@Jacks Journale , the FLIR One PRO (Higher temp and better CCD) is a great option (especially lower cost than Snap-On). If one is worried about having the phone near the engine bay, you can use a lighting extension cable from the port to the device.
Just the full price of either thermal imager is enough to make me laugh at a Snapon rep. Fun and useful I imagine but I don't see it paying for itself very fast. Great video 👍
They are both really nice tools, and both out of my budget. I use a thermal imaging app on my iphone it works good enough for what I do for now. I just keep a wireless charger on my box and sit my phone on it when not in use.
Diesel world I love mine. Replacing DPF/DOC/SCR you can look for leaks after replacing. Older motors that won’t give you a cylinder contribution code because ya know it’s pre ecm days you can look for dead holes. Like you said looking for draws. Used it for finding hvac leaks behind the dash. Looking for boost leaks. During the winter when I check out farmer joes combine or baler or ant machine with lots of bearings and shafts I will run it for 30 minutes to a hour then check all the bearings and clutches. Hell I used it at home to see why my house was so drafty lol.
Flir announced about a year ago, they were releasing an automotive based thermal imager. I'm waiting to see if it's any better than existing value line imagers.
I agree 100%. Been using my thermal for years and it has a lot of advantages that make you feel the purchase is a good one. However, not a Snap-on. Flir all the way.
I don’t recommend the phone option reason being phones are changing so fast who knows if it will still be compatible in a couple years. I have the elite and find it very handy for things like heated seats/mirrors, it will actually show you the heating grid. I do find the recalibration message gets annoying real quick tho!
I think it would be hard to justify the cost of the Elite if you already had one but I bought my Elite in a heartbeat! I went to buy one just as it came out. My rep was trying to get me to buy the old one at a massive deal and I said no way. Definitely glad I did. I've found the larger screen of the Elite to be quite useful. Especially for seeing anomalies and getting the big picture feel. I grab this thing often and usually early as a super quick check to rule things out or to learn information. Even if there's only a small chance that I'd miss a problem using a Flir but catch it on the Snapon thermal imager elite... ya, I'll easily pay the extra grand for that... I've made so many calls with this thing and avoided making wrong calls that this thing has paid for itself multiple times over! Just my take though. 👍
I purchased mine secondhand about 2 years ago and it’s been collecting dust since. Every time I’ve grabbed it for certain jobs and it just fell short every time. Even the guy I purchased it from had saved pictures of people and his hands etc. so he clearly wasn’t using it for its intended purpose either
These thermal cameras seem like tools for diagnosticians who already have most everything else and have some money to burn. Can they be helpful in certain situations, yep. Most guys I've seen regret buying expensive thermal cameras and can only point to a few times they've come in really handy. If it works for you and you like it I'd say go for it I'm just not there yet.
I am sad to say that I have the snap on elite. It lives in the bottom of my diagnostic box and rarely comes out. I have checked a few defroster grids with it. Mainly I forget that I have it. And as Flat rate master said, the software is a little annoying. Seems to want to calibrate every time you move the unit ever so slightly and calibration takes at least 5 seconds. Its a cool tool, but I see it more of a toy.
The story of your Snapon dealer is as old as time. They really better start having more concern for their dealer’s success. IVe had more issue with Snapon dealers that any other tool company.
Mac is the worst around here. Which is funny, seeing the mac distribution warehouse is in columbus ohio. I have seen 1 mac dealer in the last 12 years. They just don't last. All the tool companies seem to not give 2 shits about their dealers. All they care about is that their tools are getting sold. A dealer doesn't work out or is too far in debt? To them its oh well. Lets churn out another. And its not cheap to get into the snap on, mac, matco , cornwell game from what i've heard.
Here's another vote for the Flir One Gen 3. I paid a bit over $200 for mine, and it works extremely well on the iPhone 7-Plus (large screen on the 7-plus) I already own. And don't let phone battery life be an excuse not to get the Flir. I have a Mophie Juice Pack (it's just a battery built into the phone case, with a stupid name) for the iPhone. Gives me about three days power without a charge. I saw the Snap-On Elite on the truck. $1,895 freak'n dollars!!?? Has Snap-On gone completely NUTS? I don't wonder that there are plenty of dealers going out of the Sanp On tool business. Their prices have gone just plane beyond reason.
Yeah the customer complained that you looked at the car for five minutes and charged an hour. But does he have a tool debt and a lifetime of investment in tools and knowledge. Not to mention the thousand dollars snap-off wants for a thermal imager. I think not. We buy our equipment to get paid in the long run. Faster time done properly equals more money. And the customer is happier with a quick efficient repair done right.
Oh yeah. For the home gamer the phone attachment might be a more do-able option. Not to mention one of the lower prices units that are out. The Snap-off is nice but for the money there are other options, it's ike that alot with Snap-off test equipment. I do really like their Hardline tools
No you should buy the new Eeth311 lol I definitely enjoy mine over those I liked it better then the flir tg275 which is specifically made for AUTOMOTIVE use....have you seen either of those? I've found that most guys that say thermal imaging is worthless are also the ones who cannot do diagnostic work worth a crap!! Lol great vid I appreciate your advice as usual!!!
They sell to more than individuals - Gov/Industrial/Mining/Oil &Gas on & on. Look at new trucks that cost $50-$90,000 dollars they are flying off the lots.
Joe Mama I liken everything to the price of beef jerky it’s like everything these days is a commodity and must be priced high just because everything else is
My answer is a simple no. You can buy other solutions for much cheaper. I use a Milwaukee hand held and also have a FLIR one for my phone. The snap on one would be good maybe for someone who uses one all the time where you use it more frequently. This is how these companies make lots of money. This call needs to be made by the guy buying the tool. I would say yes to upgrade if you have the original and use it a lot. I just think a shop should purchase tools like this not the individual tech. However you look at it it’s your money buy what you want. It’s not only techs but dealers wind up in trouble money wise, and this is what so many of the older techs and doing vids are trying to make you aware of.
Only thing about shops purchasing a tool like that is the abuse it will recieve. A "shop tool" gets treated very poorly, never put back and all the accessories get lost. When a tech buys their own, they seem to take better care of it. Half of our shop tools at the dealership have missing pieces or end up in a techs box, never to be seen again
what do you think about the snap on infrared gun? assuming it’s cheaper but won’t it work the same ? (P/N CTG671) not for draws tho but also didn’t kno can use that for draws that’s cool needed one couple days ago for this hybrid drawin power
On one hand if I buy that tool it would make finding hot spots on automotive electronics a breeze. On the other hand if I buy that tool my wife would divorce me. So many choices, so many choices
Been in this trade for 15 years and can’t say I’ve ever used a thermal imager. Or even seen anyone use a thermal imager. Must be an independent shop thing
Mr Flat tire... I mean flat rate master. First I want to say Snapon tools are very good high quality and mostly catered to automotive and electronics well... I shouldn’t say that. It’s catered to anyone an any jobs out there . It’s all good this thermal Snapon tools, but in my opinion shop smart not stupid, thermal can be bought with way more bells and whistles with less priced compared to Snapon dildo. My 2€ cents. Wahahahahahaha. Thanks for the videos, I do watch them and yes there are interesting subject you throw out here to us... bottom line it’s awesome.

I got the FLIR TG275. I'm not impressed. But I didn't spend Snap-on prices either. So not that big of a loss?
Just the full price of either thermal imager is enough to make me laugh at a Snapon rep. Fun and useful I imagine but I don't see it paying for itself very fast.

Best honest tool reviews here on the net, always waiting for the next one

Never even considered using it for draw tests... Maybe it's time to revisit a future purchase. Thanks
Looks like a tool the shop foreman should buy for the tool room. Keep you videos coming.
I still use the touch method for heat diagnostics 😬
Got a FLIR one at the shop and it’s great. Glad to see you recommending it over Snapon
Handy for checking to see if heated seats are working
Looooove it.. worth its weight in gold just for battery drains alone! Nice video man
I don’t recommend the phone option reason being phones are changing so fast who knows if it will still be compatible in a couple years. I have the elite and find it very handy for things like heated seats/mirrors, it will actually show you the heating grid. I do find the recalibration message gets annoying real quick tho!
I’d just use it for construction. Looking for cold spots and electrical loads.
I think it would be hard to justify the cost of the Elite if you already had one but I bought my Elite in a heartbeat! I went to buy one just as it came out. That's the same basic review of thermal cameras I've seen over and over I've been tempted several times to buy one but haven't been able to justify it
I been looking at flir for while I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on one next month temp control is common 0pace for what we been doing lately,
I keep my phone plugged in on my matco 6s tool box. Great video thx
I used a flir at work (steel making) for years a fantastic tool.
The story of your Snapon dealer is as old as time. They really better start having more concern for their dealer’s success. IVe had more issue with Snapon dealers that any other tool company.

CAT S61 Joe's Auto Electric
Could be useful for diagnosing CAT codes, when comparing temperatures

That tool is definitely out of the price range of the back yard mechanic

@@p.o.9964 I use a regular laser temp gun. Works just as well and cost 10% of what the thermal imager does
A thermal gun will work and if your put the time to map out a thermal image. you can plot your temperature points on paper.
No you should buy the new Eeth311 lol
I definitely enjoy mine over those I liked it better then the flir tg275 which is specifically made for AUTOMOTIVE use....have you seen either of those? Great and seemingly honest videos, thank you
My Snap On guy is tired of me laughing at their prices. They sell a $400 Flir tool with a Snap On logo for $1400. Rofl
I thought you're to give away one of those fancy toys, take care and keep up the good work 👍
I hate the phone option that’s why I bought the Milwaukee it’s faster stand alone solution.
I was waiting for it to fly out of your hand made me nervous , snap on so expensive how do they stay in business
They sell to more than individuals - Gov/Industrial/Mining/Oil &Gas on & on. Look at new trucks that cost $50-$90,000 dollars they are flying off the lots.
Their hand tools are second to known..Crazy thing is Matco tools are even higher priced ??
Joe Mama I liken everything to the price of beef jerky it’s like everything these days is a commodity and must be priced high just because everything else is
I picked up the matco
How do you like it? Thinking of getting one
U R they are nice
Our SnapOn dealer is also on credit hold. Their stuff is just too expensive.
Quite a lip biter regarding price disclosure..great clip !

Thanks for not being a fan boy and calling it like you see it.
Qual é o valor deste equipamento elite?
i wont the first snap on imager in a contest.
what do you think about the snap on infrared gun? assuming it’s cheaper but won’t it work the same ? (P/N CTG671) not for draws tho but also didn’t kno can use that for draws that’s cool needed one couple days ago for this hybrid drawin power
Can u please put link in description about alternative to Snap-on
Look at the first comment by me
Hope the guy that owns the Acura isn't watching 😵
🤣🤣
Neither you should get tr he thermal laser it reads temps higher than the thermal imager
On one hand if I buy that tool it would make finding hot spots on automotive electronics a breeze. On the other hand if I buy that tool my wife would divorce me. So many choices, so many choices
Wife doesn’t need to know what’s in the toolbox other than tools. The things we use to put a roof over your head and food on the table.
If you don't have to spend as much time and thought diagnosing vehicles, you'll have more time to spend with her.
Sounds like a win-win.
It's pronounced fleer like the sports cards.
I screwed with the pronunciation just for you😉
Nice 👍 from Aleskyfinis
Been in this trade for 15 years and can’t say I’ve ever used a thermal imager. Or even seen anyone use a thermal imager. Must be an independent shop thing
Milwaukee makes a very basic thermal imager, runs off a 9v,its about $170
Mr Flat tire... I mean flat rate master. First I want to say Snapon tools are very good high quality and mostly catered to automotive and electronics well... I shouldn’t say that.
