- "Saturday Night Live" has seen some great comedians perform at its historic Studio 8H. But part of the reason why it’s such an iconic comedic institution was because of its seven original cast members. One of its most talented original members was John Belushi. During his time on the show, Belushi developed a series of characters that received immediate success. His sketch portrayals of Ludwig Van Beethoven and Henry Kissinger are still some of the most hilarious characters on "SNL." But as quickly as his star rose it also quickly faded out because Belushi struggled with drug addiction, which eventually led to his death in 1982. Here are the tragic details of John Belushi.

I remember in the late 70's when my parents let me stay up to watch SNL, and I'd mostly watch my dad watch, because he was such a serious hard working, and "no nonsense" type guy, and Belushi would just have him rolling. To me that was great just seeing him loosen the F up for a change, and that was all thanks to John!

Rock concert, than Chiller Theatre on Saturday nights religiously.. No SNL.. I wasn't into comedy.

Seeing Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray at the funeral and the grief on their faces just breaks my heart. I was only 5 when Belushi passed away and too young to really understand much then, but I remember watching him on SNL on our old wood-panel set.
Especially Bill Murray, that hurts every time

John Belushi was greater than life. He literaly burned to death like a candle. He consumed all his life in a few years. Several celebrities did that.

I was born in 1977 so I had seen reruns of his SNL skits such as the samurai as an example and movies such as Animal House. I can name them all. My father was a fan so showed them to me and I was hooked. Later I shared with my own son who is also a fan of SNL who loves the cheeseburger guy and animal house. It’s safe to say that the world lost a legend. While I didn’t get to know you Mr. John Belushi may you RIP 😪❤️
According to John's brother Jim, he also suffered from CTE, a neurodegenerative disorder associated with sports injuries, due to numerous concussions sustained during football games.

John will always be missed, the last phone call Dan Aykroyd got was from John and he didn't get the chance to talk to him, then he passed away 😔
I saw the movie Continental Divide in 1982 and totally loved it. Belushi was a really good dramatic actor in it.....
I've hung out and trained with Bill Wallace on several occasions, but I never asked him about finding John that day. It just never seemed right. Bill trained John and Dan as well as Elvis and as of today probably thousands of other martial artist. He's one of a kind and has a great sense of humor, which I'm sure drew him to John and Dan.
Still miss Belushi. He broke the mold.

There were few like him and I still mourn the loss of him.
My mom was a librarian at the Wheaton library. She said the brothers were a little different from one another. John was a very big clown and his brother was more responsible and calm. Their mother was a very nice lady. The brothers came into the library often. I love John. I was always convinced that SNL was john and vice versa. Still am.
I wasn’t alive back then, but I really like his stuff. Sad that I will never know a world where he was alive.

I really liked "Continental Divide." It was a good movie. I thought it was his second best, following "The Blues Brothers."
Actually, I believe "Neighbors" was one of the funniest films ever made. Give it a second viewing, please. It's extremely quirky and outlandishly humorous. Keep an open mind.
In case anyone was wondering, the film Belushi was going to be in was Ghostbusters. Akroyd called to tell him about it, and Belushi was excited to learn more about the movie.

The reason why John Belushi wasn't getting many hits was because of his infamous drug habit. His drug addictions costed the studio a lot of money and filmmakers were afraid of losing money and weren't going to risk it.
He should've taken a summer vacation with his wife to get him to full recovery after a heavy tight schedule dragged him down, and them come back with a vengeance of comedic hits.
You even forgot to mention that Robert De Niro and Robin Williams were there that night before he died. Robin Williams felt a lot of guilt for Belushi's death, which caused Robin to go sober for the sake of his newborn son, but the depression stayed with him.

I had a friend who was a roommate with Robin before he got famous, and he told me Robin had a pretty bad coke habit even back then. It got worse as he gained fame. It took John's death to wake him up, which is sad.

Belushi was so good in Animal House, I think he pretty much paved the way for movie prospects for SNL members who came after him.

I was born in 85. My dad was a huge John Belushi. I have saw other documentries on him, I don't understand how come she was charged with voluntary manslaughter? She didn't know it would kill him? Maybe something else did and it was a tragic accident that helped speed it up?

The first 5 seasons of SNL (1975-80) were the greatest of all and can never be replicated thanks to performers like John Belushi. Though Chris Farley can close, nobody could topple his momentum.
Ace Frehley was friends with jim as well but has gone on record saying that jim wasn’t really big on needles plus he had visited him about a week before he had died

I own and love the movie "Neighbors". I thought Dan and John were great. And I love the way it ended.
I just want to see the show. We all knew what happened to Belushi. We don't need the PSA at the end. Yes, there are people who need to hear it, but only people who want to change will ever change. It also breaks the tone of the show's wrap up, right in half.

Because of the impact he had, I actually thought he done much more than this.
'Animal House' was a monster hit comedy. I actually can't think of another comedy that was a hit on that level since. Not only popular but culturally impactful many teen comedies since owe much to its anarchic style. I live in the UK and we started having Toga parties inspired by that film and I think people still have them to this day. They may have been a thing in the USA prior to that movie but they were introduced to the UK and party Islands in Europe by 'Animal House.'
Then 'Blue Brothers' was a cultural phenomena. The band from the movie had a number 1 album and it became a Broadway, West End and touring smash hit musical all over the world.
I remember 'Neighbors' bombing and I read at the time the parts had been written the other way around but the only agreed to do it is they could play against type. Belushi didn't want to be typcast and the zany guy. I'm not sure playing the straight man in a movie with a zany character rin it was the best idea. Like Jim Carey playing straight opposite a role clearly written for him.
Definately gone too soon. He was definitely beloved and still 'hot,' at the box office had he found the right material.

Interesting. I had no idea he was so much into coke while filming the Blues Brothers. I got a feeling he'd be one of those who would lose "his edge" after quitting drugs.. though would have had it all along if he never started using.. musicians seem to get better when they quit (Gregg Allman being the best example). Sad to lose John.. he was one of the best. I wish I could find a video of him talking about tornados... ~"They tell ya' to get in the SW corner of the basement, but that doesn't matter. if it wants to it'll GET YOU". Always good were Weekend Update lead ins to falling off the chair.

He has a grave stone on Marthas Vineyard, I came across it when visiting the Jaws locations.

I live walking distance from the gas station scene , standing behind barrier's u couldn't get pass . Waiting for gas station to blow up . John says hi to crowd , I hold up my Harp , he hits me on let shoulder. Alright man , he says to me and walks on . Cool moment ! My girlfriend said when the station blew the apartment building shook and the lights went out . Twenty something years later at concert to see his brothers band play . Jim leaves stage runs down main Isle . I'm sitting next to Isle with ralling in front of me . Jim looks at me than ralling , jumps up on ralling right in front of me playing his Harp . I put my right hand up to help him down , he waves it off and grabbed my left shoulder ! The same shoulder his brother had touched so many years earlier . That's my story and I'm sticking to it !

Actually chevy chase said it didnt matter, that Lorne Michaels wasn't thinking about him seriously, it could go either way. Chase said that he wasnt essential, more than implying that Belushi wasnt the center or ringleader. Thats what he says now about it all when it comes to the first season cast hiring.Gilda radner said she was 'sitting shiva because lorne hasnt hired John ". And Dan Aykroyd said Lorne didnt want to hire them both because those two would be partners in crime, rebels, which they kind of ended up as but it was fun and exciting.
