Cooper. A legend in St. Helens along with Mike McClennan. The game slowed down for him. One of finest distributors of the ball I've seen. And his game intelligence was way ahead of everyone around him. Top player. Speaks volumes that a guy so slow currently holds the club try scoring record. 6 in 1 game. And I was on the terraces when he got them.

That has awesome Dave thank you. My dad played along side Shane at Mangare east, as a young kid i think i was about 8 years old i went to every game, training session. My father still has wonderful memories of that Hawks team and seeing that team photo bought back a lot of good memories. Shane Cooper is a legend.

I can remember playing a half time game for Glenora as a kid on Carlaw Park. It was a semi final and all us kids forgot about the game and were more interested in looking at the crowd.

Great interview. 27-0 is still the worst final I've been to. That said, it is a badge of honour among Saints fans of a certain vintage. Shane is one of my favourite Saints players of all-time. Terrific footballer, clever, a bit grubby, always first chasing the kick and played above his weight. Absolute inspiration for those of us less gifted in the physical department. I remember when we heard we'd signed him and got to watch that test v the Aussies when he dropped the goal from dummy half. Had to wait until it came into the local video shop a week or two after. Heady days :)

That Premiership winning team remains one of the best we've ever had. Great team, fully deserved to win the league that year.

And on that six try haul, I don't think there was a single try that was further out than ten yards. Masterful play.

It may not of been his first game but we played hull in a midweek game, their coach had a crash on the way down and shane scored about 5 tries if i remember rightly....also the 13-8 defeat to wigan was 91 at wembley, 1990 was the 20-14 semi loss at old trafford...

I remember watching alot of games mostly Widnes saints Leeds and I often look at a player and see what clubs he played for and who he was playing with him some players had been with 8 clubs or more including 2nd and third division it's amazing to me to see who was playing where and when I usually only watch ,1980s or 90s before super league
