absolutely facts...look at kaytranada's boiler room set back in 2013 where he rips the set with a traktor s2 Mk2..but i have no regrets getting my DDJ-1000
I got myself the ddj1000 too love it finding it difficult to scratch on since its not a 12 inch vinyl and its harder to learn control on these controllers but i love my ddj1000 👌
As a photographer I can tell, it's exactly the same with cameras. Just buying the newest and qualitywise best camera wont give you the best pictures without hard work and skill.
True words Carlo! Nobody cares which DJ gear you have, when you play / mix music. Okay maybe other DJs. But that’s it! I use DDJ SX2, because I love Serato, it’s comfortable to bring it to parties / celebrations and wasn’t that expensive. But in the future I’ll still move to DDJ 1000 SRT, because I want to have that CDJ 1000 / club feeling at my home 😁
Damn Carlo! Nobody, I mean NOBODY will share as honest opinion as you do. Thats why you're the hero we all need. I own a DDJ400. Bought it after watching your video on beginner dj controller comparision and that helped me decide which controller I want. I will ever be greatful to you for guiding me/us with such honesty and integrity.
I'm just gonna tell you right now.. YOU'RE THE BEST! Not only do you help DJ's, and beginners.. You also care and respond to several comments by us each video. Im so glad you are honest, and that you share your opinions with us. Keep doing what you do, you're amazing!
Well, the best thing to do is stick to your current controller, learn how to mix really well, and make smooth transitions without effects! You won't always need to use them
While I MASSIVELY concur to stay cheap as possible for anyone starting out, here's are the counter arguments for spending more as you move forward: 1) In most good clubs, the DJ booth is already fully kitted out, and you are NOT allowed to bring your setup unless you're an absolute star. I've watched countless DJs with cheap controllers just trainwreck hard when they step up to play on CDJs and a mixer, purely because the physical interface changes throw them. They don't move the platters right, or they expect expression pads on the decks which are just NEVER there in the club (Pioneer CDJ / XDJ decks do NOT have pads!). 2) When you go past 2 channels, suddenly having better controls and the ability to see what's going on in 3+ channels at once is VERY important. For this reason, only the most expensive 4-channel controllers are useful here... And again, you WON'T use that in a club, so if you want to go 3-deck, you really need to move away from controllers entirely and get real decks. I don't recommend anyone try start out that way though. 3) If you're a largish guy, cheap controllers are just tiny with less space for your hands. I find using small controller jog wheels VERY fiddly and physically uncomfortable.
In My eye controllers just give You more than CDjs with those pads like 1000 controller for example, is just way easier the only thing that You could be missing out are the screens cause You can do pretty much everything else, also i think in a club system for sure they sound better that's why they use it i think.
Here I am sitting at my desk and considering upgrading from my DDJ-SB3 to a Denon DJ Prime 4 ... but then I watch this video ... and now I'm like, "nahhhh my SB3's good enough for now!" Videos like this help give me some perspective about my purchase. Thanks Carlo!
the main reason why I upgraded drom the ddj 400 to the DDJ 1000 is for the extra outputs and 4 channels. Now i can connect a laptop to the 4th channel and play song requests on party's.
My friend bought 4 cdj 2000 nxs 2s and a djm 900 nxs2, leaves them in my studio so I'm pretty good at operating them and setting it up. Before that I would just use a traktor controller and it was totally fine.
I upgraded from ddj sb2 serato for ddj 1000 rekordbox. My purpose was to get as close to a club gear and that's why I switched to rekordbox. After few months with it I can definitely say it was a good move as I love rekordbox plus ddj 1000 it s just simply amazing
I started with Pioneer ergo with a company I was working for. I took the money from a gig and bought a Ddj sb3 worth the intention of upgrading it within the year. I’ve actually grown to like the sb3. I think it’s ironic how I can go do gigs where I make 1000+ dollars with a 250 dollar controller lol. I’ve definitely had my eye on new controllers but also as a mobile Dj I enjoy the fact that the cheaper controllers are just much less liability!
Your mom is a pretty awesome lady. I only discovered your videos lately but I find that you have very solid advice. This is a refreshing change from the usual, look at my stuff, it costs like 10 grand but it is the benchmark as to what the pros use. Keep up the great work. Great to see your mom some day in a video.
I still have my DDJ-SB2 and I have had it for almost 3 years now. It has never let me down when I have to go gigs or to just take with me on the road and practice with . 😃😃🙏🏼🙏🏼
When Pioneer released the DDJ-SX2 it blew my mind, it took me 2 years to get one, i have the SX2 for 3 years now and during this time i've been tempted to upgrade many times specially for the DDJ1000, DENON Prime4 and now the new 1000SRT but I realised that they do the same thing and the SX2 and SX3 is such a controller, I had gigs with a saxophonist playing with deep house tunes and he couldn't believe that i could connected his mic on my controller and I still had 2 turntables connected, its all about music selection and creating an atmosphere, Im gonna wait another 2 years to upgrade, lets see what they gonna have on the market. Thanks for the video bro!!!
Since I’m a mobile DJ and wanted to charge more for wedding and corporate events, I purchased the DDJ1000. Factors were multiple inputs, jog wheels, displays, long pitch faders and better gain control. But I still own my Wego3, and SB2. Solid little controllers that taught me all the fundamentals of djaying. And still learning. Even scratching on an iPad can be done well if you have the skill. Perception is everything but you still need the skills and selecting the right songs for the right crowds to sound good. Love my DDJ1000 but I would still sound like crap 💩 if I didn’t work on my skills.
Hi Dj Carlo Atendido from Bulgaria :) i like what you do and how you give that information to us! I bought a ddj400 just for fun and i love it... I dont have much skills but i want to get better in time! In final i want to wish you manny luck and health! Wish you best again from Bulgaria
I saw this video before buying my first DJ controller, and made me realize that I didn't need the most expensive one, but one that was affortable and friendly to learn to djing good, so, thanks for telling us this, because it is a fact that most of the people ignore and I'm still having a blast with my ddj-sb3, merry Christmas!!
Dope video. To answer your question, I own: - Pioneer DDJ SR2 - Just to learn basic mixing and I can take it with me to private functions to make a few extra bucks - A pair of Technic SL1200MKII and an AKAI AMX mixer - because ever since I started watching the Redbull Threestyle videos, I just wanted to learn how to use turntables and hopefully become a turntablist myself
bro i have nothing but respect for you u are a really honest person thank you for clarifying this subject I own sb3 dj controller and I pay with serato but to record my mixer I use virtual dj
Thanks for the appreciation bud! And of course, I just want to be honest in my videos. I'm curious though as to why you record with VDJ while playing with Serato; Serato can record too! Hahaha
LOL! I am holding my BCD200 in my hand now! It was my first DJ controller and looking back at it, the BCD2000 had a lot of features for its time. I agree that you cannot buy skills by getting the most expensive gear. You have to practice and want to get better by making each session better than your last. You also have to love music and how when combined with your artistry, it can allow you and your audience to connect in a way that is powerful and satisfying. Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts and feelings about what the DJ culture means to you and continue to demonstrate, educate, and appreciate all that it has to offer!!!
Truth right there!! Have a DDJ-RR myself, mainly got it for the additional ports for back up kit, you never know right!! Also can plug a set of turntables in if I choose to for some DVS action!! 😍 that and it came in handy when doing a private function where someone brought some XDJ players. Straight up plug and play 😉 oh and handy for recording rare vinyl tracks etc! 😊
My friend who left the DJ scene gave me his Traktor S2 Mk1 for free.... at least for now. I currently am very much interested in Rekordboxdj combined with the DDJ-400. Surely I can stick to my S2 and gain experience (which I'm doing currently).... but I wanna get the feeling of the DDJ and get used to a software I truly love. Nothing wrong with Traktor of course... I just like Rekordboxdj better from what I'm seeing and wanna get used to a CDJ layout. Is it a good enough reason? Still trying to figure this out.
I bought the Denon Prime gear because I wanted better gear. No other reason. And you are absolutely right about reading a crowd. That takes experience doing what? Reading a crowd. And the only way you get that is to play to a crowd. I loved working in multiple clubs when I was full time behind the turntables. You were exposed to different crowds and it was rarely boring. I miss those carefree days...
Great video. I ended up going with the Pioneer DDJ-S1 for Serato about four or five years ago. I was on my technic 1200’s since I started Djing 17 years ago and some Pioneer CDJ-200’s when they came out. Keep up the videos. 👊🏻
Yup, you go it right! It,s not the equipment/controller that makes a better DJ, it,s the skill on how to become a better DJ, I started djing back in the Philippines in 1989 and i was using a Akai belt drive turntable then Technics 1200 mk2 and when i i move here in the US last 2000, i bought my first cdj for $125 and some borrowed speakers from friend and fast forward to today I'm using a Numark NS6 for, i think, 7 years now and Im loving it. Thanks and more power to your vlog. Salamat!
I have a DDJ RB. I bought it 2 years ago. Before making the purchase I was contemplating to either get the DDJ RR or the RB. What made me get the RB was the price. For 250Euros (Back then), I have a good DJ controller which comes with a free license for Rekordbox DJ.
I've taken some dj-classes at dj-school where setup was exclusively of Pioneer decks and mixers. So I bought for learning goals *Pioneer DDJ-400.* It was such a good purchase, because of similarity of my home and school equipment. The controller itself is outstanding thing. On the other hand, I've never used rekordbox before, it is great software, but _as for me_ it is the Number Two after Traktor. That is why my next buy will be *Traktor S2 mk3.* But I really love my DDJ-400 too! It so great that the best dj gears you select are the same -- DDJ-400 and S2 mk3 :-)
Also I love what you put your example's for DJ's on its not the hardware its how you use the hardware and you don't need all extra to go hard. Music Selection. How to end on the music. What to play what not to play. What type of style of music you going to play at your next event. Pretty much I always tell up coming DJ's who hit me up. Keep up the work. Funk Up Salute Peace.
You are soooo on point! I learned to Dj on belt drive turntables (cheap) that skipped if you sneezed near them. (1984)When I got my first job at 15 I purchased my first 1200(1985). One year later I purchased my second one.(I was only making $3.25/hr and the 1200’s were about $300 back then) But I noticed that I didn’t become a better Dj just a more comfortable Dj. Fast forward 20 years or so, I am now retired from Giging and Dj only as a hobby and for myself. A family man now with bills, I be dammed if I paid $1000 for any peace of equipment now. My first controller was a Hercules ($240) back in mid 2005 or so. My second one years later was a Numark Mixtrack 3(Black Friday special at $140). The 3 yrs later I purchased a Mixtrack Platinum for $240. I would have been completely happy with that controller but I always missed the tourque and pull of a Tech 1200 with vinyl on it. Since I got rid of my 1200’s years ago, I could not and would not get that “feel”. I was saving my money up to either buy a used Numark ns7 1 or 2, or a brand new Ns7 3. But then Tracktor Kontrol came out with the S4 with Haptic drives for like $900. That was well within my budget and so as a Christmas gift to myself, I bought it and have finally been Komplete! Lol I got the vinyl “tourque feel “ that I’ve been longing for! Now, one per week for like 2-3 hours, I cut it up like I used to back when I was 15 with only one fan listening to my mixes. My dog Khloe(chiwawah). 😊
I love your dedication to this artform and your no nonsense approach to teaching this art. U have a cool attitude and do your job well. You're teaching me a lot. Thanks. Cheers.
What up Dj Carlo. This video was very awesome to watch. Your 1st DJ controller was a $150. I got something around there but it was $250 it was from a company in Japan call Vestax I had there latest controller was call Typhoon. It help me from my days on DJing online from Live Video Chat Room to Online Radio. Then I upgrade to the last model Vestax VCi-380 which it was up in the $700,00 or $800,00 higher. It still works great and I love it and its a stand alone mixer so If I want to plug in 2 turntables which I am working on getting real soon. Or C D J'S I will too. Keep up the work DJ Carlo. Funk Up Salute DJ Carlo I will share this video out.
i started off with a DDJ SB-2 but upgraded to a DDJ 1000 so that 1) Majority of gigs I do use XLR cables, and I wanted the ability to bring my own controller to gigs and 2) So that I have one controller dedicated to serato, and one dedicated to rekordbox
you are absolutely correct! right now i have S4 MK3 but i don't use all the new features that comes with it! i just only do the basic mixing. the real thing here is how you manage the crowd to stay at the dance floor. even my old sx that one comes with lots of features but i haven't use it. maybe i'm just lazy to use :D
Thanks idol DJ Carlo! For being honest and btw, we had the same exact Behringer BCD2000 DJ controller! Back in 2008, I ordered one from Ebay online and had it shipped to the Philippines. It was fun to control digital mp3 files off the computer coz I was tired of burning cd's and/or mixing VDJ with just the mouse and keyboard. It was heaven-sent for me, as there were only a handful of controllers back in the 2000s, and it was a big thing that some companies came out with these back in the day. There is another model the BCD3000 with an upgraded paint job, so when it came out, I painted my BCD2000's jog wheels and knobs silver just to mimic the look of the 3000. Enjoy man, and we admire your skills!
Hey Carlo! Great video! Once more I totally agree with you! I love the way you think and thanks for sharing your experience! ❤️ The DJ equipment I'm going to get is the Roland DJ202, but for now the DJ-stuff I spent my last savings on was buying music! 🤘
As a former salesperson in a prominent music store selling dj equipment, he's bang on 100% that you really don't need to spend huge bucks to get a product that will let you spin like a boss..... that being said, i've been a motorized controller snob since the days of the old school CDX from Numark, and still have 4 of them to this day I love the feel so much. Currently my mobile rig is a NS7ii w/3lcd + 2 CDJ1000mk3 and that's all the control I think i'll ever need lol. I haven't seen a single product in years that makes me want to upgrade.
Kids today are so lucky to have access to such a selection of great music and technology for so cheap. When I started out, buying anything other than technics was a waste of money. Took me so long to save up for my beloved 1200s. And vinyl was soooo expensive. I could only afford to buy around 6 tracks per MONTH. It’s a different world today and you guys can’t believe how good you have it!
I have numark mixtrack 3 it does not have beat slicer mode, pad fx, keyboard mode, and it does not have beat roll mode and I want to learn these things too . Do I need to upgrade my setup to Ddj 800 or Ddj rr or buy any sub controller like ddj sp1 or xp2?
Rewatching anyway I got a DDJ-SX back in 2012 my dad bought this and the reason is we have this Sound System Rent business and 4 Channel is pretty useful for Programs/Event also for my gigs
I used Traktor S4 for years. Now I wanted to avoid to carry and look always on a laptop. So now I have a good mixer (Xone 96) and changed to play on a media player (Denon SC5000M). That works really fine for me. The mixer is the heart of the setup and I think my sets will be more accurate when I have trained on the new set up. But of course the most important thing is too have the feeling for the crowd and the killer track in the right moment. Keep up the good work!
Hi thanks for the video I bought a 2 Technics 1200 and a Vestax PMC 05-PRO-III to perform funky oldskool turntablism 4 years ago, now at days purchase the Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol Z2 mixer, from then I feel like a little boy in a toy store enjoying the digital boundaries amazing a lot of fun!
You are absolutely right in that there is no equipment that can tell you which is the best track to play next. This cannot be taught or even learned and even if you discover a winning formula, times change and so do the crowds. But I think without this fundamental ability you probably wouldn't be interested in DJ'ing to begin with. If you are freaking out about getting new equipment or changing equipment because you are playing a new venue, renting that equipment to practice and get comfortable is a great option. If you are a registered business paying your taxes then you can write off the rental costs and usually you can get better than normal rental rates. This can help you identify the value of new gear or just get you to a point where you're comfortable enough with a different set up to play without your OCD tingling too hard the whole time.
If you have or plan for a decent audio multichannel interface consider controller with a hardware mixer. This is especially worth it if you combine it with studio grade monitor speakers.
I started my journey Listening to you about which gear to buy Which software to use You're a blessing An absolute shortcut I don't know many ways To express my gratitude With so much have learned from your UA-cam channel
I upgraded from a Traktor S4 to a DDJ-1000. Ran across your videos while learning about some of the features the DDJ-1000 has. Ended up picking up a a DDJ-400 after watching a few of your videos. As the DDJ-200 didn't offer as much functionality as I wanted. The DDJ-800 was a bit overkill. Now I find myself using the DDJ-400 for track prep (Memory/Hot Cues) and practice. When I go to production I use the DDJ-1000.
I just want to say first of all I love all your videos. When I started DJ in 25 years ago I spent over $1,500 I'm too crappy turntables and Gemini mixer now you can spend $1,500 and get amazing equipment. It's amazing how far the technology has come and what you can do for such a cheap price.
I bought a XDJ 1000 mk2 and DJM 900NXS2 setup. I used to play on controllers and my last controller I played on was a DDJ-RZX. I know I am crazy from going from a 3kUSD DJ/VJ controller to XDJs. But the most reason why I did that is, lugging around the huge controller was really taking its toll on my back and I was sick of using my laptop to DJ. And I just wanted something more portable and easier to play off of. Plus I like a good bit of the features on the 900NXS2 mixer and the XDJs feel pretty good for what I do
I DJ without a controller. I use my Mac and Algoriddim djay Pro. One week ago I bought an used Traktor Kontrol S3 because I was supposed to be able to integrate it with djay. I am still trying to make it work. I hope I can make it happen because I would like to step up and use a controller instead of the computer.
Just recently bought the DDJ-200 as my first controller and I must say I’m pretty happy with it since it allows me to practice basic skills such as beat matching and mixing. I might need to upgrade to the DDJ-400 some day tho if I want to take the next step.
I'm using ddj-400 with rekordbox. As a beginner I don't have any idea about what controller will help me to learn DJing properly. I bought this controller, because it's price is comfortable to me. Now I realised that practice and unique skill will made me a Dj, not the controllers
Really true dj carlo. But i don't have any problems because my friends owns controllers in last year and the latest and yes, it's really true that dj skills don't measures on what gear you had it is in the ability of the dj on how to rock the crowd. Thanks you so much for all the advices love it ❤️
4:42 i personally think that the build Quality does matter overtime cause the durability and also more features like more bottoms so instead of using the mouse as much You Focus more in your equipment and in your performance also four channels i think can be cool to use as well and more fun than just editing your song on ableton. To make live mashups.
If you think you need more features, then go for it! What I'm saying here is, don't spend money on all the bells and whistles if you're not gonna use them. If you are, then upgrade by all means! 😄
I like your style and videos , and yes you are on point . As a teenager in high school back in the 80s I bought some technique belt drive turntables and a Gemini mixer . Did house parties , weddings and proms 20 yrs later wanted to mix again just for fun , family and friends. But the equipment has changed, bought some Gemini cdj 700 and a numark analog mixer since I have over 1800 cds. From a pawn shop . It worked but then upgraded to denon 3700s and a denon x 1600 mixer needed a dvs to work with serato. Hooking this stuff up is not easy and downloading CDs to iTunes and making creates . Where all I want to do is turn it on and practice. Know I got a good deal on denon sc6000ms because you can play with out a dj service serato or rekerbox . Thk you for listening if anyone feels my pain.
😅🤣🤣😂 @ "for a cheap ass DJ like me" i love your realness and sense of humor, halarious, i like how youre not cocky like these other pro DJ, you acually give me hope as a beggining DJ and i always come to your channel for advice, keep the videos coming 🙏🏾✌🏾
I own a Numark MIXTRACK (the very first edition without hot cues) I actually got it from my dad, who used to dj, but he have retired since. This was his first controller, he did have a more expensive Pioneer one, but he already sold that by the time I decided to give djing a try. It kinda bugged me that this contoller had lack of hot cue buttons, that I started using an android app on my tablet (OSC Mk. I) to give me those extra buttons. So I use both the controller and my tablet.
I would highly recommend getting a new controller if you wanna continue DJing bud! The original Mixtrack is a classic, but it DOES lack a lot of features common in controllers now.
I still have my ddjsb2 from 3 years ago I think it is now, one side wont use the vinyl effect, but I still love it and when I preform with friends, it's fun, humbling and raw. I love using somewhat broken equipment, it makes the moment more organic for me in a way
I bought an XDJ Aero off a friend... My thoughts about this subject are the same as yours: less is more, you can do pretty much everything you really need for mixing with a decent controller. I still happily gig on my Aero if needed, I'm actually happy with it as it works as a standalone mixer and plays out of an USB stick alone, yet can't have waveforms on its old screen, which I'm OK with, as I saw it as challenge me to sharp my ears and know my tracks better, which I'm the end makes a better dj... I'm happy and proud of having it, even though is old.
I have four setups they are as follows. DDJ SX 2. Brought after owning the DDJ SX 1. I really like it as a compact road setup and i was over carry a road coffin with turntables. 2 × technic 1210s and a rane 62 mixer with Phase dj. This is my home setup, Has been retired from road uses. Previous mixer with this rig was a rane ttm 57. Main road rig right now is the rane twelves with a rane 72 mixer. I wanted to go back to turntables on the road without the issues of needles. Final rig is a dj2go2 with a keyboard for midi functions. This is a go anywhere system that i can take on holiday in my backpack.
I Have the Hercules inpulse 200. The only reason why I bought it was because, the DJ2Go2 Touch was out of stock. I just wanted to buy the cheapest controller to mess around with because, Quarantine was happening and I needed a new hobby. Turns out, I bought the right one. When they finally got the DJ2go2 touch restocked, I bought it as a gift for my sister's Birthday.
DDJ-SX Original. Back then, it was the flagship controller from Pioneer. Took a huge leap since this was literally a game changer of a controller and at the time, just under a grand. Still have it to this day and has been through a lot (broken faders, missing knobs, all replaced though). Still does the job well in all my gigs and I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. Spent the money I made off this controller for its case, Monitors, PA Speakers and subscriptions to DJ pools,
I use ddj rb..i mapped this controller to its fullest use..any number of pad pages and any number of effects i can use..besides 4 decks also..slip mode..key lock..auto loop..etc
Mike drop!!....I had this conversation with another DJ this weekend! You are so right on. I use the pioneer ddj2.(I think...don’t care)...if you can’t do it on a 200 dollar controller, you won’t do it on a 1000 dollar one. I use a simple controller and use a mini preamp to connect to my powered speakers. Sounds great! No complaints and no one has ever said a thing
I played on a Numark iDj Pro for almost 2 years. It used an iPad and integrated with Spotify. I could walk into a gig with only a back pack with all of my gear in it. It was pretty awesome, especially coming from the vinyl days. Somewhere along the line, I was convinced that I needed to upgrade. That lead to a DDJ-SX2 and now a DDJ-1000. I love my DDJ-1000 controller, but I was perfectly fine on the $250 Numark and still could be. I miss the Spotify integration the most.
I have a ddj-400 along with ddj xp1 why i have it its very compact and lite.. i dont have a lot of space in my house to store it and it is easy to carry around during gigs as a mobile dj.
I started with Technics 1200's back in the day when I was just a kid. I had the Numark back then and 808's. I moved upto Xone DX using Traktor. My son recently took over as I had left the DJ scene in the early 2000's. He currently has Traktor Controller S4 along with my 1200 Technics and Vinyl.
Hi Carlo, I’ve recently bought a DDJ400 . I bought it as I didn’t wanna spend a bomb on the gear (I’m a beginner) and more importantly it has most of the functions that an expensive gear would have.
I won a famous FM radio DJ contest and performed a DJ set on that FM radio with just my Numark Party Mix (100$), winning over many DJs rocking cdj2000 and over 1000$ stand-alone stuff. So, I totally agree with you.
Hey Carlo. Just got my first controller. The Numark NVII. The reason I got such an expensive controller is because it has dual screens. Numark controllers cost much less than Pioneer and, as you say, they do the same thing with only minor differences, overall.
My first dj controller is Pioneer DDJ-SZ used. Still using it today. The power supply burnt out. I also change another used jog wheels. Sometimes the jog wheels vinyl mode not working. Thinking better buy new jog wheels. I bought the SZ cause was a good deal. $1300 CAN Dollar. Only down fall it's heavy. I bought a odyssey black laptop/keyboard tray flight case. Made it even heavier lol
Okay i know that this was recorded for over a year ago or something like that, but for the days question: I own a DDJ-400 (bought it for exactly 10 days ago) and it's my first DJ controller ever. And damn, i feel like that is the perfect DJ controller for me, because it is not that big, it fits in your backpack, it does what it is suppose to do, and of course... You got it!
My first DJ equipment was the DDJ-RB. I got it because it was cheap and you made a video on which controller to buy and the DDJ-RB was one of them. I really enjoy using it. ❤️✌🏻
hahahaha carlo you just hit the nail on the head here you are right i can do everything on my ddj-sb2 as the same with my expensive gear few years ago than the total setup new whould cost me around 3000 to 4000 eu and now second hand 70eu dj controller gives me the same fun like years before and even now i have even more control over my music because i have bigger screen with waves patterns i know when a beat kicks in when pauze comes in songs so eventually im more happy with my second hand 70eu controller than my big setup than :) greetings
great advice, you couldn't be more right. I purchased DDJ200 recently, as I am using my phone and tablet to DJ(no laptop yet) this was the perfect option for me. have also modified it by fitting a power bank inside the unit(byebye warranty) so its truly wireless when using BT, have a good quality BT Receiver with up to 5ms latency). I also have a 502 Wharfedale mixer/preamp to reduce interference by keeping the old 3.5mm cable short.(has balanced outputs from mixer, and I am using the headphone output as my booth monitor 😉) Have dabbled in rekordbox on my missus lappy, but have never used Serato, I like the thought of Serato Studio(just watched your live stream) so I guess my next decision on my rookie DJ journey will be do I stay the path and upgrade to its bigger brother the 400 or do I go different and get the Platinum fx as I do like the spacious 'look' not that I'm a shallow person and base everything on looks. Thanks for the advice and videos DJ Carlo, you truly are an inspiration to all DJ enthusiasts beginner to pro
i have a ddj 400 and momentarily trying to find out when and why I should upgrade. the only thing im missing at the moment is a balanced XLR output. idk if I should buy a small mixer just to concert unbalanced to balanced signal or if I should get a DI box or just get a bigger controller which has an balanced XLR output built in. can somebody help me?
what should i tell my parents. my parents tell me i wont be anything with a dj controller but my brother tells me im good when i play on his but i cant buy a dj controller for myself because my parents wont let me.
I like the honesty. But I owned ddj sb3 and some other entry level controllers. Now I have the DDJ 1000 and wouldn't want to go back. Still great video like every single one. Great channel.
Thanks man! Though this one is directed more at those just starting out, and thinking that having amazing gear guarantees great content! Once you've done your time, it's only natural you climb up the ranks 🥳
@@djcarlo it's the other way around! You have no idea how much I wholeheartedly appreciate what you are doing for us just starting to delve into DJing. You are a Godsend to us.
2 months ago ..i bought Traktor S2MK3..after watching your comparison video..thank you..why i choose it after watching your video?cause i like simplicity and I'm more expose to Native Instruments products..
absolutely facts...look at kaytranada's boiler room set back in 2013 where he rips the set with a traktor s2 Mk2..but i have no regrets getting my DDJ-1000
Your money buy whatever makes you happy. The ddj1000 btw is an awesome set up
It was an S2 mk1 ! :)
I got myself the ddj1000 too love it finding it difficult to scratch on since its not a 12 inch vinyl and its harder to learn control on these controllers but i love my ddj1000 👌
Tony Montana exactly
Played many great DJ events with artists and by myself with my Traktor S2 didn't need an overpriced mixer to do great
When Pioneer DJ saw this video, they'll be like: Blacklist this guy😂
Hahahaha! Sssshhh!
LOL😆
I like DJ Carlo not just because of his skills but also for his genuineness as a person.
Genuine and unbiased review, bless your heart Carlo!
I'm very glad with my ddj1000!.. and you now why ?
Because I learn lot of things from Dj Carlo Atendido
As a photographer I can tell, it's exactly the same with cameras. Just buying the newest and qualitywise best camera wont give you the best pictures without hard work and skill.
Yep! I've shot magazine covers and won photo competitions with my old D200 and those photos would still hold up today.
These are all under $300 (shows price “$320”) 😂
No problem, really enjoyed it and it’s sooooo TRUE!
300€?
I got my S2 MK3 for like 230 eur new (~$250), it's gone cheaper now than it was upon the launch.
What can I do if I don't have effects on my controller and I don't have a budget to buy currency a new one 4:49
Well, the best thing to do is stick to your current controller, learn how to mix really well, and make smooth transitions without effects! You won't always need to use them
@@djcarlo 👍🏻 thanks
While I MASSIVELY concur to stay cheap as possible for anyone starting out, here's are the counter arguments for spending more as you move forward:
1) In most good clubs, the DJ booth is already fully kitted out, and you are NOT allowed to bring your setup unless you're an absolute star.
Copy! Thanks for sharing your feedback!
@@djcarlo No worries man - Your videos are truly excellent! Best entry-level videos for DJs on UA-cam for sure!
Yoooo good as point about bieng bigger, i have big hands and I never considered that in the equation
In My eye controllers just give You more than CDjs with those pads like 1000 controller for example, is just way easier the only thing that You could be missing out are the screens cause You can do pretty much everything else, also i think in a club system for sure they sound better that's why they use it i think.
Here I am sitting at my desk and considering upgrading from my DDJ-SB3 to a Denon DJ Prime 4 ... but then I watch this video ... and now I'm like, "nahhhh my SB3's good enough for now!"
Videos like this help give me some perspective about my purchase. Thanks Carlo!
the main reason why I upgraded drom the ddj 400 to the DDJ 1000 is for the extra outputs and 4 channels. Now i can connect a laptop to the 4th channel and play song requests on party's.
Hope that's working out for you!
My friend bought 4 cdj 2000 nxs 2s and a djm 900 nxs2, leaves them in my studio so I'm pretty good at operating them and setting it up. Before that I would just use a traktor controller and it was totally fine.
One thing to consider tho is quality and reliability. I want to be confident my stuff is going to work everytime I go out there.
Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience! I wish you all the best!
Word brother! My first controler was a USD 70,- Aldi discount thing. I never had so much fun and I learned on it for several years.
I still have my DDJ-SB2 and I have had it for almost 3 years now. It has never let me down when I have to go gigs or to just take with me on the road and practice with . 😃😃🙏🏼🙏🏼
And respect, that you just give your honest opinion on those DJ Controller companies, its so true!
God bless you
I saw this video before buying my first DJ controller, and made me realize that I didn't need the most expensive one, but one that was affortable and friendly to learn to djing good, so, thanks for telling us this, because it is a fact that most of the people ignore and I'm still having a blast with my ddj-sb3, merry Christmas!!
Dope video. To answer your question, I own:
- Pioneer DDJ SR2 - Just to learn basic mixing and I can take it with me to private functions to make a few extra bucks
- A pair of Technic SL1200MKII and an AKAI AMX mixer - because ever since I started watching the Redbull Threestyle videos, I just wanted to learn how to use turntables and hopefully become a turntablist myself
I love my a Pioneer DDJ-RR ! It has everything you need for Djing )
yeah, I think same way :)
bro i have nothing but respect for you u are a really honest person thank you for clarifying this subject I own sb3 dj controller and I pay with serato but to record my mixer I use virtual dj
Also dj Carlo thanks a lot I started djing with my laptop and now a ddj400 all this with your help I might soon get my first gig
DDJ SB3 is honestly savage. I love my DDJ-SB 3 and use it at home. The XDJ-XZ I have, I love it to.
Same here! Both controllers are great!
Do you ever use your DDJ-SB3 during a gig?
@@silverdrumvideo for house parties and some small gigs yeah
Omg me to buy the traktor kontrol s2 mk3..lol😂🔥
Also I love what you put your example's for DJ's on its not the hardware its how you use the hardware and you don't need all extra to go hard. Music Selection. How to end on the music. What to play what not to play. What type of style of music you going to play at your next event. Pretty much I always tell up coming DJ's who hit me up. Keep up the work. Funk Up Salute Peace.
You are soooo on point! I learned to Dj on belt drive turntables (cheap) that skipped if you sneezed near them. (1984)When I got my first job at 15 I purchased my first 1200(1985). One year later I purchased my second one.(I was only making $3.25/hr and the 1200’s were about $300 back then)
But I noticed that I didn’t become a better Dj just a more comfortable Dj.
Thanks. Cheers.
Awww those are kind words! Thank you!
Thanks so much Decimator!! And thank you for sharing your story. The 2000s was a wild time for controllers, since a lot were in their infancy.
@@djcarlo thanks! Keep it up man, God bless.
You said it right. You have the best description for it.
Hey Carlo! Great video! Once more I totally agree with you! I love the way you think and thanks for sharing your experience! ❤️
The DJ equipment I'm going to get is the Roland DJ202, but for now the DJ-stuff I spent my last savings on was buying music! 🤘
Lydia Plain can I ask what was the reason you have to choose the 202?
So on that note thank you so much for your hard work and dedication I hope you grow much more than where you are at right now and wish you the best!
Wow! That’s great! Keep on creating music!
It's also good to pick up used gear to use as a back-up or at home practice set-up.
That is also true! Thanks for sharing that tip!
If you have or plan for a decent audio multichannel interface consider controller with a hardware mixer. This is especially worth it if you combine it with studio grade monitor speakers.
Thanks for this input and for watching the video!
I started my journey Listening to you about which gear to buy Which software to use You're a blessing An absolute shortcut I don't know many ways To express my gratitude With so much have learned from your UA-cam channel
I think it's so awesome that as big as you are you still take time to respond to comments this made my day sir
Woooow! Time flew fast! Thanks for sharing your experience! A number of beginner DJs will learn a thing or two from you!
Me too after using my ddj-200 about near 2 years, i start thinking of upgrading to ddj-400 or s2 mk3.
how good of a dj are you now?
I'm using ddj-400 with rekordbox. As a beginner I don't have any idea about what controller will help me to learn DJing properly. I bought this controller, because it's price is comfortable to me. Now I realised that practice and unique skill will made me a Dj, not the controllers
Definitely true! Keep on practicing and create more music!
Thank you for the honesty!!!! ... I may even go back to vinyl which would save me $1000 by not needing a MacBook!
Ohh that’s an awesome alternative too! Thanks for watching!
I bought a ddj sx because i wanted a 4 Channel Mixer and i Love it 👌
Your videos are so helpful and honest. So glad I found your channel. Keep making great content!
Daaaang, you got a good system upgrade there Jimmie! The industry climb is a struggle for real, but I'm glad you never lost your passion for the game
Haha! Thanks for your solid support! Cheers!
I love using somewhat broken equipment, it makes the moment more organic for me in a way
@@djcarlo thank you for the encouragement!!🙏🙏🙏
I bought an XDJ Aero off a friend... My thoughts about this subject are the same as yours: less is more, you can do pretty much everything you really need for mixing with a decent controller.
I still happily gig on my Aero if needed, I'm actually happy with it as it works as a standalone mixer and plays out of an USB stick alone, yet can't have waveforms on its old screen, which I'm OK with, as I saw it as challenge me to sharp my ears and know my tracks better, which I'm the end makes a better dj... I'm happy and proud of having it, even though is old.
Love the intro so much! Asian Gang!!! 💖🔥
Represent! Hahaja
When they finally got the DJ2go2 touch restocked, I bought it as a gift for my sister's Birthday.

enough said and real talk sir carlo! DDJ 400 user here...
That’s great that it works for you! That’s a mad skill actually! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the awesome videos. You do an amazing job!
Thank you for sharing! Really appreciate it!
Wow! Awesome story! Thanks for sharing it!
Hey Carlo. Just got my first controller. The Numark NVII. The reason I got such an expensive controller is because it has dual screens. Numark controllers cost much less than Pioneer and, as you say, they do the same thing with only minor differences, overall.
thats a cheap controller too!!!...i hate the jogwheels on that controller
Running 2 Numark TT's on DVS via Traktor 3. Bummer that my X1 Mk1 is no longer supported on the new Mac OS.
That's unfortunate! :(
hahahaha carlo you just hit the nail on the head here you are right i can do everything on my ddj-sb2 as the same with my expensive gear few years ago than the total setup new whould cost me around 3000 to 4000 eu and now second hand 70eu dj controller gives me the same fun like years before and even now i have even more control over my music because i have bigger screen with waves patterns i know when a beat kicks in when pauze comes in songs so eventually im more happy with my second hand 70eu controller than my big setup than :) greetings
great advice, you couldn't be more right. I also have a 502 Wharfedale mixer/preamp to reduce interference by keeping the old 3.5mm cable short.(has balanced outputs from mixer, and I am using the headphone output as my booth monitor 😉)
Have dabbled in rekordbox on my missus lappy, but have never used Serato, I like the thought of Serato Studio(just watched your live stream) so I guess my next decision on my rookie DJ journey will be do I stay the path and upgrade to its bigger brother the 400 or do I go different and get the Platinum fx as I do like the spacious 'look' not that I'm a shallow person and base everything on looks.
Thanks for the advice and videos DJ Carlo, you truly are an inspiration to all DJ enthusiasts beginner to pro
Sure thing!
i have a ddj 400 and momentarily trying to find out when and why I should upgrade. the only thing im missing at the moment is a balanced XLR output. idk if I should buy a small mixer just to concert unbalanced to balanced signal or if I should get a DI box or just get a bigger controller which has an balanced XLR output built in. can somebody help me?
I say just go for a bigger controller. Less extra parts, less possibility of things going wrong
what should i tell my parents. my parents tell me i wont be anything with a dj controller but my brother tells me im good when i play on his but i cant buy a dj controller for myself because my parents wont let me.
Save up, buy one for yourself, and see where it goes! I'm sure your parents are just trying to look out for you bud.
Still using my DDJ-SB3, Lodi! I am quite happy with it! I still learn little nuances with it when I watch your tutorials! Galing kasi ng Lodi ko eh!
I'm glad that you stumbled upon my channel! Thanks for watching! More content soon!
