Hiking in Beautiful Elk Country - Yellowstone Ecosystem

  • Most of the areas around the park are actually nicer than inside the park. You will seldom see other people. I have probably not seen a single hiker or backpacker in the backcountry in the last 5 years. I may see somebody on a horse from time to time but that is not often either. There is even more wildlife to be seen outside of the park. But I will not be showing locations in this video because of the giant elk that you will see here and the fact that hunting season will be coming later.

      @@StanMills Thank you, Stan. I don't record very many videos, but ride a lot. Nice to have the connection to Antelope Island. Mountain biking is still my passion. However, I appreciate all of your videos and hope to get out in the wilderness more often.

    Wow, you actually got a bull to bark at you. Thats very rare. He was unsure what you were. I've had this happen to me twice but never caught it on film. What a great shot. There won't be any elk up in there by September they will be busy breeding and being chased into herds. Awesome videography Stan.

    Beautiful hawk or falcon!! Thanks for all the commentary, showing the tracks etc. Cool that you see grizzlies in the same places every year. I agree with a comment about dense trees. We don't have wide open spaces here either. Wish we did. I think that's one reason we don't see much wildlife anymore. Thanks Stan!!

    My goodness, Stan! Just when I thought that your last video was the best ever, you’ve gone another BEST !! I totally enjoyed your comments at the 17:30 point where you were discussing about the grizzly in the brook. Your videos of the Roosevelt Elk, the crane, and the Indian Paintbrush were especially superb. Great video, superb editing! I can’t wait for your next hike. Take care; be careful.

    Similar to caribou behavior in the Sub-Arctic. During periods of low wind and high biting insect periods they sit on the snow banks where it is colder for the insects.

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  3 роки тому

      That is an excellent explanation as to why the elk stand in the snow banks. There are always a lot of questions on that. I never knew that. Thank you very much.

    Why do people keep thinking that there's few elk around? Is it about wolves?

    • @xhunter628x
      @xhunter628x 3 роки тому +2

      Yes. The elk have changed their behavior since the wolves were reintroduced. They aren't seen in many of the same areas and so some people believe there are few elk left. There are fewer but still a lot!

    I read a book on wolf repopulation and they said in the mid 90's the elk population in greater Yellowstone was like 20-25k and as of like 2016 it was about 8k. So that's the rub.

    • @7Saturdays
      @7Saturdays 3 роки тому +4

      Yes, but the high elk population led to overgrazing, which had a negative impact on the grasses and foliage, as well as to other animals who are equally dependent on those plants. The wolves have brought down the elk population which has, in turn, helped resolve the overgrazing. The wolves have been fantastic for the ecosystem as a whole.

    He should be making noise talk loud bears don't want to be spooked

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  2 роки тому

      The loud noise is exactly what “spooks” them! The human voice will always cause them to react with fear when they don’t know where it is coming from. Being quiet and respectful in their home is key to keeping everything in a calm state. You want them to react while in a calm state, NOT a fear state in which they think they are in some kind of immediate danger.
