I went out and bought two different colored 50’ hanks of 3/8” dia. Cord like this to practice knots. Like you said , it has a nice stiffness and doesn’t irritate your hands while practicing knots. The second color helps with two ropes. Together the 2 hanks cost me $11.00.

      1) You need a pipe, to make big bight - clove hitch is the knot for that. 2) Knot slides, and could eventually loosen, unless under constant tension.

Thank you. I've never seen it tied that way. My Grandfather was a Merchant Marine in the Spanish American War, and he taught me many knots when I was a young child. My parents told me years later, that "Pappy" had taught me how to tie a Bowline when I was still in diapers and his favorite arithmetic problem was 6 x 7 = 42. These are two things I remember about my Pappy.

I disagree about it being the easiest. I seen a video that made it so easy that when you do your loop, your pointer finger already has the end prepared to go through the loop.
Basically at the loop you're half way in one motion.

My favorite way to teach a bowline. I tell learners to pull the standing end through like they are tying an overhand knot. Then pass the running/bitter end through the bight they just created. Fold the end back on itself and tug on the standing end. It was the first way I could consistently remember how to tie a bowline. Rabbits, trees and holes never quite made sense for years . Easy to tie under duress this way as well. RIP Lt. Daniel Irvine Glen Echo FD who taught me this 43 years ago.

I have been doing this knot my whole life. I learned it very different from this because we always used it to tie up horses. Always used a bow at the end so it is one pull to get loose in case of emergencies, since a horse can get caught up in a rope if it spooks or something goes wrong. It also works great when you don't want a knot to tighten around an animals neck, (or whatever), and still one pull to get loose.

I've tied the knot both ways many times. depending on circumstances.
and when I teach it, I teach it both ways. so that the student has a good understanding of the not itself and it's versatility.

Ashley’s Book of Knots has long been considered the encyclopedia of knots. This is an interesting, simple and excellent way to tie the bowline although I taught myself the old fashioned way. When I was involved in the Boy Scouts I recommended Cassidy’s The Klutz Book of Knots. It comes with different colored lines and the front and back covers are perforated to have a space to practice. They could get Cassidy’s at the Scout store. I would add the one handed bowline knot and the heaving line knot. Animated Grog Knots online and the app are fantastic as well. I love knots and am always learning. Thanks for this new trick!!

Ashley’s book is my favorite knot book and the history he tells of the different knots makes it a must buy. I started this channel as an alternative to knots by grog since they charge for the app now. Another good book for knot tiers is the Morrow guide to KNOTS, great illustrations. For the Rescue Technicians, Rhodie’s Guide to Rescue Knots should be on their shelf. Pat Rhodes is the best rope practitioner I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and being trained by.
