The ear-destroying sound design is a problem that cropped up in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GCN, and only got worse with further re-releases. On the Dreamcast, this problem almost doesn't exist.
...almost.
Actually the Gamecube version of Battle was just like the Dreamcast original. Oddly enough, it wasn't until the HD ports on PS3 and 360 where the sound got REALLY bad.
Lmfao. Pumpkin hill theme used for Knuckles in sonic boom.
Also. The only good thing that came out of Boom is Amy's design and Sticks. And Eggman's mustache.
boom eggman is great

Sonic starts green hill zone:
"Aw shit here we go again"
2D Sonic wasn’t about speed, it was about momentum. Speed was a reward for mastering the levels and avoiding the hazards to keep the momentum going.
Thank you! This misunderstanding about Sonics gameplay is why recent titles have had very hollow speed where SA1 & 2 had very meaty and rewarding speed. It’s like Style in DMC or E-Extreme stealth done perfectly in MGS.
mommentum = mass*velocity. Sonic's mass is static so if it's about mommentum then it's about speed. Checkmate
Sonic 3 & knuckles managed that REALLY well in hydrocity zone and angel island zone!
@@Kanic12341 just because you have good momentum doesn't mean you're going fast. Sonic definitely is a game about speed but if you're good at the game you'll hardly have to slow down and platform.

would as many people hate sonic unleashed if they made the night time and day stages come in equal amounts, changed the werehog to knuckles, and called it "sonic and knuckles: return to angel island"?
Now that's a brilliant idea!
No.
You should work at Sega. You actually know what the fuck you're doing.
n
maybe if the brawling portions weren't so sluggish and didn't play like ass, but then again it would amount to "if sonic unleashed was not sonic unleashed" at this point
So Sonic is basically the child that Sega raised solely and poorly to fight a family feud based on a competition. When they lost that competition, they literally found no other use for Sonic than to just be part of the family. They would support him as any parent would with just enough to keep it alive and thriving, at least within legal standards, but it would never suffice to support the child. After its angsty teen years, awkward phases, and shitty friends and fans come and go by, only when it turns around 19-20 does Sonic realize it can do better, and tries its best to bring itself into the public light again. Those dreams come crashing down when Sega makes it blatantly obvious that they never really cared, give it just enough money for rent at another developer, and kick it out of the house.
I'm sorry, I need to go for a walk.

GleamingGarmore imagine! Oh, oh my!
Grunting Skunk there is a CLEAR bias on display throughout this video. The successes of good levels are downplayed and many wonderful Sonic games are excluded all together. If Sonic Rush does not count, Sonic Boom should not count.
Grunting Skunk don’t worry, we’re cool!
sooooo basically the entire idea behind this video seems to be that Sonic "was always bad" because he is "too fast" and game developers just get tired of making enough stuff for him to do after they finish the first level of a game.
like there's no planning at all. they just sit down one day and start making Green Hill zone, bit-by-bit, and it's fun at first, but then by the time they get to Marble Zone they get tired and things just kinda fall apart from there. whatever you say...
I'm with you
Like I find this video insulting to the game designers. And i don't know what they mean by "flow," to me Stardust Speedway, Flying Battery and Chemical Plant have more flow than the first levels of those games.

+MrDrProfessor4 George is dead, then
why?
+MrDrProfessor4 Dude, that's exactly what I was thinking.
+Bucketninja I think it's because of the way Super BunnyHop is more critical of a number of aspects of, particularly, the Adventure games that Johnny praised in his reviews (mainly the control and the level design ethos). However, it's just another way of thinking; I get the feeling this person is more of what Roger Van Der Weide described as "The Nintendo way of thinking", rather than "The Sega way of thinking". It doesn't make either person 'right', per se, it's just another angle on the matter.
+Bucketninja Johnny might be the biggest non-furry Sonic fan on UA-cam.
The last one I put any time into was Unleashed. The werehog stuff is rancid but, yep, the running bits were great - especially if you go for the speed runs. Turns it into a white-knuckle run of good timing, learning the levels, and high precision movement. More arcade racer than platformer and that's fine by me. I'll have to give Generations and Colors a go one day.
+Game Maker's Toolkit If you liked the running in unleashed i REALLY recommend generations at least, because it's all the good parts of unleashed but enhanced, and good level design in addition in a lot of levels, especially modern sonic which has like a lot of alternate routes. Story is mostly there as an excuse but most levels are great (except maybe for planet wisp but even it's frustrating aspects are at least somewhat entertaining...)
Go for PC version of Generations, then look up the Unleashed Project mod. Now you get all the good stuff of Unleashed and Generations.
"With responsive inputs for once (in the whole series so far)" when talking about Sonic Heroes is to this day one of the craziest takes I've ever heard in my entire live.

+Commander_Schnitzel they're not bad, but i feel sonic team just pasted the werehog on kratos and made them. If you put a night stage side by side with god of war gameplay, you would think they were almost similar
Haedox likes them
Instead of a weird werewolf gimmick they shouild've made Sonic and Knuckles 2, with speedy sonic levels and knuckles beat em up levels.
There is one huge issue with this video. You forget you're talking about the actual levels and then you go off on a rant about whether the game is good or bad...
hypa! Agree
hypa! yeah, true
hypa! Atleast the actual game rants are in depth which is good.
hypa! Yes, it's like E3 this year, when Microsoft forgot that they were supposed to be talking about games, and, randomly, cars.
Because we care about Cars.
Not only that, but he rants about the stories of the more recent games far too often, which makes it pretty obvious that he specifically has something against them.
Gotta love them first levels in Sonic.
I stumbled across this video because of YT suggestions and I'm glad I did! Clear narration and transitions keep it interesting and those punchlines/edits keep it entertaining. Seriously I didn't even realize I watched 40min of Sonic levels lol
About the topic. Great analysis both of the games themselves and the context behind them. I think it's really interesting to see how the saga (unconsistently) progressed (or regressed lol), besides all the jokes/memes on Sonic. (Even the fb/twitter pages are a meme, they're self-aware) This is a topic I recently talked about with my bf, too, and we were kinda sad to see how Sonic turned out and how it's such a waste of potential by Sega. :/
On a funnier note, I was really waiting for when you'd get to 2006 and I was NOT disappointed lmao. Laughed more than I should've. I wish you talked about the first level of Silver and Shadow, too (especially Silver and the telekinesis gimmicks), but you already said so much about the game I guess we really had to move on lol. Also, as someone else commented, I can't wait to see what you'll have to say about the Sonic movie 😂
sonic adventure 1 was amazing.. i got it 9.9.99... when it came out it had no rival
Are you considering making this a series? "The First Level of Every Halo" or "The First Level of Every Zelda"? I realize that some franchises are going to be harder to work with than others, but I think you're on to something with the whole first impressions matter angle.
+Christian Hansen i like this idea
After watching the whole video, I agree with the major points. My thoughts probably echo a lot of gamers and Sonic fans: It's too bad we can't have the fun engaging lag-free first level designs and all the lessons learned put into the "next" Sonic game. I guess time will tell, but I think it already told us.

I actually think the characters in Unleashed looks the most fitting with a cartoon hedgehog.
Brimblam They kind of are, but the sonic characters and human characters look like they're made by two completely different concept artists. The humans look like they're from a kid friendly 1990 education game
The whole artwork in Unleashed was great.
Actually, let me rephrase that: The whole of Unleashed was great. Yes, even the werehog parts. It made the game varied and those were actually decently made. I find Generations, with its lack of gameplay variety (sorry guys, but classic Sonic is just pure nonsense. There was absolutely no need for it) to be much more boring and one-dimensional. Generations was nothing but a nostalgia trip.
Fernando Gil
No, no, those damn human designs looked so painfully awful. The werehog sections, while it keeps things varied, over stay their welcome (there's actually more night stages than day time stages). It's platforming is barebones simplistic and the beat em' up is also uninteresting. It felt like I had to force myself to play through the night time stages.
Honestly, the game is a mixed bag. I want to like it, but it's damn werehog stages just bore me out. Well, at least you enjoyed it.
They looked way better than anything done before.
Realistic humans with cartoon animals look fucking bad.
Cough SA 1 and 2 Cough
Brimblam ...Can't argue with that. Could had been done better though.
Sure Sonic Adventure was an amateur show, but this was Sonic’s first exploration of 3D video games.
It wasn't an amateur show tho, he just talks shit on the whole video... And don't even stick to his main point, to review the first level.
Done horribly.
Y'know, when you do something new, you have to do it good.
@@caligulas430 have we played the same game?
@@TGHunter I think so.
It's ok to like a not good game, but don't put your point of view as objective.
@@caligulas430 No, its not point of view, and yea its ok to like a bad game. I know that, I like 06 afterall. But i can see a game without my opnions or point of view.
Sonic Adventure is a good game, 7/10 i would say, and last time i checked, 7 is good. Not bad and not incredible, but good.
Sonic Adventure tho had suffered with the ports, which SA2 didnt suffer that much.
The ports for Adventure 1 are indeed bad, they break the game and make some stuff really bad and jarring. But if you, like me, has a dreamcast and knows how Sonic Adventure plays. Then i can assure you that it wasn't just a bad game or an amateur show, it was a shoot, like most games at the time.
Some stuff really didn't aged well, like the motions in the cutscenes or even some missions requirements. But something that doesn't age well doesn't mean that its bad.
And stuff like "Oh but the camera was bad" Well.. yea, DX port made the camera worse, but on the original game, the camera is pretty much normal, just some bad placements in some cases. But that even Mario 64 had. It was a new concept to 3d games.
Watched the entire video, and as someone who was actually alive for the first sonic game and old enough to enjoy it, I loved this video. It's so true, and so sad that such a wonderful concept has never had a perfect iteration.
Uh... You know Lost World has a run button, right?
I know right? He didn't really take the time to learn the controls.
WAIT WHAT A RUN BUTTON I DON'T THINK IT'S SONIC
It's Sonic! It shouldn't NEED a run button!
Bobby Blair
The Wii U gamepad has a touch screen, 2 analog sticks, a d-pad and twelve buttons. There's no reason they can't dedicate a single button to movement speed when people have been bitching for over a decade that Sonic games are too hard to control. I would have preferred a WALK button instead, but there's nothing wrong with the concept.
After all, I never hear anyone complain about the boost or spin dash buttons, and they're more or less the same concept.
Um......
"Cack-a-phony"
Another word - this time the innocent "cacophony" - bites the dust on Bunnyhop (it's pronounced "ca-cough-en-ee").
+Cian Gaffney Yeah I caught that too. It's a result from reading a word, maybe in books or something, and never actually hearing it spoken. Before I heard some one actually say 'epitome' I thought it was pronounced the way it was spelled, 'epi-tome.'

I think you missed the mark of what the first level really does... at least in many of the well-designed Sonic games. Sonic 1 admittedly did things differently, but it was the ONLY classic game to really fully lean into more linear puzzle-platforming, especially in Marble Zone.
Being "skilled" at a good Sonic game all comes down to mastery of the physics and controls, and admittedly a lot of rote memorization, as well as experimentation to find what the best routes are. In the first level, you don't really NEED any of that. You can mostly just hold right and jump while EXHILARATING things happen, showing off how fantastic the engine, the momentum, and the speed all feel.
This serves two purposes. For one, the first zone needs to get its hooks in you and make a good first impression. But also, it gives you a taste of what it FEELS like to be skilled. The game stops letting you breeze through it after that. But when you play enough and GET skilled, stages like Mystic Cave, Red Mountain, Final Rush, and Generations' Crisis City don't just match that initial feeling, they become way, WAY more exhilarating than Green Hill ever could be, because now, you're EARNING that speed.
The point isn't just to get through the game, it's to play it enough that you blaze through it with this weird manic grace. There's no other platformer quite like it, and I think that contributes so much to Sonic's lasting appeal, even through all the ups and downs and all-arounds.
EDIT: At least, that's how I play Sonic. Your mileage may vary, because ANOTHER part of the wider appeal of the classic games is that they can ALSO be played more experimentally, exploring all the different routes and gimmicks and looking for hidden stuff. Sonic 2's level design didn't push this as much, while CD's levels were MUCH more inclined toward exploration and 3&K struck a nice balance. If you're trying to collect the Chaos Emeralds, you'll tend to be doing more of this. George, from your description of Mushroom Hill, I think this may be more your style.
EDIT 2: ...and it seems like by the time you got to Generations, you'd figured out exactly what I was trying to say here, and articulated it better than I did, anyway. xD
Yea, with all its issues, I cant find that feeling in other platformers and thats why I call sonic like a subgenre of platformers. Its mostly because of slopes + physic + alot of gameplay elements in sonic games are just there for the spectacle of moving through it and some will require skills (mostly by moving faster in it) to use the thing to gain new heights. And the games start getting way more fun when you are good at it and start doing combo of gameplay elements with style. Its a good template with flaws that can be pushed farther and fixed.
UP DOWN ALL-AROUND, DON'T KNOW QUITE WHAT TO DO, TO GET THROUGH!!
Reminder that Sonic Boom was made on CryEngine.
You know, an engine that doesn't support the Wii U.
What the hell.
+DylanYoshi That's because originally Sonic Boom was designed for next-gen and PC, not for the Wii U. When Sega announced the Wii exclusivity deal with Nintendo, most of the game had already been completed. Big Red Button had to spend the time they usually would fixing and polishing the game to port CryEngine to the Wii U and implement Wii U-specific features (like gamepad support).
So, yeah, another example of Sega's mismanagement of the franchise.
*****
You can easily blame Nintendo for being terrible with third parties, as evidenced by the lack of CryEngine support, and you wouldn't be wrong, but I do think Sega is far more to blame. If you're going to make a huge change to the product like this, the game should be delayed to allow for extra polish. This isn't rocket science, it's basic QA.
+DylanYoshi Yeah, I completely agree, and that's what I was trying to convey. Sega absolutely should have given them more time to complete, or given them early warning that this deal was in the works, or negotiated that Sonic Boom wasn't part of the deal, or... there's a number of ways they could have mitigated this. Nintendo's really just an unfortunate bystander.
+DylanYoshi I'm still not sure how CryEngine apparently doesn't work when Crysis 3 managed to run on the system. It only didn't come out because EA threw a hissy fit over Origin being rejected by Nintendo.
UltimaKeyMaster
Cryengine CAN work on Wii U, the issue is that is has no native support for the Wii U. That means the developers have to port over the engine themselves, and that's a very bad thing for any game with a strict release schedule like Sonic Boom.
i never even played sonic and i watched the whole video. Nice work!
your rain of complaints about SA1 surprised me...
oof, don't watch the super friends playthough of it then. While Woolie and Liam begin the LP very excited to revisit a childhood favorite, they keep arguing with Matt who kinda hates it, but slowly even they turn on the game for being a hot janky mess. The final episode where Woolie realizes even the super Sonic transformation he had been antecipating was twenty times lamer than he remembered and his heart breaks live on video is amazing to witness
After Sonic and Knuckles, he didn't even talk about the zones, but the game mechanics themselves.
he also misses at least half of the sonic games and NiGHTS. :/ with it being 40+ min long I at least wanted to see a few of the actually legit better sonic games instead of a clusterfk of vertigo that is the majority of the 3d games. and... doesn't even play "sonic boom" sonic boom sonic bewwwwwwwwwwm save the planet from disaster!
Your best video yet. Great concept, Great execution and it didn'f feel like 40 minutes.
The first Sonic Adventure game (For me) had the best soundtrack. Its a massive nostalgia rush for me when ever I hear it.
And now we have Mania
SONIC CD: FIRST TIME SONIC MUSIC GOT GOOD
NAH
Sonic 2 (US) had one of my favorite soundtracks growing up, right under FFVI (FFIII US) and Chrono Trigger.
CerealKiller Keep in mind, he didn't simply say that Sonic CD music was _better_ than the other games. He said it was the _first good music_ in the series.
That would imply that Sonic 1 & 2 had BAD music. Which is simply false.
And for the record,
Sonic 1 < Sonic CD (JP of course) < Sonic 2
in terms of music
CerealKiller If "Sonic CD was the first in the series to have good music," then "does not think the other games had good music." That's logic for ya.
CerealKiller Good > not good > bad. Objectively, the very definition of 'good' means...well, good. Not good is less good than good, and bad is worse than any of them. So his statement was, at minimum, that none of the Sonic games had good music before then. Whether 'not good' or 'bad' he doesn't say, but he definitely says they're 'not good.' He didn't like the music, but we're left to imagine whether that means he disliked it or just found it 'meh.'
Obviously, some of us disagree with his assessment.
Kackaphoney
Scrolled down to find that comment.
I wonder if he said that on purpose? Probably not.
Cacophony?
GammaWALLE I was mocking how he said it
I hit the comments right after he said it because I knew someone would have said something
This video is like a restaurant you always drive past, but decide to go in once
I love your commentary. I found so many good pull-quotes. Enthusiastic "like' and "subscribe"!
