  • @Tcheera
    @Tcheera Рік тому +4

Watch the NBA mixtapes that have been released of old great players! I think that just seeing careers start to finish to understand what the play looks is fun....
I was watching Jordan at his peak - I still haven't seen a player in 40 years of basketball watching that even has come close to Michael Jordan in watching play and excitement. There are still MANY players I've been fans of over the years, and have appreciated, but no one has ever come close to Jordan in terms of how watching him made me feel... I still watch basketball. Right now my favorite to watch when he's healthy is Giannis on the Bucks.
The reason why I personally like him more than most other players is that he has a fire in him that reminds me of MJ and other players who tried so hard all the time to keep getting better. He cares more about winning than stats. He cares more about the team than himself. He could chase individual accolades... (and would easily be on track to do it if he were more selfish) but he ALWAYS goes for the team over just himself. But he's also dominant like MJ when it's needed.
He's not better than MJ, just different -- he has an amazing story so far. For me I think he's by far the most "wholesome players" and he is almost impossible for people to dislike unless they are just antisocial. In contrast there are other players with hard stories as well like Dennis Rodman -- his story is amazing, but... he has some issues. And if people decide for some of his stuff they don't want to like him, I would understand it, but IMO Dennis Rodman is about as raw and gorgeously vulnerable as a human can get.
I love a lot of players -- if you actually want a list I could give you one, but there are literally on MJ alone about 50 more high quality good relevant videos to watch where you'd still learn something new that would amaze you. With these other players it may not be as deep, but I think if I were doing it... I'd start with glossing over the players to get a feel, then deeper diving on all of them.

It is SO very refreshing to see someone who is an intelligent NON-fan of basketball honestly and clearly understand on a basic level the truth of this comparison. Too many are caught up in their individual fandom and the hype of this generation's media. Of course, Lebron is a great player, but he is not even top 5. Your last comment: "So beautiful to watch!" brings a tear and I will only say I was fortunate to watch great players, like Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Dr. J among many others in their day and as a contemporary of MJ ALL of his games including, having the great honor to see him in ALL of his "Dream Team" games, in person in Barcelona in 92. Michael Jordan's transcendence was beyond awe inspiring, beyond beautiful and to watch it was, moment to moment an exultation which begged the question: Will ANYONE ever do this again? Noone has!
On one criterion alone, the game today is by far much easier and less physical than the game in Jordan's day. As you, a non-fan so aptly noticed, under the basket in Lebron's time the area is wide open and in MJ's time it was crowded with great physical specimens fighting "tooth and nail" and that's the big difference between their eras in the game. Two, the rule changes have also made the game easier/softer and easier to score points. And these are, the 3-point rule and the elimination of the hand-check. The hand-check rule in particular is important, before today a player could use one or both hands on an opposing offensive player, to influence their movements and/or inhibit their ability to reach the basket inside or to shoot from outside. THE MERE fact that Lebron is an abysmal scorer beyond 3 feet from the rim, compared to MJ, given the elimination of the hand-check, speaks volumes!
BY THE WAY: That point in the video when you asked, "Did he just take a dive?" YES and that is one of my many complaints with today's game which I do not watch anymore. The NBA has become "Football or as we call it, Soccer" the flopping is rampant and Lebron is one of the leading performers today! Because of his over inflated popularity, referees are calling statistically more fouls against opposing teams when Lebron FLOPS/DIVES. He's a master of fakery!
Lastly, MJ made his teammates better, he worked harder than anyone in game play and practice. He was ruthless, players like Steve Kerr, a teammate of MJ (now coach of The Warriors) said he hated MJ at times, but MJ made him better. By contrast, Lebron has never been accused of working overly hard in practice, and certainly not showing up hours before everyone else, yet MJ & Kobe did, and so did Magic and Larry Bird time and time again. Lebron NEVER made his team better, he won championships by team shopping, leaving teams on a regular basis to go to teams with better players, Miami & the LA Lakers, both teams who had won championships during Lebron's time, so another analytic might be that he went to teams that had already won championships and he was GREAT because the team WAS already GREAT before he came! The Cavaliers with whom he won his 3rd. championship was a team he'd left with acrimony, claiming they didn't want to win because they wouldn't spend money to sign players he demanded HE needed to win. He shopped himself to Miami, a team that had won a championship already, then winning there he opted OUT of his contract and returned to Cleveland (Cavaliers) saying he felt bad about abandoning his hometown team and was returning to bring them glory. With his stature now established as a "Marquee" player, the team spent MORE money and built him a team. They were underdogs but beat the Golden State Warrior "Juggernaut" his one victory over them in 4 tries! He IMMEDIATELY LEFT Cleveland to go to the LA Lakers where he remains today, rather lackluster in the finals. One additional championship in that time, his 4th. While playing 20 seasons and ongoing, he's only won 4 championships compared to MJ's 6 in 8 seasons!
One final STAT: From a reply to another comment. MVPs: Regular Season MJ-5 Lebron-4 but as to Championship MVPs, MJ-6 Lebron-4 and statistically it gets worse for Lebron. Michael Jordan was 6 MVPs in 6 finals for 100%. Whereas, Lebron is 4 in 10 finals for 40%. Who's the GOAT?

LeBron only has as many points as he does because he's made so many attempted shots over the years. If past greats were given the advantages LeBron and current NBA stars have (better pay, better health care, etc...) then those past greats would have most likely had longer durations as players and thus much higher amounts of points accumulated due to their better shooting %.
Comparing "GOATS" in different eras is just not easily done. This video does a fair attempt and gives his reasoning with the stats backing up the arguments.
LeBron is only a good player of today's era. As shown, his shooting % is meh, he flops (fakes being fouled) around a lot (I saw a list that had him at 3rd most flopping player of today's game), and he tries to win by trying to make an all star team (Lakers) but he keeps falling short.

It's the same with fouls too...Lebron flops because it works in todays game, it's a different game. Don't blame the player, blame the league.

not to mention the fact Lebron took historically bad Cavalier teams to the conference finals and NBA finals before he joined the Heat...I don't care what his conference looked like (still loaded since the east ended up winning some of those finals), I don't think you could argue that Lebron elevates the players around him better then anyone in NBA history.

One of my favorite Michael Jordan stories is a recent interview where a reporter asked him, "Michael, do you think your 90's Bulls team could beat Lebron's Lakers?" He answered, "We'd probably win by 2 or 3." The reporter was surprised his humility. "You think you team would only win by two?" she asked. Michael Jordan smiled and said, "Yeah, well most of us are almost 60 now."

I think the Sonics were the least top heavy(star driven) balanced opponents the bulls faced. 64-18 record the same year as the Bulls went 72-10.

Everyone can have their own opinion, but for me it is clear and without question as I think it is not even close, Michael Jordan is the G.O.A.T.
I probably should not add to this but as an older guy who was born in 1968 I watched most of my Basket Ball in the 80's and 90's both College and NBA, but mostly College basketball. That being said the Game has changed and not for the better IMO. I think what I liked most about College sports was that players stayed at one school mostly and I guess I expected the same from professional players I came to be fans of, Especially concerning my favorite teams. In todays league (MLB, NBA & NFL) players move around so much for the money or sit out until there is a trade it just takes away from being a fan of your team and the players of that team.
The play Style has changed as well and not for the better. Sure there are "Physical Giants" and many new methods to keep players healthier extending there careers, but the game specifically the NBA was much more physical when MJ Played. Also the game was played in the paint close to the basket, which for me was more exciting to watch. Sure it still happens today, but I think there are more "one trick ponies" today and well ok, but that does not make the game better.
I guess I expect the greatest players to play 100% on both ends of the court, Offense and Defense. Jordan did that his whole career and I never thought LeBron was a complete basket ball player so GOAT status is not possible if I am asked. This video alone tells a clear picture why Michael Jordan is the GOAT and I see no argument to bring up L/James, who I think is just a great player.

LeBron played with the better players. LeBron is credited for starting the player made Superteams.
So when Jordan came into the league, his team was awful. Those Bulls was dubbed the "coke circus". So his opponents could just focus all their strategy on stopping Jordan, cause his teammates were not very good. As soon as Jordan got 1 single allstar teammate, it was over for the league. So, Jordan has only ever had 1 allstar teammate for his entire career.
LeBron had two different allstars in his first Cleveland stint, and couldn't win, so he band together a superteam that was stacked with 3 allstars. LeBron himself (the self proclaimed GOAT), Dwyane Wade (3rd greatest SG of all time), and Chris Bosh (11x straight perennial allstar). Yet they still lost to a team that consisted of only 1 allstar, while LeBron himself choked and got outplayed by the opposing teams bench player. This wasn't the only time that happened either. LeBron has lost many times while having the superior team.
Jordan has done more with less.

Some ppl think it’s all about the rings while others think it’s the accolades/stats/being the face of the NBA for a long time. To be considered on of the GREATS means the player has to make an IMPACT in the NBA.
Even when ppl make these videos or list, it’s up to their standards and criteria. Some ppl like myself don’t have a legit GOAT or #1. I have a group of players who I felt impacted the NBA and liked and that’s it.
This whole debate is literally ppl arguing to a wall.. nobody is going to listen to anyone at this point cuz everybody is set in their own opinions despite the statistics or proof.

No, EVERY generation has their own FAVORITE players, that's entirely understandable. In the GOAT debate, we all have to remove our biases for our FAVORITE players and look only to all of those criteria such as, stats, wins, percentages, position play, points, etc. and taking into account, context and analytics. Exactly as the documentary Jordan Vs Lebron did, without bias or emotion the fact is AND will remain, Jordan is the GOAT. Even if Lebron a GREAT player of the game, plays 25 seasons and bests ALL of Jordan's records statistically and otherwise, the SIMPLE fact that it will have taken Lebron 21, or 25 seasons of play to do so, only reinforces Jordan's greatness in doing it in 13 total full seasons of play. It's funny to me how Lebron fans always think this (teammate/help) is a good argument for Lebron, not understanding its a double edged sword. They always bring up the times when he brought a weak team to the finals, but glance over the other times he had a strong team but failed to win with it. You have to consider both scenarios. The fact is Lebron is very inconsistent with his "carry ability". This is in contrast to MJ who consistently won after he figured out the formula to win his first ring. Won two 3peats in 8 years.
Lebron has joined/formed more super teams than Jordan yet has less championships than he does. This is a serious blow against Lebron if you want to talk about help/teammates. Jordan stayed in his team and worked with what he was given and won 6 championships (two 3-peats). While Lebron has had multiple times to stack the deck in his favor yet still hasn't matched Jordan's ring count.

The only other HOF player to start on that 80-81 team was Parish. McHale was a sixth man on that team. DJ was playing for Seattle, I believe. Walton was still in Portland.
MJ, on the other hand, didn't get past the first round of the playoffs, or have a record over .500, until his fourth season. The Bulls didn't win a championship until his sixth season - until he got some help, in other words.
LeBron helped the Cavaliers improve dramatically early, but not nearly as dramatically as Bird helped Boston on the early years of his career. He also took nine seasons to win his first ring, as opposed to Bird's two.
Obviously, it's a team sport. Therefore no single player can win without considerable help. But there's no doubt that Bird's impact was, more productive, more immediate, and more dramatic, than any player in history. There's plenty of data and historical evidence to support that claim. In fact, it's pretty much an open and shut case.

Counter arguments to this Jordan video lol. Hot takes:
    - the only "checkmark" for Jordan is legacy.
    - longevity is skewing the statistics. As sample size increases, averages go down. Lebron has been doing it longer as just as well if not better
    - one category conveniently missing Teamate. Sure, Jordan willed his team to more championships. But LeBron, other than in Miami and maybe one year in Cleveland, had been willing teams to champion
    - which brings us to why Lebron considers that Cleveland championship to be his GOAT moment. He willed the cavaliers from down 3-1 in the series.
    - is 3 more rings really that much better once you have 3 championships? How many times you have to prove your a team/clutch player?
    - assists. Lebron will go down first all time in Points and most likely assists as well. That means he facilitated more points for his team than anyone else in history. That is what makes ppl consider Gretzky the NHL goat, not his Stanley Cup resume. Watch the Jordan doc, and you see a competitive asshole who probably made his teammates worse, compares to Lebron whose vision and scoring ability take him to another level
    - The "if" of Jordan retiring will always be an "if" and Lebron still continuing to play on a Jordan like level for almost double the amount of time should mean more than Jordan getting to go out on his own terms and being "lightning in a bottle" versus Lebron giving the game everything he had for twice as long means a lot more to me

"longevity is skewing the statistics. As sample size increases, averages go down. Lebron has been doing it longer as just as well if not better"
You just contradicted yourself here. If Lebron has been doing it "just as well if not better" then his averages should not go down. Either you admit that Lebron has gotten worse or don't claim that his longevity skews statistics.
      "one category conveniently missing Teamate"
It's funny how Lebron fans always think this is a good argument for Lebron, not understanding its a double edged sword.
While Lebron has had multiple times to stack the deck in his favor yet still hasn't matched Jordan's rings.
"which brings us to why Lebron considers that Cleveland championship to be his GOAT moment. He willed the cavaliers from down 3-1 in the series."
Winning a single series doesn't make you the GOAT. You need to do more than that. If "overcoming impossible odds" is what makes this accomplishment GOAT-worthy, there's actually better underdog stories than this who won an NBA championship. I don't consider this as much of an "underdog" story solely based of of the fact that Lebron (whos considered to be the best basketball player in the world) was on the other team. If you really believe Lebron is all that, then the gap was not that wide compared to the Warriors.
is 3 more rings really that much better once you have 3 championships?
      YES
How many times you have to prove your a team/clutch player?
More times than the current GOAT (Jordan).
"assists. Lebron will go down first all time in Points and most likely assists as well. That means he facilitated more points for his team than anyone else in history."
Yes, not because he's a better scorer (than MJ) or a better passer (than Magic), but because he simply played more seasons. It's simple as that. Total career stats, most of the time, only speak to longevity and not necessarily being the best at that stat. For example, John Stockton has the most total assists in history but no one considers him a better passer than Magic Johnson. Same with Kareen and Karl Malone, both have more total points than Jordan but no one considers them to be better scorers than Jordan (30.1 PPG & 10 Scoring Titles). If Magic (11.2 APG) and Stockton (10.5 APG) played the same amount of games, Magic will have more total assists because he had a higher assists-per-game average. Same could be said about Jordan and Kareem.
This is why career averages is better to use for these types of comparisons. It makes it a fair apples to apples comparison.
"Watch the Jordan doc, and you see a competitive asshole who probably made his teammates worse, compares to Lebron whose vision and scoring ability take him to another level"
Not only is this demonstrably false (Scottie Pippen clearly became better over the years WHILE playing with Jordan), its also irrelevant to the GOAT conversation. No one cares if you were an asshole or not, your stats, accomplishments and accolades will speak for themselves.
"The "if" of Jordan retiring will always be an "if" and Lebron still continuing to play on a Jordan like level for almost double the amount of time should mean more than Jordan getting to go out on his own terms and being "lightning in a bottle" versus Lebron giving the game everything he had for twice as long means a lot more to me"
I honestly don't understand what you were trying to go for here. I will just say that the only people I see who value longevity over peak are Lebron fans. In general and for most instances, people will normally value peak over longevity. I think this shows how bias can skew one's judgement.
Lastly, I wasn't an MJ fan growing up. My favorite player was Penny Hardaway and I hated Jordan because they beat my Magics. I just call it as it is, MJ is the GOAT.

@sohgeki2701 I'm saying lebron has had more time to have a lower average. Think of baseball stats. If you are 2/4 your ERA will look a lot better than any baseball player with a full career ever, but it's a smaller sample size with less room for things to go wrong
That's why I say Jordan was lightning in a bottle, it was a perfect timing peak of 10 years which makes for a great legacy but not GOAT status imo

    • @sohgeki2701
      @sohgeki2701 Рік тому +3

@@ethanpost9774 I understand your point about longer careers leading to lower averages, I actually agree with this point. I'm commenting on the claim that you made that Lebron has been doing it "just as well if not better". This implies that Lebron has either maintained his numbers or only increased. This does not match what you said about him getting lower averages. If its true that Lebron was consistently performing at a high level.. then your career average WILL NOT GO DOWN. If a player averaged 30 PPG consistently for 20 seasons consecutively, his career average will still be 30 PPG, it WILL NOT GO DOWN. The only way it will go down is if the player's number decreases over time.
So which is it? Does Lebron's average go down the longer he plays? OR is Lebron playing "just as well if not better" every season. They can't both be true.
I also don't get why you boil down MJ's peak to "perfect timing"? It almost sounds like you think MJ is lucky to string together so much success in a shorter amount of time. Instead of inciting "luck" as the reason, how about you appreciate how dominant MJ was at his peak due to his killer competitive nature and tireless work ethic. In light of Lebron's career, you should be able to recognize how hard MJ's accomplishment was. It's not easy being on top.

This video imo did a poor job and was clearly made by a Jordan fan. Showing only positive Jordan clips and picking out rare lebron bad clips. I haven’t made up my mind on whose better, but if a real “eye test” was done in the last part, LeBrons dominance would’ve looked way more similar to Jordan. A true lebron highlight video would show a better demonstration of that when compared to a Jordan highlight tape
