Michael - great review. Can I be honest? I miss your videos on Blue Note Tone Poets and Classic series! Seems like you have went a different direction in what you review since maybe last Spring? Either way, thank you for your continued reviews.

ECM a cool label I need to take the plunge & grab some titles.
    Covers are so unique,
With ECM genres don’t matter it seems & that’s what attractive .
Thx for sharing this batch of records.
ECM Music doesn’t get much recognition in the so called VC.
Michael have a fun weekend 👌

You're right Michael: even during the peak years of the CD format ECM didn't completely abandon the vinyl LP. It must be said though that, just as the quality of their vinyl records during the '70s was exemplary, so too was the quality of their CD releases during the late 80s and after. There is a small number of ECM albums from the '70s that are almost musical unobtanium, like Michael Naura's 'Vanessa', Dave Holland's 'Emerald Tears', Bennie Maupin's 'The Jewel in The Lotus'. It would be great if the Luminessence series could revisit some of these. BTW, if you like Arild Andersen then you might like 'Green Shading Into Blue' (1978).

The John Schofield is really excellent. Some of the best drumming I’ve heard lately.

Enjoyed that you covered these. Was at the shop this afternoon, but these were not yet in stock. Found a used copy of Paul Motian - Tribute (Polydor/ECM), but I took a pass. I’m sure I’ll regret that.

A snowy and cold day plus „Glimmer“ might be near to perfection. Thx for this inspiring video and „Glimmer“ is ordered. It should be faster here at home than the snowy and cold day 😄

What I am looking forward to most is the the new album of the Gurdjieff Ensemble on ECM. I find this group and its very special sound fantastic. The CD is already available, the LP will be soon.

Maciej Obara is a polish sax player but he fits in that Scandinavian style of jazz perfectly, ECM did a great job with those titles, everybody should find something interesting. Cant' wait for the next of luminessence serries, especially Afric Pepperbird by Jan Garbarek 😍 Great video as always

The lucky thing is, that in some cases the originals are even cheaper than the repress and since your videos also state that often the original sounds better, i think i will go for the originals instead. Would be great if you would add some ecm titles to the OBC. Thanks in advance and cheers.

The Luminessence series will include some great records next year. Not just Jan Garbarek's 'Afric Pepperbird' but also Kenny Wheeler's 'Angel Song', the first 'Azimuth' album, and Zakir Hussain's 'Making Music'...

Ooh, need to get that new Arild Andersen album. Recently I finally got hold of an OG of his Lifelines album from 81 with Kenny Wheeler and Paul Motian and Steve Dobrogosz on piano. Great one, worth looking out for and grabbing if you see it! Had been on my wish list for over a year, and found a great copy in my local used record store here in Oslo. Had to give about 22 euro for it, but it was worth it...

As far as I know, they stopped somewhere first half of the 90's with vinyl. I guess around 1992/1993. Then they started with it again somewhere in 2015/2016 or something. I have some calaloges of that time and in the following years, they re-released some albums on vinyl and some of them for the first time. (that ECM 1880, Garbarek: In praise of Dreams was one, in 2019).
And on new albums, they did some great albums on vinyl, like Jakob Bro's Streams (ECM 2499 from 2016) and Nik Bärtsch's Mobile: Continuum (ECM 2464 from 2016) are such great sounding pieces of vinyl.

Most of the ECM releases sound great, but the Affirmation CD version (Arild Andersen Group) was a disappointment to me. Excellent music, but the recording is tiringly digital. In my experience, this is not a fault of the CD format. I'd be interested in the vinyl.

Except for one Nils Petter Molvær album in 1997 there wasn't released any Ecm vinyl from 1995 to 2007, as far as I can see (Discogs).

Die Frozen Silence ist eine starke Platte, wenn man Jazz versteht und lebt. Nichts für Darksideofthemoon- und Kraftwerk Romantiker.

The first album (Arild Andersen Group) is on my wantlist. Coming soon in my collection.
The second one, from Stephan Micus I already have it and like it but not as much as his first album with ECM. In any case I am a big fan of his and have a long wantlist for him. Really love his music and his ideas.
I am a big, big fan of Scandinavian jazz. Really like it. So the third and fourth album are on my wantlist.
I am also very interested in John Scofield's album after listening Solo, his album from last year.
I listen to these albums on CD. Since all these recordings are digital I find it more enjoyable to have them on this suport.
Regarding the mastering quality, they are ok, with a DR of 12 usually and low peaks but not as good as those done in the past by Jan Erik Kongshaug. I know that these days the ideea is that the recording to have more "punch", but in my opinion Kongshaug more "classical music" style approach was nicer. 🙂
Indeed a good musical batch. 🙂👍🎶

Michael, still appreciate the reviews but the channel, at least for me, has lost some of its charm, and the excitement of discovery and variety has faded. For example, you don’t review any VMP titles- why? I mean not even one! And they are doing some great things. I can’t believe you haven’t discussed the Miles VMP box set. It’s incredible. I’m getting the vibe that your channel has lost the charge of the early days and has sort of morphed into a “business” channel. That’s cool but maybe be more upfront about the reason for some of the glaring omissions.
