- Hi there, my beloved ICF-SW55 is back and better than ever. Originally purchased from eBay about 7 years ago, eventually the caps gave in - as expected. All fixed with new tantalum caps and LED backlight upgrade, calibration etc.
Still one of the finest looking shortwave portables ever - if not quite up there with the very best in terms of performance.

Great receiver.... I remember when this radio came on the market in Italy in the early 90s...
. The design was and still the best ever made for a portable radio..... At that time Sony was the number 1 worldwide.... For quality and technology....

I bought this back in 1998 in the Naafi in Blandford Camp when I was in training (Royal Signals training). It was so satisfying to hold and tinker with, I could spend hours just browsing the bands and it was exciting because I was there learning about HF communications and had this little thing to “confirm” my knowledge with when not in lessons. Really loved it and can’t for the life of me think what happened to it.. I’d be tempted to buy a new one but it’s going to have issues with its Caps….

I agree this one of best looking portable sets of all time. The performance is not too shabby either although Sony missed adding a sideband selectable sync detector.
As for the original illumination, it took many years for LCD backlights on battery operated radios to improve to decent levels. Low drain high brightness LED lamps were at least 10 years in the future in 1993 when this set was introduced. Cheers!

you were lucky to find someone who not only could do it but was willing to do it. Most repair places won't even touch older stuff like this.

I have been wondering to get one of these as there’s one for sale here. I have numerous ICF7600D’s and DS, G etc even my original 2001D which was the best portable I ever had.
It's not as good as the 2001D (I also have one) but it's probably one of the best designed Sonys...73
@@OxfordShortwaveLogI finally got one! It’s an untouched fully working set with all the accessories in a large plastic/leather type case.
Now that backlight is awful 😆 I need to get this one fixed up so I can see the screen in Winter.
cracking radio i bought a sickly one for too much money HI and recapped and aligned it myself (an utter PITA btw) but what a result matched with a sony AN1 active whip its bloody brilliant . never sell it they certainly dont make them like that any more!
