lot of us do. After the first freeze eggs may hatch, those need to be treated as well.

      @@ievaification after the first freeze, some eggs that weren't destroyed may hatch thinking it's spring after the freeze. I usually just give it about three days since I do mine in smaller packages. I don't put the big bulky packages in the freezer.

    And the jars keep the products free of bugs as well. This is why I use them! I use my jar sealer to do the deed. I live in the south where we have an abundance of trees that seem to harbor tiny bugs.

    Hi! Thanks for your sharing, thought I would share a tip I recently learned by experience.
    When planning an emergency pantry, like you can’t buy groceries? Seriously consider testing your stock by doing a pantry challenge! We have been doing this and find we needed to consider items in our supplies, because you just might have to eat a little differently than you normally do!
    One example we found with no butter, I found I was okay in many situations replacing this fat with olive oil in some instances and coconut oil in others.
    Coconut oil works to butter my toast with and to make chocolate chip cookies 🍪 with 😉
    We knew we would desire sweet treats on occasions and bought prepared pie fillings only to discover we enjoyed the flavor of simple canned fruits instead of the mix. Which had more flavor as well as far more versatility!

    I don't do tons of rice and beans ( I have some for if TSHTF) .. I do like can goods ( but space is an issue for cans) I prefer date of purchase.. ( the use by date is hard to see) I have ground coffee to last 3-4 months.. But beans take up too much space for me.. I prefer instant and freeze dried instant coffee for long ( past 3 months) term after the ground coffee used up. But very good practical storage advice, loved this clip.

    I am an older single senior. One thing to made a note of is size of canned goods. Like you noted is dried food like beans, rise, sugar, flour. We have never been in a situation that we have been without power or water for very long. In my 70 plus years I can count on one hand when we have been without power for more than a day.

    I would add oats to the list of things that should go into the freezer for a few days. We have had so much trouble with oats having moth larvae in them that we keep the oats in the freezer now.

    I have never done canning but am always in envy of the exhibits at the State Fair. I am really interested in canning meat, you get a great price but preservation prevents you from buying extra. My mother died & I still have food that is still good she caned. I take that back, I have pickled some things but never pressure cooked them. In the 80's I tried a hand at dehydration & made some pretty good beef jerky. Problem is, those .99 cents a pound briskets are now three dollars a pound. I tried some dried Cuttle Fish a Thai guy had, the flavor would not leave for a long time.

    I pretty much keep anything whole (brown rice, ww flour, stoneground cornmeal) in the freezer permanently. I find it keeps them fresh for a year. White rice, white flour, and popcorn seem fine on the shelf (after the initial freeze.)

    I've been replacing millet for quinoa. Even more protein and minerals and usually less costly. It's an acquired taste, but well worth it. I bet your Amish store has millet available in bulk.

    When I open a container that has to be used up in a certain amount of time, I put the date it needs to be discarded on the container. That really helps me use things up and not throw so much away. On my cans etc. in the pantry I put the use by or best by date in big numbers on the outside so I use them up in a timely manner. I live in the PNW and have never had a problem with bugs in my flour etc. Don't know why but I am thankful. I used to live in Hawaii where absolutely everything was bug prone. Yuck.

    How much freezer space do you have? Could you freece flour for three days and then put it in big jars?

      You need to make sure it comes back to room temp before putting it in jars, or you will get condensation in the jars, and that will cause mold, and things to go bad.

    Will it make the food soggy freezing beans, pasta and etc for 3 days and then putting back on your pantry shelf?

      I don't know about others, but I've never frozen my pasta items. They're usually stored in airtight plastic, I just put them away in airtight glass containers. Beans need freezing before storing, so does flour. Rice: not if it's in airtight plastic, but if it's in bulk or a sack, I'll freeze it first.

    Vinegar, especially 9%, is a great disinfectant. I use it everyday instead of bleach or Clorox products.

    Using Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for things such as white rice and dry beans will allow them to last even longer I see a minimum of five years a max out some say of 25 years I’m not sure if I go that long when it comes to beans and rice but I would say between five and 10 years with oxygen absorbers and Mylar bags

    I try to rotate everything so I don’t waist anything. Only buy what you eat! Have some extra to bless others. Spam taste great with pineapple. Yes. We eat spam. I have a son whose vegetarian so have lots of bean burgers in #10 cans. We are bugout location for the family. We have a very rural farm.

    Stock dates, best buy dates do differ.
    Don't buy food or sizes of packaging you know you won't use before the product goes bad. I have enough buorbon and syrup for probably a year.
    Cocoa and tea, not coffee for me.
    Pasta n dry beans need placed in glass bars in a cool dark place. (Thanks to mice.)
    I am very slowly getting my 3 month pantry done.
