For my money, this is the very best Taupin/John song of all time. And that's sayin' somethin' lol. As a pro songwriter on staff with several Hollywood labels, I maybe see songs a bit differently than most... mainly seeing contrived phoniness meant to sell records. Maybe I'm jaded from knowing the unoriginal formulas in writing "hit pop songs," and I've been certainly guilty of this also. But 'Come Down in Time" is another animal, written by brilliant guys in their early 20s, writing from the soul, and combining weird and wonderful lyrics with an absolutely flawlessly fitting melody- that I know in my heart I could NEVER write!!

Thank you for your comments. I'm also going to add that this whole album is just brilliant, when both were and less jaded by the world at large, By far my most favorite album. Hell I was even a young man when this came out, or as my Son not never fails to let me know that I'm as old as dirt.

Bernie Taupin should be recognized as a true poet and in a hundred years, when he's no longer with us, I hope people understand what he gave us.

Could not agree more!! I'm a musician and songwriter as well. And it simply amazes me how Bernie would write the lyrics, and then mail them to Elton and he would sit at his piano and write the song. Just simply amazing👍👍

Absolutely without a doubt his best album. His voice was at it's peak with Tumbleweed Connection.

I just happened to pop this CD into my car a half an hour ago. It's a good thing I was in the garage because this song always stops me dead in my tracks has done since the first time I heard it when I was in high school back in the 70s. He did his best stuff when it was him and Bernie Taupin.

I first heard this album when I was thirteen in the seventies. Emotionally devastating and so beautiful. The oboe is so haunting like unrequited love. Still makes this old man shiver and cry.

I agree. "Haunting" is the perfect word. I was in my mid 20s when this came out & can't count the number of times I sat in the dark listening to the entire album. CDIT was my favorite song of the bunch.

In 1976, as a sophomore, I was introduced to this song by a super cute 8th grader who lived only a block from my High School in F.O. and we played music in her bedroom for hours.
I wish I could remember her name...

Every night this was on the turntable at uni. I would put the headphones on and play it over and over into the small hours. This was a very dark time for me after my father passed and I was alone in a basement apartment wondering how I was going to make it. I still have the album from 1975 and cherish it like a life vest that saved me from drowning. His best album in my book.

This was when Elton John had a very fresh sound that was like nothing else. The acoustic string bass particularly brought out certain moods in this song, yet not necessarily in the jazz genre, fresh, clean, clear, quite an arrangement!

sublime. among the greatest ever written . Back in the 1970's there were composers that would take you to a snapshot of a emotion or a life experience. Elton, Jonie Mitchell, Harry Chapin,Jm Croce, Seals and Crofts Simon and Garfunkel, Carly Simon the list can grow. My point is this, they used their own pain and emotion to DRAW YOU INTO THE MOMENT. you were there with them. Universal life experiences that are captured in a song. A story, a shared experience. Aside from Lady Gaga I see songwriting is a bygone talent.
